  • One of my best game i ever played and i always play it online at ssega dot com

  • i was trying to find how many copies were sold and how much the game is actually worth I have it and love it i just wanna know out of curiosity not to many people that iknow have even heard of it .

  • Lovely game, you can see its a Toaplan jobbie, also its a definete influence of Battle Garrega and Bakraid.. In 1990 when you see those massive laser beams stretching across the screen and then UPGRADING you are definetely impressed.. And what a soundtrack!

  • This seems like a updated (back then) "River Raid" to me.

  • The logic of video games.

  • The second he started talking about when he would make his vertical shooter I was like "Oh my. This is when the magic happened."

  • I WANT WIND SQUID!!!

  • Me and my friend used to play the crap out of this game. My god that music kicks ass! And that flamethrower powerup is the best weapon ever.

  • i'd buy wind squid , when its out ?

  • I keep wondering if some indie game label will finally contact the cgr guy in this video and ask him to write and direct a game.

  • Just got this today... all thanks to Mark. This guy could review a ham sandwich, and it would be exciting.

  • @mazze84 He should do some cold cuts... Great idea.

  • Mark's commentary from 2:30 - 3:38 had me laughing hysterically for quite some time. In Mark's River Raid review, he goes off on a similar tangent as well. Nothing like watching reviews that make you laugh your ass off.

  • is the PAL version of this game rare now? I saw one complete copy on ebay for £25?

  • Is it me was the megadrive a lot lot better than the snes for shooters plus the game was released in the arcades in the 1989

  • @TheBazman111 No man it is not you, when sega made megadrive they used a motorola 68000 @ 7,6Mhz, arcades at that time was motorola @10Mhz, sega couldn't kill its arcade too so downgrade its home console, that is the reason megadrive came from arcade and many game hadn't censure, about snes work at 3,5Mhz and was planned for family not addict games.

  • I have the Genesis version of this game, and I thought it was a neat game. I remember spending a lot of time on it trying to beat it. After many hours of playing this game, I finally conquered it. :)

  • i remember spending countless coins on this game in the arcade near my school(all my lunch money),at the end i could beat this game with 1 life.and after you finish this game, you just keep playing from the beginning but the enemies become so much harder, shoot twice as faster.

  • Haha great commentary about the contractors and the catalog!

  • Truxton truxton!

  • Thumbs up if you came from TRUXTON review...

  • Truxton :O

  • The plot of this game is of course pretty weird, at least in the US manual. You're apparently a time traveler that has collected weapons from the future and you traveled to the time when this game takes place to fight a massive army that was built up to take over the world simply because you want to challenge yourself against impossible odds.

    Seriously.

  • Impossible odds...suicide mission...BUT MASS EFFECT 2 WASNT THERE THAT TIME!!!

  • I want to buy genesis and this game just to hear its starting riff!

  • got this in the box for four bucks, great game btw

  • can this game be played for 2 players?

  • so i get quicklier when i take this

    im faster?

  • the P is for power B = bomb and S is for what?

  • @Sashomei derp S is most common in shmup that stood for Speed

  • @Sashomei

    Speed up.

  • ehh brings tears to my eyes :-) used to play this every day when i was a kid.

  • Fun looking

  • Funny that you ended the review at that mother ship, becaue right before i watched this, thats the same place i ended my game play! Like you said, its a solid game, but some aspects are just annoying. For one, the repeat soundtrack, if you notice that once you get to stage 5 or so, the music is the same as stage one. Also, perhaps the most agrivating part of the game, is the "chicklets" that never seem to go away. i dont think you should ever have to dodge power ups in any game.

  • you can tell its a mega drive game just by the music :)

  • Damn those chiclets!

  • have to say, that red power up is totally bad ass looks like a flaming bird that destroys its foes with but a flap of its wings

  • so this is where wind squuid came from

  • Yes,it was based on an arcade game, created by Toaplan in 1989.

You can also play the original arcade version through Mame.

  • Nice review! i use this game to determin how drunk i am, if i can get past level 10 i'm fine if i get stuck at around level 6 i'm in danger of been attracted to something frightful, if i cant get past the third level i should avoid any contact with anyone who knows me (that includes pets) and if i can't manage the first level i should despratly seek out medical attention!!

  • I used to have Tiger-heli for the original NES. One day, I was bored and wondered if the game actually had an ending. So, I set the GameGenie and let the game run for a few hours. I later returned to find the game was still running. You play until you die - there is no ending goal, which makes for a very dull game when you find out you can't win.

My point being, in any of these top shooters it should be noted when play is infinite, with no goal, and no chance to win.

  • @FascistFrenchman hahah i used to play that game alot. thats rediculous it doesnt have an ending!!!

  • what is the sega megadrive?

  • @bitbat9 OH MY GOD

  • @bitbat9 The PAL name for the Sega Genesis.

  • @bitbat9 lets just say it's a good system at the very very least

  • @bitbat9 its a game system

  • @123doomdoom Yeah I know, I did not realize that it is the PAL name for the genesis

  • lol insurance claims

  • From the title, I thought you catch sharks using flamethrowers but alas...

  • T_T I've searching this game for years, I played it when I was a kid and I had my Megadrive, but the cartridge puts "Tora! Tora! Tora!" not "Fire Shark" and it does not EXISTS on the WHOLE internet T_T

I almost cryed when I puted the Japanese version of Fire Shark and the title was:

    トラ! トラ! トラ!

OMG!!! IT MEANS "TORA! TORA! TORA!"

  • @tonyburza RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I just bought this game tonight! $1.99 well spent!

  • If memory serves, the pilot of the Fire Shark was a time traveler, who equipped his plane with weapons from different eras. I believe that this game was a clone of Truxton, an arcade game with a Mega Drive port.

  • i still play this. i beat it 5 times but this game is hard as hell. certainly a classic

  • Sponger00, I have played that game. The machine was in a pizza restaurant in Puerto Rico. It was hard. Your ship was slow, but cool: when you move backwards the reverse thrusters fire. The demo shows a boss that looks like a bat-like plane that seems to pre-date the bi-planes of WWI (as if made by the Wright Brothers) firing many bullets until it kills the starship. And I remember those red mines. Can't remember the name. :-(

  • @EldarGeneralKanegron i never read your comment bro, that is exactly the game i am talking about i remember the bat-like plane that was one of the bosses, it is a shame you dont remember the name i just cant find it anywhere

  • @EldarGeneralKanegron anybody else remember the game we are talking about? i would really like to get it, heeeeeeeeeeeeelp

  • hahaha this game looks EXACTLY LIKE Raiden Trad

  • i searched for Time Pilot, GEkirindan and Strikers 1945, and none is the one i am looking for, they are very similar, but the one i search for, uses some kind of future type plane, not a real life plane, and the most powerfull weapon that you could achive was some kind of arch, like a moon when it is only a quarter... i remember that one of he bosses was a zeppelin that was throwing some balls in color orange and brown that where some kind of air mines, thanks for your help

  • probally*

  • probably*

  • what is he talking about the graphics and the music are great! so epic and memorable!

  • i know, its proballt my fav. flying game

  • Sponger00: I believe the game that you're referring to is called Steel Empire.

  • Does anyone knows of one similar game, but the plane was some kind of space craft fighting in different dates, i remember fighting a zeppelin that threw at you some kind of red and grey colored balls, at the end of the game you were fighting in space with all kind of space crafts, i am looking for it, but i dont remeber the name, please helpme

  • @Sponger00

Well, it's not exactly what you're describing, but Strikers 1945 is incredibly close. Check it out.

  • @Sponger00

    the game is known as

    gekirindan

  • @Sponger00, Time Pilot, is the game your thinking of. I love that game, ah, Time Pilot... and if that not the game idk what your thinking of, because you just described Time Pilot 100%

  • @BLUErobotman hey dude, i saw time pilot and is not that one, as i remember it was a space craft you were piloting, not an airplane, i remember fighting biplanes, to jets and space ships at the end, the grafics were very similar to this one in the review, time pilot is a very basic game, very fun to play too, but is not the one i used to play as a kid, thanks fir the response

  • I really like this one :)

  • which do you recommend Truxton or Fire Shark? Please Respond!

  • Both! Truxton and Fire Shark!

  • Thanks to this review i bought me a copy of Fire Shark. This game kicks major ass. Also got Twin Cobra on the way. Thank you Classic Game Room HD for introducing me to these lost Genesis treasures i had no idea existed.

  • I'm more of a Truxton man myself

  • that music is still with me...it's the intro music that got me hooked to this 4-in-1 sega cartridge; way back 1990's i didn't know the name of the game until just....now since it was written in japanese characters...too late for an old man. Hahahaha but i prefer thunderforce iii over this - game play + all its music.

  • Wow, this was the first video game I played. I still remember it was in 1991. Oh man the memories!

  • You should review Cloud master for Master system.

  • this is really similar to the raiden project!

  • is this were he cums up with windsquid?

  • I paid $3 for this great game :)

Love the megadrive. best console ever imho

  • Amen!

  • @AndrewTSq what do IMO and IMHO mean?

  • @PaulHark9 only god can tell :/

  • @PaulHark9 In my opinion In my humble opinion

  • This game sounds so much like Raiden.....it isnt a bad game though.

  • Yes, it was an arcade game. The super fire gun effects where awesome.

  • Yeah and also a game for Sega and i still got this game on my megadrive and pc.

i fuckin hate the 3rd level where those planes come with the weapons and i just wanna stay with the red lazer gun.

  • rip ricardo, u loved this game .

  • such a great game

  • The origin of Wind Squid, eh?

  • That red super-gun is somewhat overkill, wouldn't you say?

  • anyone know any games like this where you can upgrade your gun to a super weapon? (other than this)

  • I think the shotgun weapon is better suited for the bossfights. Because the spreadshot can do more damage than the flamethrower against larger targets

  • Oh man, this is probably my favorite game for the Sega Genesis, i loved it so much and had to see if you had a review on it, and yes he did! The music is unbelievable in this game Imo.

  • u got to love the intro music :-)

  • This game is hard

  • this game is the best i cant believe i still have it and the game system

  • he mentioned raiden 3 but why not raiden trad? that also looks like this game. It came bundled with a turbo controller. I didnt even know a raiden 3 existed.

  • Lmfao End Boss bought from Catalogs ;P

  • "What do you mean the 3rd and 4th regiment were destroyed?! Single handedly...by a what?!?! ..."

  • I love this game, in order to be successful at it you need to be focused and concentrated. I only beat it once on easy i still think it is the hardest genesis game. Be prepared to drop a lot of Fbombs when you first start out playing

  • Hey, looks OK man, I'll grab a copy if I see one down the car boot sale.. I must say, as a kid I never really enjoyed shoot 'em ups too much - more a platform/fighter person, but in my old age (!) I'v started to appreciated them ALOT more and am buying those old titles I skipped over.

  • hey CGRHD, do you remember an angel-shmup by the name of gynoug, with some of the evilest looking end bosses ever? you should give it a try!

  • Awesome. I haven't seen this game since I was like 15 -that rad guitar solo at the beginning of level one got me psyched up!

  • "your biplane is so fragile...even harsh language will damage it"

    hahah

  • PS3!!!

  • a great classic shmup - the energy beam weapon is somewhat overpowered, but great fun at the same time.

  • Woah! Really cool! WIND SQUID!!!! That's a really good title!

  • zi pino!!!!!!

  • FIRE,

    SHARK,

Fucking matcho, yeah...AHAHAHAH! I love you!

    This game rocks!

  • Something I cant figure out about the game is the 'Shark Beam' (the green laser). I mean it has the most narrow corridor of fire in the game which usually makes sense if the weapon is powerful, yet its weaker than the flame laser which can spread over the whole screen?

Anyway, Wind Squid - that game is money developers and you know it!

  • toaplan made some great shooters that were on the mega drive fire sharks pretty cool but i prefere others like truxton, hellfire, twin hawk and not forgeting zero wing with its fecked up translation - all your base are belong to us... they set us up the bomb! lol its great. thanx for the vid

  • The prequel to this game was called "Sky Shark". In the arcades it also went by the name "Flying Shark". It was a Taito game. The arcade game, as I remember it, was awesome, with a fairly punishing difficulty. The powerups only applied to your shooting (no speed powerups) and it went as follows:

2 bullet shot -> 4 bullet shotgun spread -> 6 bullet shotgun spread

  • lmao @ "wind squid" hahaha ..greatest video game reviews i've come across on youtube besides the angry nintendo nerd.. i love seeing all the reviews for these old shoot em up games.

  • Pick up all weapon powerups to increase the number of extra life pickups.

Don't bomb at all for max point gain.

Don't get to level 8 carrier and lose all your lives by keeping all the turrets on the screen.

  • its a ripoff from raiden for genesis

  • You have it backwards. Toa Plan (the makers of this game) practically invented vertical scrolling shooters. Seibu (who made Raiden) copied Toa Plan not the other way around. Also both are ports of (much better) arcade games.

  • This game does seem really similar to raiden project. HOwever they are made by differnet companies. He also metioned raiden 3 how are they related?

  • It's hard to believe that the game is VERY HARD when you have a mega lightning death-ray killing everything on screen.

  • i f**king love this game

  • I would buy wind squid

  • Looks similar to the old Neo-Geo shooters, a good thing!

  • The Neo-Geo has a bunch of great shooters Have you ever played Blazing Star :]??

  • Thanks for breaking down the economics of the vertical shooter world for me, Mark. I'm terrible at this genre but knowing that I've forced evil bad guys to get sub-prime loans to replace early level death machines makes me feel better.

  • You can defeat them by forcing them into bankruptcy. It just takes longer, leave the Genesis plugged in, put FIRE SHARK on pause and go away for a week. When you come back all the bad guys will have been laid off and you'll win by default. -CGRHD

  • man you think up the wierdest things lol, funny though

  • @InecomCompany LOL i was gonna try to make them try to get a real job I trick them into saying it pays a lot tell them to buy a super nice apartment and then reveal to them they are working at Mc Donalds and they try to make money from working for 29 years and they won't even remember trying to kill me but they say I'm familiar looking and they give me a discount at Mc Donalds whenever they are the cashier fail proof plan Mark, Fail Proof plan.

  • I enjoy the way you say "Wind.Squid."

  • is it me, ro is the theme song sped up a little

  • If they come out with Wind Squid, for sure I'll buy it. 8 legs and 2 tentacles! Fire Shark was a good game and I still play to this day.

  • i love this game and i love the intro to the show

  • I have beat this game. Its a very basic shoot em up game. But like you said, it is fun and the game play is solid. Hahaha Wind Squid sounds like an awesome game!

  • sweet another review

  • actualy no, and its not an accomplishment

  • lol i remember playing this when i was 7 and i sucked.my aunt actually played better than me
