Thankfully Killing Joke don't really fit into a single pigeon hole musically, be it post-punk, metal, industrial or whatever. This is one of the things that I've always found refreshing about them. Their just a good fucking band and one of the most important ones of the last 30 years or so (and Jaz hates fucking Bono too, nice one fella).
Metal shmetal, Killing Joke were spawned by the punk scene, but created their own tribal, high energy, intelligent rock. They are their own genre in my opinion, just enjoy em.

@sicomatt123 : It does not mean KJ are metal because they inspired certain metalbands.

For instance take their debut album (1980) is that metal? No.It is so much more than just one stream or sound, that seems to be what KJ is all about : not to be pigeonholed.
I bet Jaz felt stupid about telling everyone the world was going to end and moving to Iceland before " anarchy " took over . Stick to singing and quit ranting on and on , jibberish .
I think he's really honest and really quite balanced in his outlook...he's certainly nobody's fool. Listen to what the guy's saying. It rings of a hell of a lot of truth. Do what thou wilt and harm none.
Eco-politics; Worldwide socio-religious warfare; pollution; history; ethics; politics and so on and so on...
You'd have to be a dimwit not to see the polarity as he struggles to digest the global infrastructure's shake at their foundations. Yeah I hold him in high regard indeed.
Yes, festivals ARE utter corporate crap these days. Like emptying a bin in shopping centre & paying £200 to sit in it with a faulty i-pod on your head, surrounded by brain-dead, rat-race fucking twats.
Surely anyone accusing Jaz/Killing Joke of cashing in would point at them allowing their songs to be used in video games. I know "The death and resurrection show" was used on one and I believe "Turn to red" was also used for is it Grand auto theft? I would genuinely like to hear Jaz explain why he agreed to this. If he is doing it because he wants to do something positive with the money, like setting up an eco village, then fair enough. It's just that like Jaz, I have a very suspicious nature!
@Fancyjoke Are you implying that you have doubts as to the existence of the eco village Mr Coleman claims to have set up?! Jaz really is one difficult man to pin down. Almost everything about him seems a contradiction, from his music to his political beliefs. I sometimes wonder if he isn't just taking us all for a bunch of mugs and pissing himself laughing at the killing joke he's been playing on us all!
@MisAnnThorpe I can't imagine him saying "Yeah that's cool, as long as we get money out of it!" I'd say he said for them to go ahead and use the track so that teens nowadays who weren't familiar with Killing Joke's music would hear them and enjoy them too. I can't imagine money was even a deciding factor for him at all.
Allowing the songs to be used in mediums such as games, extends who will hear Killing Joke. Killing Joke (like alot of non-mainstream bands) wouldn't get alot of airplay on the radio or the television. Someone hears their songs in a game might go out and look into the band.
@MisAnnThorpe I think older music, classic music, in videogames is a good thing because it educates the younger generation and they absorb the music whilst enjoying themselves, thus creating the 'feel-good' factor in their minds.
@Studas2006 In all honesty it doesn't work...everyone has their own taste in music and as a lifelong gamer of the best part of thirty years I can happily state that if I don't like the music in a game I go into the options, turn it off and put my own on via other means, even in games with mixed soundtrack I will skip the stuff I simply dont like and listen to the songs I do enjoy.
That's exactly the question I've been asking myself; Where did a bankrupt Nazi Germany find the resources to start a world war? Funny, but I don't ever remember seeing a single programme on the TV that attempted to answer that question. In fact, I don't even recall the question being asked! I think it might make for a very interesting and enlightening film but no, what we really need is another film about the holocaust!
I love Jaz's honesty. He's not scared to speak out. People often ask me why I've never voted for any political party, and listening to Jaz speaking says it all.
Straight up, there are too many humans. The minute you really want to help, you'll close your legs or stick your knob in your undies and keep it there. Stop having fucking babies!
@Fancyjoke On a level that might be true, but people take up space and resources, even the most eco-friendly of us cause wear and tear on the human-friendly ecosystem. I think I remember hearing that a UN analysis that for ecological stability the human population worldwide would need to decrease by 3 million.
@Fancyjoke Actually, limiting population growth will help hugely. the human population of the planet grows yearly because we deny natural selection, the ill and in-firmed dont die, those babies born premature or deformed, dont die and people are living longer and longer. It won't solve it all but it would help. the "benefits society" has seen unemployed youngsters having two or three babies just so they can reap the tax paid benefits.
very interesting quote from Jaz, especially in the light of the credit crunch, in which tax payers have been effectively enslaved to pay off the banks wrecklessness....which is another attempt to enslave others.
"I don't believe in our system of Democracy. Its a two horse race, and both horses are run by the same stable owner" - that's the way i've always felt about politics, its gonna be the same shit no matter who gets voted in. Jaz puts it brilliantly.
"I don't believe in our system of Democracy. Its a two horse race, and both horses are run by the same stable owner"
No kidding. Civilisation is about having a stable ruling regime, not revolution between extremes every 4 years.

He's SO wise. He really understands the world in SUCH a profound way. I suppose spending your entire adult life without ever doing a day's work outside of travelling, doing the soundcheck, drinking the rider and regurgitating stats you read in magazines has lead Jaz to such a heightened state of awareness. Like Bono.
LIKE BONO.... listen to this interview again and he explains what the people like BONO are like... they are sociopaths that do things to promote THEMSELVES... bono would also fall into that unhappy billionaire category that Jaz talks about as being so miserable because they will never have everything they crave...
I am both a long time killing joke and U2 fan, and I think U2 just didn't handle becoming famous so fast very well. They were kids and were launched into super stardom and allowed the media to control them more than they wanted and then it just kept snowballing. But I like Bono (and Jazz). I can understand different viewpoints, I can also see Jazz's side of it, but it doesn't make me hate other people.
Jaz is a real character. He has his own opinions as you see here and he doesn't shy from putting his point across. He doesn't fit into the modern world and that, to me, is inspirational.
The city of New York does not pump shit into the fuckin ocean. Has he never heard of wastewater treatment facilities? The US has some of the toughest water purity laws in the world. He needs to do his homework. Oddly he claims to posses an I.Q. of 190. He should look at his own country before he spouts bullshit.
Not sure he means every year since '79. I believe what he means is that they've been working on albums since '79. The 7 year gap, they all still had projects, while still writing material for the next album.
On to something more important: I do believe that we all need to work on being more sustainable. And it's so very possible for celebrities especially to do this. Even for Christmas and special holidays, give to charity instead of buying a 20 dollar dvd. You can buy a family a goat.
'So what's your reason for believing they're cashing in?'
What sells better: Killing Joke on new album tour or original lineup playing selected classic albums in their entirity?
If you read my comment, you'll see that I'm just as excited about the gigs as the next Gatherer. But when he dismisses reunions in a manner displayed in this interview, it does leave a bit of a sour taste. Remember Gems of Power?
i agree with pretty much everything jaz said in this interview, but to be honest thats the one thing i dont. i dont think any bands reform just to make money apart from manufactured pop bands. i think bands like the rolling stones/the who/the eagles (even though i dont like any of them) reform cos they do genuinely want to perform together again.
I think it's more to do with them getting older and realising they won't be able to do this for much longer. Yes, being able to play together again after so many years must be a fantastic buzz but I'm sure the paycheck doesn't hurt either.
@opensourcethong Don't b so naive! Yes, there no doubt are exceptions 2 the rule, like Roger Daltrey perhaps, who craves the adulation of an audience but do u really think Keith Richards would rather b sharing a stage with Jagger, playing "Brown sugar" again, than at home listening to his favourite blues & classical records? Charlie Watts has spoken quite openly about what a chore it is for him, playing drums in a rock band. These people choose a certain lifestyle & to maintain that costs money.
@COwens i agree with Fancyjoke. remember this was back in 05 and Ferguson didn't come back till 08. and Youth has been back with them since 93 and he was of the main to bring them back in 02. he and Raven both contributed on their 03 album and Youth decided to let Raven do all of Hosannas, which was selfless of him. it is unfortunate that Raven died in 07 and Youth and Ferguson came back the next year in his honor.
Hehehehe, only Jaz could get away with calling Bob Geldof a sociopath! A lot of people decry him as a nutter and don't like what he says. However, I think he speaks an uncomfortable truth that we could all benefit from listening to, taking heed and making the very necessary changes. However, it might make your comfortable little life somewhat less so.
i completely agree, if you actually open your eyes it's obvious that the people with all the power, are the people with all the money (and with all the weapons). the only thing is it's always been that way, and the chances of you finding the real people responsible and bringing them to justice are virtually zero. and even if you did, some other tyrant would just take the power back, it's human nature. i dont wanna sound like the prophet of doom, but i think nothing will ever change
Yep, those who appear to hold the reins of power are all too often simply the puppets for far greater, unseen forces, usually with unethical, immoral or simply evil motivations. I don't think you are being the prophet of doom, just realistic regarding the inherently greedy and frequently psychopathic nature of those who covet power, prestige and dosh.
As the old saying goes: "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". Anyone who believes otherwise is idealistically naïve .
imagine jazz and jello hanging out, that would be interesting and funny and serious and interesting and funny.

i completely agree, if you actually open your eyes it's obvious that the people with all the power, are the people with all the money (and with all the weapons). the only thing is it's always been that way, and the chances of you finding the real people responsible and bringing them to justice are virtually zero. and even if you did, some other tyrant would just take the power back, it's human nature. i dont wanna sound like the prophet of doom, but i think nothing will ever change
