i think from Aus tralian open 2004 to US open 2009... federer deserved to loose only 4 grand slam matches... french open 2004 kuerton, french open 2008 to nadal, french open 2007 nadal, Aus open 2008- djokovic (due to mono).. During this period of 24 slams federer should have had 20 slams instead he ended up with "ONLY" 14 slams the other 2 slams were of course Wimbledon 2003 and Aus 2010
@ForeverMan91 what you said. This game was a wonderful game. Roger and Marat were young. They held the game highest in the best state. I love this game. Even if Roger loses. However, Roger's achievement cannot be compared with Marat. you are always noisy.
No Offense to any australians but I remember the commentary of Patrick McEnroe and Dick Enberg being a whole lot better. Im Sorry, but I wish they were talking.
@Minkki82 What? You seem like a bit of a weirdo, why are you spitting the dummy? Sampras was playing good tennis but if you think he was in his prime then you're seriously deluded.
Safin in 2000 was not at his peak but he was still playing very well, I mean he won Wimbledon that year, Miami, did very well in Australia, finished the year ranked no 3 and was no 1 for some weeks in 2000. In terms of results in a season his 2000 was better than his 1996, 1998 (both finished no 1) and 1999. Only 1993-1995 and 1997 are better
@89Pleasek I can understand that you're 21 and obviously haven't taken the time a to see Sampras in action during the 90's. Things are not always black and white. Stats don't tell the whole story. Sampras was half a step slower than he was in 99 and there was a gulf in difference of movement from 1996 to 2000. He lost to very good opposition almost every time in 96 and it's not up for debate whether he was as good as this in 2000. As you can see, I like Safin but he hammered a lagging Sampras.
I havent watched Sampras i the mid 90's but I did around 2000 and he was pretty darn good.
Same goes for Federer, everybody with a little common sense knows that his last peak year was 2007 (or even 2006) but occasionally he can play close to or at his best, just look at 2009 Cincinnati, 2010 Masters Cup, 2011 Doha, 2010 Australian Open.
Arguing for the sake of Sampras' repuation (such a champion losing 3:0?) that he was "lagging" is disrespectful for Safin who played a brilliant match
@89Pleasek Sampras was obviously playing good tennis in 2000, nobody will dispute that but he was far from his 'very peak'. Sampras was still a good match player, CLUTCH. Federer on the other hand is far from that. He's a shadow of his former self. Most would say Federer's peak was in either 2005 or 2006. You seem to think just because a player wins a tournament or such, that he's at or close to his best. Not the case. Federer was nowhere near his best in any of those tournaments.
Let's stick with Sampras still playing great (but I wouldn't say it's FAR from his best) in 2000 and Safin's win over him was legitimate, especially after he beat him just a month prior in Toronto. I mean nobody would argue that Federer at the 2009 US Open was at his best but he was (and still is) a great player.
I maintain what I said about Federer. The difference between now and then is that the Swiss could produce the goods on a consistant basis, now he plays something around 2-3 great tournaments (agree with you that it's still not prime Federer) in a span of a year.
Look at Agassi, he played great as a teenager, in his mid 20's in his late 20's and even in his 30's. What's his prime then? I'd like to remind you that he won 5 out of his 8 Slams after 1999.
@89Pleasek Don't patronize me. From what you've said, your tennis knowledge is very limited and your reliance on stats is strong. If you think Federer was playing at his best at the AO10, you obviously didn't see him during his prime. A couple of very good matches doesn't equate to a whole tournament.
How can you compare Agassi to Federer? Sometimes you just cannot compare. Agassi never lost his ability or confidence in his strokes. What let him down was his chronic back problem.
@89Pleasek Federer is a confidence driven player, in the past, his mentality was machine like and he would appear completely unbreakable. People talk of his backhand breaking down more often these days and the way he is unable to penetrate opponents with a backhand drive, which is true but when a players favourite shot fails them, then they are in trouble. Federer's forehand breaks down 10x more often now than in the past, leaking errors. And it's not disrespectful to Safin, it's just fact.
@MaratSafinVideos maybe sampras' s&v isn't as sharp as its used to in 2000. Precision is important in his strategy. But when he loses, he always lost to passing shots and can't change his game. He is same like nadal, both one dimensional with a strongest weapon. Federer isn't the best of any thing, but is jack of all trades. Not sure if safin would have won a prime sampras, but i recalled more players are blocking his serve which had not changed much.
Nalbandian only beat Fed once during his prime years...which was the Master's Cup '05 final and he won it in a 5th set tiebreak.
Fed played well, but at the same time he hadn't played a tournament in two months after an injury had forced him to pull out of Madrid and Paris. I personally would not consider that Fed at his best even though it was a good match.
yeah but on clay, which never was federers best surface. hardcourt on the other hand like at the oz open was something different. i agree with bobomber
one of my favorite matches, I got to watch this live on TV, I was lucky to get off work early to watch. I was cheering for Safin all the way and I loved the on court interview afterwards. Unfortunately Safin has been on a downward spiral again I hope he does not retire for seeing this match again he can certainly play against the best and win.
This was a much higher quality match than that, Federer was nowhere near his best, here he is prime. Two attacking players absolutely racking the ball here, a contrast to this years Wimbledon final.
I remember this match so well, my fav player safin, his birthday, against the world number one, just amazing, the two most talented players of the world did the match of the century!!!
i remember this semifinal so well! Two my favourite tennis players! I couldn't tear myself away this match! It was so thrilling, so exciting, so great!!! Thank you for retrospecting)))))))))))
Roger Federer is an amazing player, however I don't think he reacts to defeat as well as he should. If you watched the match against Djokovic, when he lost he didn't even look at Novak as he shook his hand. He's done that before with Canas, or people that he doesn't feel he should lose to.
May be because he felt that he didn't play his best tennis in those mentioned matches..Federer barely said a word 2 Novak on shaking hands..because really his reactions on court were unbearable ..and even in his press conference,he was arrogant after his 2nd win on Roger contrary to Rafa who won 8 times without any arrogant attitude ..Novak is a good player but should be class ..I think none can stand such a pressure in matches alike ..and Don't 4get that every champ feels ashamed after loss!
God... even after falling to his knees, Federer was getting up to play on! Such a fighter! As for Safin... well, I can only say this: WHY THE HELL DON'T YOU PLAY LIKE THIS ANYMORE?!?
Ummm...maybe because he has been plagued with injury? He was warned before Wimbledon 2005 that his ligaments and tendon could snap at anytime, he played the tournament and it finally went in Cincinatti against Ginepri.
Well he played lights out tennis in the second and third, then it came to show that lack of matches, lack of big time matches like this have taken its effect, you have to ask the question, does he remember how he won all those big matches years ago, does he still believe...
One of the most amazing games I've ever seen. Marat deserve it though. Australian open has always had an underdog, at least get into the finales past couple of years. It's amazing.
He was not an underdog, he is a former world number 1 and then he was ranked top 5. He just came off winning Madrid and Paris masters late the year before. He also made the final in 2002 and 2004, NOT an underdog.
Clearly Federer lost because he went to white. How many shirts did he go through? At least 10 and probably 8 rackets. If there is a better match in the past 5 years someone please post it.
Thanks a lot breakingthehabitt.....you're the best. Now i have the full collection...Djokovic vs Federer in Dubai is also an incredible match which no one has bothered to post in youtube.wonder if someone has that...atleast the full match highlights....
The reason why Federer is god of tennis is because Safin is the creator.
