the cutting doesn't prove that this is nonsense, it just means it is possibly nonsense. it is also possible, and not unreasonable, that the filmmakers cut the film to make it smoother to watch. although i think that with digital techniques widely available you could still tamper with a non-cutting film, or conversely claim that that was done. at least they offer a peer-reviewed paper.
I meant the clip is nonsense, not the idea - it's very poorly cut in such a way it conveys the opposite of what it claims, the idea being that anyone with half a brain just laughs off the possibility. Let's all get our terms straight. If I vote where I shouldn't that's voter fraud. This rarely happens and it's one person at a time so it's not very significant.
If I stuff a ballot box, electronically change the tally or prevent people from having access to the polls etc, that's election fraud and it happens all the time.
Attention: the National Clean Election Lawsuit has been filed in all 50 states! (google it) There's still time to stop this computer vote fraud & go back to handcounting! Take the screws out of the bottom?? At least in my state you aren't "alone" with the voting machine, there's a cardboard screen around three sides and you stand in the 4th, but if you dismantle the machine someone is gonna see.

Use voting machines that issue a receipt with an ID number and the way you voted. The local newspapers print out all the ID numbers and the way votes were cast. You check your ID number and verify the accuracy of your votes. If they don't match, call the election board. What's so tough about that?
no, you're a moron for suggesting that newspapers would print hundreds of millions of ID number/vote mathces without at least one typo. Not only that, but printing off phonebook sized pamphlets for every single household? Way too many thing could go wrong
Nick, how about if the ID numbers and ballot data was taken directly from the voting machines, printed out on sheets, and posted at at the polling place? That way, there would be almost no chance of the records getting screwed up.
Good idea, until some thugs decide to tell people, "vote the way WE say or something might happen to your nice family", and show us your receipt to prove you did.
That's why it's a "secret vote", so the thugs can't "lean" on people and change the election.
I've thought about this too. Every voter should select a password during the vote process and be issued an ID. Later they should be able to login to a web site to verify their vote. This entire Diebold architecture is crap. It should be run on a linux system running off of a read only drive. Similar to the way you would set up a firewall.
The memory card you could steal, but a way to connect it to the computer will take a lot more effort. The chip, by its shape, would not be compatible with any commercial electronics meaning you would have to make hardware to even LOOK at it the code.
What happened to all the chatter about those evil voting machines? Evidently, all the democrat fuss was just their backup plan in case the elections didn't go their way. There's just something about democratic processes that scare the crap out of Liberals. I wonder what that might be.
America is a Republic, not a Democracy, look at all of thr rich pig senators who inherited the position(money) from the blood of the poor.OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
America is one of the bastions of "true democracy" in the world. If America's democracy is allowed to become corrupted like this, then the world is going to crap.
Someone said this is stuped, yet before their eyes a reputable Ivy League school, Princeton, showed them how easy it was to hack a machine. They also wrote an entire paper on it so it can be cross-checked! You can't ever say that access to the machines have never been compromised. Police evidence lockers are hit all the time! I guess I don't understand how someone can watch this and say it is BS! Anything is possible! Don't pawn this off as impossible because a 13 year old can do it!
Don't you demand accuracy? It's hard enough to get people to vote as it is, at least count them right. It's addition people. The IRS gets their addition right, why can't you expect the government to count fairly?
Paper votes worked for most of American history, there's no reason to abandon that system. Every expense should be made to ensure voting integrity. Theres no excuse, aside from laziness, for electronic voting machines.
Because in 18 years there should be roughly 300 million voters. Election day is only one day, and not even 24 hours at that. How much man power would it take to count all those votes accurately? besides, most of those papers are counted by...machine! (dun dun dunnn)
Jeez, I don't mind the voting machines so much - just make their software transparent! Seriously, if the electoral commisssions stipulated open-source or transparent software as a condition of purchase, some companies would provide it.
Bush is a joke. And all the republicans can do is go back to Clinton and try to point fingers. Face it, you guys are in office now, no the democrats, and its your party thats fucked up the deificit, and the world as we know it. Go fight the war for your boy George and your beloved party, oh are you just an over opinionated pussy? Face it cheney and Co. are the most corrupt people in history. Shit flows downhill, and im sure we are not done hearing about the shit these guys have done.
I had my comment deleted but I didn't use hate speech or profanity. What the heck, youtube? Sarcastic responses should be banned? Eat my bum administrators.
As I said earlier, I have been testing the machines as a contractor. I have access to the machines, the cards, the security tapes and tags. All I would require is a corrupt memory card. Next to impossible? Don't kid yourself.
Well you must be some sort of "democrat" if you believe that! Only right minded republicans can see that this, just like everything else in the world is a partisan issue, a battle of good (diebold) versus evil (princeton). All democrats are democracy word stealing, conspiracy theorist, Christ deniers who wish to hand america over to mexico.
I believe I mispoke when i said next to impossible. I ment it was very improbable that all conditions required for that to be pulled off would be met without detection. that and I was attempting to look on the bright side, and say, in a round about way, no need to over react.
We definitely need to fix this problem by 2008. If only 5% of the electorate use the machine, how many of these electronic machines were in use in the key swing states of Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004? Is this a democracy or a Dieboldocracy? Voting is sacred to democracy. Help stop this outrageous danger!
I could be wrong, but I believe these were first used after the 2000 election. and I am fairly sure Ohio didn't use these in 2004, and damn sure Florida didn't use them in 2000. If they had used them there wouldn't have been a recount.
a few points here, first, for this to work someone would have to get ahold of the software that is allready installed in these machenes. right there makes this very improbable. then they would have to aquire the same exact type of memory card, and a card reader to upload the "virus" and the original OS. even more improbable. they would then have to be able to open the machene without being noticed. next to impossible.
Can´t you just buy such a voting machine? Then you´ll have such a memory card, and a blueprint of the software used.
In the case you cant buy one of those machines, maybe you could steal one. We are still talking about criminals here.
And last but not least: There is still a small chance that some people from the company which created this machine and the software feel the urge to manipulate the elections themselves.
these voteing machenes are not comercialy available. and yes someone who works for the polling office, or the OEM could obtain one, or the card and the software. I was simply pointing out the improbability of that happening due to the high security involved, and the added level of dificulty. but yes, the best way to obtain the needed hardware would be to simply steal it
Yeah because noone at Diebold would share the software with anyone right? The CEO of the company is rabid republican but no problem with that in your world?
Yes someone at Diebold could get a hold of the software. Why would the OEM share the software and further the possibility that it would get into the hands of someone with different political views. Third parties are a liability that no sane individual would consider involving. If you are going to worry about these being compromised, worry at the OEM level where they could hit every machine instead of one or two. An election can be stolen with punch cards, or have we forgotten that catastrophe.
People, this is just stupid! There are so many assumptions and holes in the Princeton study, that it is almost totally invalid. Any high schooler can do what they did, and the mitigations are simple, effective and well understood. Frankly, their study is a cynical attempt to stir panic in an uneducated government and electorate. Paper votes and absentee ballots are subject to WAY more fraud than these machines.
Name one assumption. Name one hole. Knowledgeable people have been saying for years that these machines are unreliable and insecure. Your statement that "a high school student" could manipulate these machines only adds more weight to Princeton's study. I would also like to know what possible motivation Princeton has to "stir panic in an uneducated government and electorate."
These machines were ushered in after the 2000 election by the disastrous Help America Vote Act (HAVA) whose prime author was Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio), who just this past week agreed to plead guilty to corruption. Ney and his fellow Republicans have blocked all attempts to add an amendment requiring voter verified paper trails. HAVA authorized billions of dollars for these corrupt machines and made it mandatory, in the name of access for disabled voters, for all states to use these machines.
If you are interested in election integrity and would like to get involved in monitoring the count in the November election, please let me know. Many of us are working on this and we can use all the help we can get!
Do not believe that voting Absentee is the answer. It is NOT.
GEMS Tabulators -- the Diebold designed Microsoft Program responsible for counting ALL the ballots at the County level where Diebold is servicing (Optical, DRE, paper, electronic, absentee... all ballots). Also referred to as the "Central Tabulator," "Central Server"-- the Mothership of the vote count.
In many states, Absentee Ballots are not used in recounts.
I am currently a Diebold contractor, testing machines prior to elections. Believe me, a motivated person could get access to the voting machines and pollbooks, mess with the security tags and tapes without being detected and insert malicious software. The demo video is completely plausible, regardless of software version and security provisions.
Freedom is on the March! I wish we could spread Democracy to America. Anyone caught subverting U.S. elections should be charged with committing an act of terrorism.
I'm guessing that this has already been used to steal an election (2004) or two (2000). Someone should go to jail over this. Where is our justice department when you need them?
This is as scary as Hell, and should be front page and headline news on every media outlet. When will the media stop selling "high ratings news" and start reporting news that is important to our country? Paper or plastic voting? Paper please!
Republicans steal elections. June 6th San Diego seat special election - cries of foul following the election. By 2007 the US (thanks to RFK, Jr.)will know OHIO was stolen. Machine tampering - not the only means of theft in Ohio. Blackwell placed more voting machines in Repub districts than Dem. Repub Districts finished voting early - gosh - no lines ! It help report Bush way ahead early. Thus Media buzzed Bush would win Ohio. Sure he was - the Diebold machines were rigged statewide.
Why has it taken two more years for us to finally address this issue--only one month before the election? It's almost like a punch in the face. What can be done about this before November?
This is really frightening. I was dubious about electronic voting machines from the start, and this just confirms my fears. If you live in an area where these machines are used, please go to your local officials and DEMAND the system be changed. If there's no money to buy new systems, there should be enough money to print paper ballots.
The vote is the basis of democracy. If the vote is suspect then our government is not freely elected. And that is frightening.
I'm curious as to why you have to present an ID for paper ballots, but apparently not for these fraud machines. I guess they want to make it as difficult as possible to exercise your rights, eh?
It took 3 days for 'mainstream media' to pick up on this, and even then it wasn't one of the more 'serious' outfits, it was Fox News. How on earth did the other networks and every newspaper in the country let themselves get scooped on this????
George Bush and the Republican invented this fucking diebold machine....Most of those machine are placed in HEAVY DEMOCRATIC CITIES...The idea is to steal at least 5% of the democratic votes, just enought to not be detected and get those neo-cons elected.
DELAY THE NOVEMEBER ELECTION, WE DONT WANT ANY DIEBOLD MACHINE IN DEMOCRATIC DISTRICT STATES AND CITIES.
These hacks aren't limited to these so-called DRE or "touch screen" e-voting machines. The Hursti hack in Leon County Florida proves it's just as easy to hack the optically scanned e-voting machines. And those are the ones people keep thinking are "safe" simply because they provide a "paper trail".
Very technically informative. We know that's how Bush and several others stole votes in the last two elections. BUT it would be so much more watchable with as better voice-over guy. This one talks like a computer generated robot.
Alex Pelosi's new film "Diary of a Political Tourist" catches a tipsy Congressman Peter King making a comment at a White House function before the election had been finished that, "It's already over. The Election's over. We Won."
When Pelosi asks, "How do you know that?" King replies, "It's all over but the counting. And we'll take care of the counting."
I think this was an excellent examnination of the possible security flaws of this machine. In Britian we have a paper vote - so an automatic paper trail. I would never trust any change to computer voting, its like giving away the keys to your democracy.
with our unfair senate, we dont have a democracy. IOWA & WYOMING can out vote NEW YORK with a tiny fraction of NY'S population. think about how the senate really works. catching on? try and justify it. you cannot. we all know how to do fractions, right? they do have calculators right? in a voting situation a senators vote should be in ratio to their states population. that would be a democracy.we uh never had one. awesome right?
They aren't pathetic (so far as you can generalize about all of them).. the corporate media just wants you to think that. Check out some of the very un-pathetic Democratic candidates at votevets.org.. and find out more about your local Democratic candidates. Chances are they are better than you think. If you really want the senseless war in Iraq to end (or the other ways in which Bush & Co. are killing people-- poverty here in the U.S., etc.) then get involved and help get Democrats elected. :)
The ends justifies the means. If this will keep Republicans in office, then it is worth it even if it is cheating. People think the want Democrats in office, but that is not what is best for them.
EXCELLENT! Every club/org'n in every U.S. town and city needs to air this on their local tv network. Use portable DVD players, share this message with people on the street. PLEASE, young people, keep talking, discuss everything, and QUESTION AUTHORITY, always. We're listening. Demand accountiblity and fairness. VOTE! Register absentee for a paper receipt. You're important. From an active oldster, thank you to the maker of this video!
The issues presented here are not unique to computer based voting. No matter what a machine can be tampered with. That is why to start with, all "election officials" should be American citizens with no criminal records and all voters should be American citizens with IQ's above 95, etc.
I think the frightening point is that there is no audit trail - no paper output from the machine that could be correlated, at least with punched card baded voting, there is physical evidence, ok don't mention hanging chads!
I think everybody should contact Diebold and get them to address this. This needs to be come a public relations issue for them so that they address this issue.
This is how Republicans "win" elections despite all the exit polls saying that they should have lost.
The greatest threat to "our freedoms" stems from the corruption that is at the foundation of all that Bush et al have done so far.
At this rate we'll be a total dictatorship in a few more years. Stay the course? Hell no!!!
Paper trail, voter verifiable voting is the way to go. Why would the Republicans object to this? Obviously, they know they can't win real free and fair elections.
Democrats don't have to fix elections because they have the same values as the majority of the people. The only way the Republicans can win is by fixing elections via fraud and hate mongering. All I ask for is a clean election.
Amen, nilent, couldn't agree more. And yes booboo, voter fraud is hardly a new concept. Just look at the goings on in Ohio in 2004, it wasn't just the voting machines. And yes, both sides do it, that does NOT make it right, acceptable etc. The point is these machines make it so much easier to do it on a GRAND scale that we can't sit back and let them be used.
It doesn't take long to count paper ballots with adequate staffing. The dollars spent on these type of machines could have went to some things worth while.
Crap, I hate injustice. I hate liars. To debunk an election, what the fuck happened to those political hackers as children? No matter what it is I can guarentee it is no excuse to obliterate elections and transform America into a monarchy. What we need is a nation for honesty not more locks and keys and codes, I am so angry at the state of America I could go beat up my mother.
And the Republican candidate for governor of Ohio tried to stipulate that ONLY Diebold voting machines can be used in Ohio AND arranged a $50,000 "donation" from Diebold to a charity in Pennsylvania. Go figure!
Yes, they don't care. Win at all costs even if the cost is Democracy. Power is the objective followed by it's offspring, wealth and corruption. the NeoCons have simply been "re-educated" (a la PolPot)
It is an attempt by the people at Princeton to inform the public about this flaw so that the manufacturer is pressured to remedy the situation. What is partisan about creating a situation in which a fair election is more assured?
They are not claiming that Bush's election was caused by Diebold machine hacks. They are stating that these machines CAN be hacked and that the manufacturer has issues they must address in order to secure their machines.
How to steal an election- Electronically. The Bush guys had it down to a fine art.

The solution is simple:
Use voting machines that issue a receipt with an ID number and the way you voted. The local newspapers print out all the ID numbers and the way votes were cast. You check your ID number and verify the accuracy of your votes. If they don't match, call the election board. What's so tough about that?

bushputz 4 years ago
Good idea, until some thugs decide to tell people, "vote the way WE say or something might happen to your nice family", and show us your receipt to prove you did.
That's why it's a "secret vote", so the thugs can't "lean" on people and change the election.

Good point. Damn, I hate thugs
bushputz 4 years ago
I've thought about this too. Every voter should select a password during the vote process and be issued an ID. Later they should be able to login to a web site to verify their vote. This entire Diebold architecture is crap. It should be run on a linux system running off of a read only drive. Similar to the way you would set up a firewall.

Corrent. Paper, pen, manual count is the most transparent and accurate way. Among Western democracies only the US uses these machines. Why?

Because in 18 years there should be roughly 300 million voters. Election day is only one day, and not even 24 hours at that. How much man power would it take to count all those votes accurately? besides, most of those papers are counted by...machine! (dun dun dunnn)

Well you must be some sort of "democrat" if you believe that! Only right minded republicans can see that this, just like everything else in the world is a partisan issue, a battle of good (diebold) versus evil (princeton). All democrats are democracy word stealing, conspiracy theorist, Christ deniers who wish to hand america over to mexico.
creeg 5 years ago
I believe I mispoke when i said next to impossible. I ment it was very improbable that all conditions required for that to be pulled off would be met without detection. that and I was attempting to look on the bright side, and say, in a round about way, no need to over react.
tomsirvo 5 years ago
We definitely need to fix this problem by 2008. If only 5% of the electorate use the machine, how many of these electronic machines were in use in the key swing states of Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004? Is this a democracy or a Dieboldocracy? Voting is sacred to democracy. Help stop this outrageous danger!
dmcgetch 5 years ago
I could be wrong, but I believe these were first used after the 2000 election. and I am fairly sure Ohio didn't use these in 2004, and damn sure Florida didn't use them in 2000. If they had used them there wouldn't have been a recount.
tomsirvo 5 years ago
Holy god! Just get rid of these machines! Don't you want a safer system?
creeg 5 years ago
a few points here, first, for this to work someone would have to get ahold of the software that is allready installed in these machenes. right there makes this very improbable. then they would have to aquire the same exact type of memory card, and a card reader to upload the "virus" and the original OS. even more improbable. they would then have to be able to open the machene without being noticed. next to impossible.
tomsirvo 5 years ago
Can´t you just buy such a voting machine? Then you´ll have such a memory card, and a blueprint of the software used.
In the case you cant buy one of those machines, maybe you could steal one. We are still talking about criminals here.
And last but not least: There is still a small chance that some people from the company which created this machine and the software feel the urge to manipulate the elections themselves.
Druesling 5 years ago
these voteing machenes are not comercialy available. and yes someone who works for the polling office, or the OEM could obtain one, or the card and the software. I was simply pointing out the improbability of that happening due to the high security involved, and the added level of dificulty. but yes, the best way to obtain the needed hardware would be to simply steal it
tomsirvo 5 years ago
Yeah because noone at Diebold would share the software with anyone right? The CEO of the company is rabid republican but no problem with that in your world?
sondano 5 years ago
Yes someone at Diebold could get a hold of the software. Why would the OEM share the software and further the possibility that it would get into the hands of someone with different political views. Third parties are a liability that no sane individual would consider involving. If you are going to worry about these being compromised, worry at the OEM level where they could hit every machine instead of one or two. An election can be stolen with punch cards, or have we forgotten that catastrophe.

Paper votes and absentee ballots are subject to WAY more fraud than these machines.
stuebe 5 years ago

And that is frightening.

with our unfair senate, we dont have a democracy. The greatest threat to "our freedoms" stems from the corruption that is at the foundation of all that Bush et al have done so far.
At this rate we'll be a total dictatorship in a few more years. Stay the course? Hell no!!!
