I have a 12-string classical guitar that I use for a slide and a guitar teacher who plays fab despite his wrist injuries that he sustained years ago. When I get the chance, I will ask him to teach me some more slide, so I can be as good as Jerry :)
Tremendous energy and power and feeling!!! I learned flatpick guitar from Russ Barenberg in 1983 thru Homespun Tapes. I have since learned dobro; and for the last 6 months I have been learning fiddling and mandolining (?) [aka playing the mandolin]. Playing this music is such a blast!!! The Zen of great music!!! I am again inspired---time to go play some more music myself! Thanks for posting!!! Red
@txmacartist In that vein, I like Mark O'Connor's answer to the difference between a violinist and a fiddle player: I know of a lot of ex-violinists; I don't know any ex-fiddle-players.
I think a fiddle and a violin are the same instrument, its just that if you play trad Irish its usually called a fiddle whereas if you play classical, its called a violin
@sisteraba actually a 'fiddle' has a different bridge. The bridge on a violin for classical playing typically has a higher arch for more precise playing, and the bridge for folk or traditional playing typically is a 'fiddle bridge' that is flatter. It's not a huge difference but other than how it's played that's the only real way for there to be a difference. I play fiddle style but my new violin has the classical arched bridge, I have to get a fiddlin bridge put on it.
@sisteraba You'd be right to think that, Unbelievable the amount of nonsense spoken about the difference between a violin and a fiddle as they're the same thing. Violin is the proper name, fiddle the informal or nick name (in English) of the instrument, in the same way for example as the Button Accordion is nearly always referred to as the Box here in Ireland.
I think a fiddle and a violin are the same instrument, its just that if you play trad Irish its usually called a fiddle whereas if you play classical, its called a violin
@crawfordviolin Douglas' solo does, indeed, rock but not above anyone else's. An issue for me is that there's no mention of the string bass player. Bassists aren't furniture, they're musicians, and this one seems very competent.
@clipperflier A fantiastic bassist actuallly, I hear he commands great respect in musical circles. damned if I can remember his name though - he didn't play the live shows. shame - a friend of mine who's a bassist thinks he's fantastic.
of course they are some of the greatest musicians ever. But I must agree, the version here is a little too 'notey' for my ears. I'm sure it is extremely difficult to play and can admire him learning the version , but my ears prefer the bluegrass version of the tune that has less notes and more slides and slurs.
But I'm more partial to bluegrass than Irish music. So to each their own. Like art, everyone has an opinion don't they??lol
This sooo flippin' good! These guy's are the man! I've just started learning this song on guitar except in a less complicated version. It's such a lovely song.
as good as aly and russ are, notice that jerry is the one who devises the most interesting variations...after hearing the piece for forty years, i really treasure such creative approaches. that said, aly plays with great spirit and drive, and russ is one of the best around as well.
papa - as someone who only discovered Jerry late in life- (5-6 years ago) - I think he is one of the most singular and unique talents to have ever appeared. He's up there with Flatt and Scruggs and the other great, truly inovative musicians who'll crowd heaven.
It is no insult to be mentioned alongside a player like Jerry - to be able to play with him is all the credibility anyone would need. Listen to Russ play 'The Drummers of England' and see how he doesn't pale by any comparison!
These videos have made me realise how much I enjoy watching (ie not just listening to) people play great music. This is what live music should be like, as if you're sitting in amongst them being able to see every finger movement, it's magical.
I've just got to become a world-class instrumentalist first...hmm..
I've always understood it to be from Prince Edward Island ... which is just across the way. I may be wrong on this though. It is definitely played widely throughout Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia though

sab15yt 2 years ago
This was recorded for Transatlantic Sessions 3 (2007)- (2) dvds for PAL tv playback. Possibly on cd also.
Sessions 1 & 4 are also available. Same for PAL tv, and possible cds. Check w/MusicScotland.
PAL dvds can be converted to play on USofA tv (NTSC) with software (ConvertXtoDVD). Software can also rip & encode cds to mp3.
You'll find lots more of various Sessions on YT.
Some of the best I've ever heard: Julie Fowlis, Cara Dillon, Emily Smith, Bruce Molsky, and so many more- great introduction.

The secret o the difference
Lies only in the name,
For a violin and a fiddle
Are exactly one and same.
Ye can dissect poke and prod,
Or analyse and display them.
But the only difference yell ever find
Is in the minds o fowk that play them.

But I've never heard it sound so sweet since then.

Of course these types of tunes are derivative - with Scottish and Irish tunes being the main influence.
