this is not called changing of the guards...that's the parade u see from 9-10 every day at parliament hill in the summer....this is called the relief of the sentries.
We in America have the Old Guard gaurding the tomb of the unknown 24/7. Yes even 365 days a year. It's the most disciplined unit in the world! Their second job is the protection of our capital Washington DC.
unfortunatley The unit is training throughout the year, and many members have civilian jobs during that time as well since this is reserve units who do this every summer.
Very nice video. someone here said this was just during the summer between 9 and 5? Why don't they do this year round like the Tomb of the unknown in Washington DC? I would think a place of honor (or for canadians "honour") like this would deserve such a guard.
They only started posting sentries at the war memorial this summer as it was vandalized in 06. Traditionally the job of a guard regiment is to protect to Monarch or in Canada the Monarchs representative - the Governor General. So having guards in such a place goes a little against the grain, but I think there was plans to have a year round guard.
how are they "guarding it" are they allowed to use force is necessary, what if, say someone went up to them and punched them in the arm or something, or knocked off their hats, etc... i know tourists would go up to them and like stand right next shoulder to them and they won't move, but i bet they'll do somethign if they're threatened.
thats why we have the people who are dressed in their generic dress uniform with the forage caps on. They make sure that tourists and the like don' t do what you just decribed. Guards for the guards kind of deal.
Ceremonial Guard completed its duties on 27 Aug 07, that's probably why you didn't see them there. Also, they are guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and to a lesser extent the National War Memorial.
oh and not to keep harping on things but my friend informed me that you got the title of the video wrong as well. its the relief of the sentries. you see these soldiers are members of the sentries that normally protect Rideau Hall. The changing of the guards is on parliament hill where two separate regiments replace each other as the guards of the parliament. I think thats about it for me.
they are guarding the war memorial, isnt that obvious from the massive stone monument behind them. Its sad that they have to hey when ppl decide to piss on the memorial things must be done!
