@miyakagu21 I´m a little bit scared as well... I want to give it a try but..I´m just too scared XD and I turned 18 3 weeks ago isn´t that to old to do it now?...:( Damn I really want to give it a try...
I'm a practicioner of taekwondo, but I would really like getting into kendo. I've always wanted to learn how to use a sword. However, is kendo really just focused on the sport aspect of it, or does it essentially teach what would have been combat training in the 16th century for samurai and other swordsmen? Obviously I won't be getting into a sword fight, but I'm curious if kendo is a big international competition sport like taekwondo or not.
i dont even do this sport but im dieing to do it but it looks hard as hell to bend ur knees at the beginning at the fight you didnt even go halfway down is it that hard just want to know
how i wish i can learn this sport badly..but it doesn't exist in phils..if i could be given a chance to play this i will glady spar with you guys.. ^^
I am yet to begin kendo so I am not really right person to say this but you shouldnt be so agressive. I just watched an old clip with 10 dan fighting a 8 dan and he won with barely moving. He blocked couple of times then hit. Ofcourse everyone has his own style, but that old fella 10 dan looked quite impressing with only 2 or so steps.
@KirovAirship8000 my rank right now at the moment is Sankyu, nice to hear from a Rokudan! Just wondering why did you stop practicing? I'm going to attempt Niikyu this October so I hope I do well enough to pass. I've been putting a lot of hours into practice.
he s not rokudan. in kendo if you reach 6th dan, its no longer a sport, its a lifetime commitment. you dont just stop there unless you suffered some disabling injury. if you are 6th dan outside japan, you are probably international standard or a former international player
@ Itachi58kun: Everyone's a noob in the beginning so stfu
@ Wickedpoet667: Props on your fight last year. I hope you can use your knees at their full potential now, because kendo is very stressfull for your knees...
@huzbun hey, thanks for the props :) my knees feel worse but i can tell they're stronger by the fact that i can get into sonkyo now and practice most times without the use of my braces. i'm a sankyu now and hopefully getting nikyu in 5 months.
@Corey91666 ya, yonkyu is 4th kyu. best of luck to you dude :) how do you like kendo? i love it, it's like my life more than an addiction now lol. keep it up, hopefully we'll get to fight one day :)
@wickedpoet667 i love kendo... only thing that it is fucking hard :D
but i really love it.. i always wanted to be swordsman and kendo is the best way for me to be an active fighter ... also good for my personality :D
kendo is great and mb we meet eachother ... in my first tournament (teamcompitition) i fought against a 3rd dan and lost :D the other fights were draws ... it was pretty amazin but i was exhausted xD
@Corey91666 whoa, 3rd dan is a hell of a way to break yourself in for competition =-O bet it was fun though! I live in Oklahoma in the US. perhaps one day we'll fight in the world championships! or one can hope lol.
@wickedpoet667 yep it was fun... :D well noone knows whether we ll meet ;)
in 3 years the european championships may come to berlin... and if i am good enough i may go to the world championships one day ;) we just need to train ^^ rest is destiny
But wouldn't joining a tournament taint the dojo you were representing, or your very self? What is the point of paying for a tournament before learning the very basics?
I understand you can't perform sonkyo for reasons, but your tachiai, your steps, the way you step, even the way you bow were all wrong, so were the rest.
Why would someone join a tournament with barely any fundamental knowledge? No offence, just wondering.
@Gwahamir i totally understand where you're coming from. i was originally just going to test and the senseis at the tournament were very accepting of me and my dojo. one thing that got me was my nerves and i should have calmed down before. i had the basics i just got too nervous. this is not an excuse though. the best thing though is learning from the other competitors and meeting friends there. i have since gotten better and i did very well at the test. thanks for the feedback though.
@Gwahamir You were curious as to why join a tournament when you only have the very basics of kendo. I can tell you exactly why. You join early on so you know what to expect from a tournament when you really do have to know what you are doing. My sensei highly recommends it. Think of it as training for future tournys. We only do this one or two times a year. It is always a great opportunity to learn by watching what others do as well as gaining insight into their forms of kendo.
@janmac86 no, well not at the time that i competed. my knees are terribly bad so sonkyo (sitting) as well as seiza (kneeling) is almost impossible for me. I can sonkyo now but still with a lot of struggle.
@wickedpoet667 so your speed was also affected by your knees? bad handicap... There was a kendo club in our school during my freshman year but it was quickly abolished. What a waste, I was considering joining it back then. Japanese martial arts are kickass!
Hey great video, I really loved it. So what is your impression of Kendo? I'm thinking of trying it, it looks really fun and hard. And good luck in your future fights!
@Rendinhobre kendo saved my life, literally. when i started i was in horrible shape, physically and mentally. today i'm just mentally gone but at least i can last a practice lol. it is fun though! you get to hit people with sticks! seriously though, it is fun and at the same time extremely driven oriented. if you like it, go for it, try it. never hurts to try anything. just keep in mind that if you begin your kendo journey, it ain't gonna tickle. but the more you keep at it the better it feels
yup, i've been working very hard on improving my seme and creating openings instead of trying to force my way in and scoring the point. i've gotten somewhat better in relative terms but i know i have a long way to go. thank you for the help
yea, i was insane nervous. I did sonkyo (the kneeling) as best i could but my knees were very painful at the time so that's as far as i could go down like that. glad you enjoyed the fight though :)
i bought the bogu two years ago and started using it right away after 3 or 4 months of waiting to spar lol....oh and yes, i was very nervous by the way.
you can my friend :D.... it's not gonna be easy at first, in fact, the better you get and the more you improve the more they say "oh, no, that sucked" lol... but kendo, i gotta tell you, it's well worth the hours of training and sprains and bruises. more so than anything i've ever committed to. just something about this art that's gratifying
DUDEEE, i got to try on bogu and fight a teacher but seriously I don;t know what i'm doing wrong. he pushes me like 50 feet back and I cant't bloack only forward! any pointers?
he's using seme, stand your ground and if he advances drill him. also in taiatari get your hands low and drive forward with the body. i found i can taiatari better when i keep them low and drive with the hips.
Dude, we got Kendo in several places in Europe, like Holland. But hey, getting to Japan.. that's quite a privilage! I wish I got to move there. I may study there soon though
