Fairtrade is fine and better for workers than normal ranges, but it remains a small market - it only covers a certain goods in shops and is not being expanded very quickly. The costs of it also mean it isn't as competitive when competing with good made by exploited workers. Goods to the UK will continue to be made in terrible conditions until regulation is brought in that forces companies to treat their workers fairly. Without this, most companies will go for the highest profits.

The problem with the garment industry is that abuse of workers is so widespread that all high street retailers and supermarkets are guilty and workers rely on the trade they provide. So you can't just avoid certain shops. Equally we don't want to boycott certain clothing brands because this could lose work for people who desperately need it. So we're calling on the UK govt to bring in regulation that will guarantee decent standards for all overseas workers supplying the UK.
