Just about went through the roof when Wilbert scored on that 42yd run against the Cowboys in the Playoffs: 2nd play of the game I believe: Thanks for posting.
I have NEVER in my life seen such a disciplined runner as Wilbert Montgomery. I've watched Eagles games since 1966, and he is one of the best backs I've EVER seen in my Life!!! He hits the hole quicker than ANY back I've ever seen, then stays in his lane and uses his blazing speed to pick up yards. I've NEVER seen a back before that seems as though EVERYTIME he has the ball it looks like he's going to take it Yard! This man would hit the hole cutback then take off. Loved this team!
plntntvzn wrote a nice post but i do have a kind response to it you wrote Wilbert had more "quickness than speed" true wilbert did have as much quickness as anybody especially to the hole but what made wilbert one of the best rb's ever was he had as much speed as he did quickness, Wilbert was an all american track star at Abilene Christian U. where he ran a 100 in 9.6 seconds, also in a 2006 edition Track N Field magazine Wilbert is listed as one of the top 20 fastest rb's in nfl History.
@stratman1512 I wish Montgomery used his speed more to run around defenders more to prolong his career. He kept running over defenders instead of around them, and at 185 pounds, well, you get the idea.
To add to wilbert's amazing flat out speed when he was on abc's superstars just following the superbowl despite being on the show that year 4 times on the 1981 pleminary,The final, theSuperteams, and the Superteams Final show he was on the show with 7 injuries that he plyed the Nfc championship and the SB with that year wilbert won the 100 yard dash all 4 times recording the 2nd best timing ever next to tony Dorsett's record time in 1979,if it wasnt for the 7 injurie he would have the best
Wilbert Montgomery was shifty and had great balance. he had the speed to go wide and the strength to be effective inside. The Eagles would often move this talented athlete around and find ways to get him the ball and was a big reason for the Eagles' increased use of multiple formations. He was a versatile football who could put a strain on a defense. He had more quickness than speed, he also had strong legs, a knack for finding the right hole & a quick burst to break into secondary

@stratman1512 I did post he had the speed to go wide, so if you look carefully I was just commenting on just how quick he really was.
