If anyone is interested, you should look into the Destreza System of Spanish fencing. The Spanish rapier and dagger fighters had a reputation of being the best in Europe. There are records of a few Destreza masters whose political careers took them to the Philippines. The only English print that covers the system is Gerard Thibault's "Academy of the Sword". It is interesting to see the similarities as well as differences.
Saying 300 years of Spainish rule may or may not have any influence on FMA's Espada Y Daga - a spanish term does not diminish it's true Filipino flavor. In fact I am proud to see how many Filipinos have the ability to embrace things, add their own influence and make it their own. An if you can't see the garlic and soy sauce then go to your local sari sari store and buy a sense of humor.- haha see- funny! Dont take any of this as truth or seriously , we certainly dont.
@kalisong1 Yes, we cannot disregard the 300 years of Spanish oppresion, and how that influenced these arts. You are correct. And I too am proud to see how many Europeans and Americans have the ability to embrace things, add their own influence, and make it their own. Kali however refers specifically to the warrior arts prior to any Spanish invaders. This distinction is no laughing matter. Thank you for the video however.
@fiyahlord why can't it be a laughing matter? smile , have fun. Filipinos are very happy and light hearted people. Fight if need be we certainly can but we prefer to extend out hand out in friendship over the hand of war.
@kalisong1 Peace! Thank you for taking the time to clarify. I embrace your hand in friendship and offer mine as well. Sometimes I have seen negative information pass in the form of a "joke" and so I was just making sure this was not the case.
Kali Arnis and eskrima has so much debate of what is or isn't none of which can be proven or not proven. it only serves to separate us as fellow practitioners so I leave the History lesson to those who only want to know but we want to be able to do and do so in a positive light and that includes laughter in a very serious art form. Peace and i hope you can enjoy the vids and laugh with us like we enjoy laughing at ourselves.
I would encourage you, my brother, to read the works of Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje concerning the authentic, indigenous form of Kali. He goes through great lengths to end much of this debate. I can share more of this with you or your subscribers if you need. I enjoy this conversation and we need more of it. We are indeed brothers who share a love for this art, and I would never want us divided. Thank you.
@fiyahlord I guess you do not know who kalisong1 is, have you followed his videos, not just this one? GT Gaje is one of his teachers! He is by far one of the best PTK instructors we have seen bar none!
@kracka117 To Mandala and other fellow PTK practitioners, I meant no disrespect by this dialogue, or by even mentioning GT Gaje. And in no way was I ever discrediting kalisong1 ability and skill as an instructor. I do not want this conversation, or the one sentence I was challenging, to distract from the beauty of this video, the skill and science from this video, and the hardwork, dedication, and importance of the instructor who posted it. Thank you.
@fiyahlord no offense taken at all GT Gaje,as well as Ama Guro Jun De Leon, Tito Jun Saludo , Tom Bision, Omar Hakin, Bill Mcgrath all my teachers have their ideas and principles unique unto them .
The intro to this video is misleading and false. You suggest that Kali espada y daga technique has some European influence when you say "Mix 1 part European sword and dagger." Perhaps arnis or escrima can claim some European influence, however what sets Kali apart is that it represents the indegenous form of the art, prior to the arrival of Europeans. Kali is espada y daga is uninfluenced by Europeans.
@fiyahlord I saw very little garlic and soy sauce, this recipe is greatly flawed!
Honestly though, you may have a point. I'm not sure what was meant by that bit either. Perhaps instead of a straight or "pure" interpretation of Kali, Kalisong1's drill is somehow influenced by European espada y daga. Just a guess.
