  • I'm sure the line is:

    Of bold Leopold's last stand.

  • me dad used to sing this after a few newcastle browns

  • This one brought a smile to me and fond memories of an old shipmate of mine who used to sing this song at the top of his voice while marching up and down usually in front of gathered local crowds when we went ashore. This was in the early 70s in the Persian Gulf; his name was Mick Roach from Dublin, just a lovely guy, full of fun and excellent entertainment. I lost touch with him and often wonder if he is still living. Thanks for reviving old memories. Isnt You Tube just great?

  • @oldbetterwareman Totally agree with you - Youtube's fabulous for enterrtainment, interest, knowledge, meeting friends etc. I haven't heard this song for over 40 years, and just typed in some of the lyrics and found it. Thanks for sharing your story about your shipmate.

  • my favourite song of his thank god his voice lives on. how lucky i was to have met the man himself

  • Nice one, the deep, thanks for the comment.

  • Yes what did he expect, clobber to the knees.

  • Nice and sandy.

  • Thanks for the comment, lyn.

  • a favourite of my mother's I seem to know all the words of Joe Lockes songs ha

  • Even the tee-totallers here tried to imitate him as well.

  • I saw Josef as a teenager in Oldham and most of the pub singers tried to imitate him... :)

  • Thanks for the comment WeLoveit.

  • What a Voice !

  • Thank you Manfrommars.

  • This is a wonderful song sung by a wonderful singer. It brings back memories of my childhood.

  • hiyadroogs I did not remove your comment, you are entitled to your opinion.

  • Fair play to you hiyadroogs.

  • Hiyadroogs, you can split hairs in the most authoritative manner, still, you have to say it was well received.

  • Too true Bing.

  • josef was the pride of blackpool england saw him there often

  • Jedbrad I agree your lyrics are what I always heard.

  • Some confusion over the lyrics:

I understand the line to be:

I'll do or die, or know the reason why when told,

Of bold Leopolds's last stand for the for the fatherland.

Leopold being the waiter Leopold Brandmeyer at the White Horse Inn.

  • ramquen this recording would date from around the late 1950s, there is plenty of his recordings available on remastered CDs.

  • I would love to hear some more of his recordings from this period.I've always liked his singing but this was an absolute eye-opener-as sharp as a razor. Can anyone say what age he was when he recorded this?.I feel this man was only underrated by snobs,he was a superb singer, and that's an end of it.

  • Sorry Bill I overlooked your posting, there is another song from this show on YT, The soldiers dream.

  • Bill this recording is from an old 1968 LP.

  • Now where have I heard this lovely song before??? Oh yes, on my own channel. HOWEVER, you're sounds like it might be an earlier version than mine. Outstanding! Yours runs 2:44 and mine runs 2:59. Thanks for sharing.

  • Joe knows how put it over, superb, well sung by a Derry man.

  • The great Derry showman and no mean Tenor, at his rousing best with Goodbye from The White Horse Inn.
