  • I have a 12-string classical guitar that I use for a slide and a guitar teacher who plays fab despite his wrist injuries that he sustained years ago. When I get the chance, I will ask him to teach me some more slide, so I can be as good as Jerry :)

  • Really nice! Thank you

  • Just wonderful !!

  • Great stuff again from these masters. Love to see them live though, I've seen

Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham two or three times, teriffic!

  • Let's be honest, this is the boll*cks.

  • Tremendous energy and power and feeling!!! I learned flatpick guitar from Russ Barenberg in 1983 thru Homespun Tapes. I have since learned dobro; and for the last 6 months I have been learning fiddling and mandolining (?) [aka playing the mandolin]. Playing this music is such a blast!!! The Zen of great music!!! I am again inspired---time to go play some more music myself! Thanks for posting!!! Red

  • The difference between a violin and a fiddle? A violin has never had a beer spilled on it.

  • @txmacartist In that vein, I like Mark O'Connor's answer to the difference between a violinist and a fiddle player: I know of a lot of ex-violinists; I don't know any ex-fiddle-players.

  • I could listen to that again... think I will.

    Great tune!

  • Will the 6 idiots who gave a thumbs down dare to reveal their identities? I

  • as close as we get..folks

  • I think a fiddle and a violin are the same instrument, its just that if you play trad Irish its usually called a fiddle whereas if you play classical, its called a violin

  • @sisteraba actually a 'fiddle' has a different bridge. The bridge on a violin for classical playing typically has a higher arch for more precise playing, and the bridge for folk or traditional playing typically is a 'fiddle bridge' that is flatter. It's not a huge difference but other than how it's played that's the only real way for there to be a difference. I play fiddle style but my new violin has the classical arched bridge, I have to get a fiddlin bridge put on it.

  • @sisteraba You'd be right to think that, Unbelievable the amount of nonsense spoken about the difference between a violin and a fiddle as they're the same thing. Violin is the proper name, fiddle the informal or nick name (in English) of the instrument, in the same way for example as the Button Accordion is nearly always referred to as the Box here in Ireland.

  • I think a fiddle and a violin are the same instrument, its just that if you play trad Irish its usually called a fiddle whereas if you play classical, its called a violin

  • They are all legends........

  • ça c'est un truc québecois non?

  • the violin puts you to sleep while the fiddle makes you wanna get up and dance !

  • wow, this is a real high quality video of some real talent......

  • Try taking a listen to Big Scioty from Transatlantic Sessions !

    Shit hot, me boys!

  • Greetings from America: Yeeeeeehhhhhhaaaaa!!

  • love it, thanks

  • jerry douglas's solo rocks

  • @crawfordviolin Douglas' solo does, indeed, rock but not above anyone else's. An issue for me is that there's no mention of the string bass player. Bassists aren't furniture, they're musicians, and this one seems very competent.

  • @clipperflier A fantiastic bassist actuallly, I hear he commands great respect in musical circles. damned if I can remember his name though - he didn't play the live shows. shame - a friend of mine who's a bassist thinks he's fantastic.

  • Wow. So good.

  • of course they are some of the greatest musicians ever. But I must agree, the version here is a little too 'notey' for my ears. I'm sure it is extremely difficult to play and can admire him learning the version , but my ears prefer the bluegrass version of the tune that has less notes and more slides and slurs.

But I'm more partial to bluegrass than Irish music. So to each their own. Like art, everyone has an opinion don't they??lol

  • I've always heard it is an Ottawa Valley tune.

  • woo PEI

  • YES!!! St Anne's Rel IS from PEI

  • WOW !!! WATCH the FINGERS FLY!!!

  • thanks for this reel, good job

  • It's the tune everyone agrees on....

  • Just beautiful!!!

  • magical... i thought Aly was playing it pretty straight at first, then when jerry improvised, Aly showed us a thing or two.... just love this

  • Saw this on one of the BBC channels last week! Couldn't believe a C&W luminary like Jerry was in a crofters cottage in Scotland! Great Music

  • Just Absolutely Wonderful performance by all 100%

Ron! I have sent you a video response of me LOL.

  • just beautifull

  • nice fidlle playaing

  • Was this recorded for an album? Can I get this or a similar version on mp3? Thanks.

  • This was recorded for Transatlantic Sessions 3 (2007)- (2) dvds for PAL tv playback. Possibly on cd also.

Sessions 1 & 4 are also available. Same for PAL tv, and possible cds. Check w/MusicScotland.

PAL dvds can be converted to play on USofA tv (NTSC) with software (ConvertXtoDVD). Software can also rip & encode cds to mp3.

You'll find lots more of various Sessions on YT.

Some of the best I've ever heard: Julie Fowlis, Cara Dillon, Emily Smith, Bruce Molsky, and so many more- great introduction.

  • ...a violin has a case and you don't spill beer on it...

  • Long live strings!

  • This sooo flippin' good! These guy's are the man! I've just started learning this song on guitar except in a less complicated version. It's such a lovely song.

  • Sorry for being a noob but what's the difference between a violin and a fiddle? Is it just in the way they're played? Great song anyways.

  • Depends upon whether you're buying or selling :)

  • I always heard the difference is about $25,000 :)

  • The secret o the difference

    Lies only in the name,

For a violin and a fiddle

    Are exactly one and same.

Ye can dissect poke and prod,

    Or analyse and display them.

But the only difference yell ever find

Is in the minds o fowk that play them.

  • @caterthun no silly, you put strings on a violin, but you put strangs on a fiddle.

  • @caterthun Yeah, and a violin has strings, while a fiddle has Strangs! Ask anyone mate! Lol!

  • @caterthun Violins burn longer.

  • @caterthun I always heard the difference between a violin and a fiddle is about $10,000 :)

  • @caterthun and the bridge of a fiddle is typically less curved........ ha just kidding....... but seriously

  • yes, st Annes reel is special and i dont

think it should be just stuck in the middle

of a pile of Irish reels, much as i love Irish

    reels.

The boys make a great job of it here.

  • Love this! Cannae beat a bit ae Transatlantic Sessions!

  • This song rox! I like that fiddle!

  • I really love the ending. Final chord... silence... ....*whohoo!*...

  • Agree =D

  • Amazing!

  • good old french canadian tunes

  • I must have that Dobro!!! Sounds sooooo good! Lemme just pull like $6000 outta my ass...

  • HAHA try $7500 my friend!!!! It's a Jerry Douglas limted edt Beard, only 50 made and you can go pick it up at Beard guitars for $7500

  • amazing! great stuff. these people are experts. love acoustic music. thanx for uploading.

  • Flux killed that!!

  • WOW! Russ is a real talented, classic picker. Clean and effortless!!

  • Best Rendition (fiddler) on the net. Great work, Aly Bain !!!

  • Oh my shoot!

  • Hot Damn!

  • Just great. Thanks for the upload!

  • What an amazing song. man, i wish i played fiddle as good as this guy.

  • Who doesn't??

Aly Bain is the best, funniest and srunkest fiddler the world has ever seen!

Just saw him live for the billionth time with Phil Cunningham :D Everyone shoud at one point in their lives!

  • as good as aly and russ are, notice that jerry is the one who devises the most interesting variations...after hearing the piece for forty years, i really treasure such creative approaches. that said, aly plays with great spirit and drive, and russ is one of the best around as well.

  • papa - as someone who only discovered Jerry late in life- (5-6 years ago) - I think he is one of the most singular and unique talents to have ever appeared. He's up there with Flatt and Scruggs and the other great, truly inovative musicians who'll crowd heaven.

It is no insult to be mentioned alongside a player like Jerry - to be able to play with him is all the credibility anyone would need. Listen to Russ play 'The Drummers of England' and see how he doesn't pale by any comparison!

  • These videos have made me realise how much I enjoy watching (ie not just listening to) people play great music. This is what live music should be like, as if you're sitting in amongst them being able to see every finger movement, it's magical.

    I've just got to become a world-class instrumentalist first...hmm..

    p.s. "whopee!" - Class.

  • Spot on Tigerboy - couldn't put it better.

  • Jerry Douglas' dobro gets to crying, and then, well, I get to crying, too. It's happened too many times to count.

  • Aye ye there! :-) There's a man who can play the fiddle. The best in the world he is, that man, that Aly Bain. Aye! :-D

  • a skylark only appears like that.....

  • These guys are so gifted. Just makes you happy to remember you are alive.

  • Great way to put it! I couldn't agree more.

  • Absolutely wonderful!

  • Don't forget Russ Barenberg. He's a legend also!

  • absolutely, a true legend

  • Look at those fingers go!! now that's some skill there.

  • I love Aly Bain's playing!

  • ...makes me want to buy a new hat.

  • you can tell Todd Parks, the bassist, is just happy to be in a room with such musicianship. i know i would be.

  • You are spot on there!! He has that look that is saying wow this is just awesome!!!

  • jerry douglas and aly bain are both total legends - this dobro solo is one of the best musical moments of my entire life. i could cry.

  • I love the way Aly gets after it at 2:53. Great musicianship all around.

  • Great to hear folk-trad guitar played properly and not as a percussive instrument.

  • Yeah as a guitarist it is nice to hear another one who's bothered to learn the tunes!

  • ...meglio di un usignolo...great!

  • superb:-))

    ta for posting the vid.

    ellie

  • Esos videos con esos músicos me apasionan!!!

    Gracias por postar.

    Cariños

  • Any time Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas are in the same room together, it is bound to be magic.

  • thnx tomtscotland for posting this. so soulfull

  • It's a Canadian fiddle tune

  • I've heard that tune before somewhere but I can't remember when.

Was it on some other friendly shore, did I hear it on the wind?

Was it written in the stars above? I think I heard it from someone I love,

But I've never heard it sound so sweet since then.

  • defintely the best rendition ive heard of this tune :-)

  • Wow, kirsty, I'm glad you mentioned that. I thought it was aimed at me...

I'm quoting lyrics from a song based on this tune, called "The Ballad of St Anne's Reel".

  • noooooo I don´t know what i did but it looked like i´d responded to myself :-(

I gave yours the thumbs up :-)

  • Thanks.

  • Am I right in saying that St.Anne's Reel is a Cape Briton tune?

  • I've heard this one time played by pure polish folk musicians. Different accents and much slower but tune were the same. Isn't it strange?

  • I've always understood it to be from Prince Edward Island ... which is just across the way. I may be wrong on this though. It is definitely played widely throughout Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia though

  • I think this is one of those tunes were the origin is unclear!

Of course these types of tunes are derivative - with Scottish and Irish tunes being the main influence.

  • In the song 'The Ballad of St Annes Reel' it mentions Prince Edward Island...

  • this was excellent, but once I heard that "Ballad of st catherines reel." I loved it. do you know who did it? I heard it on the radio.

  • @derfeus There is another traditional Celtic song by the name of "Ballad of St. Anne's Reel." This song is about the origins of the reel and is in fact set on Prince Edward Island.

  • Hey dude lets hear you do it better. The guy has his own line of dobros come'n out with Beard Guitars. When you get your own line guitars, then you can talk "Pro"

  • Ha. Ever ken o variations? At's what makes fiddle music alive instead o the daid Cohaltas stuffs. An Aly's a wicked player. A'd lak t'hear ye dae it better.

  • Why don't you fuck right off? What are you, the fucking god of fiddle music?

  • amazing. how are you able to form words with your sphincter like that?

  • are you nuts? youve just made a real tit of yourself here. plonker.

  • this comment was for coconutconnectionban

  • coconutconnection: If you're gonna criticise people for being un-pro then maybe learn to spell first.

  • Really wonderful to hear Aly Bain play with such great musicians. Thank you for playing and posting this here.

  • I love the "whoopee!" at the end.

  • Thanks Tomt, fantastic stuff!

  • Ahh St Anne's reel one of the first tunes I learned on my Mandolin (Not as good as this lot, Yet)

    thanks for posting it.
