I love that scene from Yojimbo where he slices the two guys and cuts the other guys arm off, sheathes his sword and casually walks off,too badass for words.
I hope we all realize that "ranking" filmmakers is amazingly arbitrary and meaningless. I mean, I love me some foreign films. Giving them ranks seems awfully pretentious.
ah, Yojimbo the bodyguard is my favorite among the three films, the twelve samuraj is very good as well..or honestly they're all very well made I cant just pick one or two :))
You can run through this excellently done clip and name the scenes later cited or better, used by other filmmakers: The boy he spared - Tarantino, the cut off arm - Lucas, the show-down - Leone ...
hmm, i dont think Obi-wans character matches with Rokurota, --his boldness, mascurinity and rather arrogant character doesnt apply to Obi-wans more discreet ones. well, you might be right both men share the skill with sword and unweavering royality, but Obi-wan is Lucas s creation, i guess?
well yeah, Obi Wan is Lucas' creation, but he was obviously influenced by these films, as he said so himself. Jedi themselves are based on Samurai, so I bet there are a lot of similarities.
@shieldforumJim Not just that, Lucas admitted to copying a lot from Kurosawa.
Try watching the bonus features on the DVD of Kagemusha, you get an actual interview of Lucas saying that the two characters:R2 and C3PO were directly related to the two peasant characters in the Hidden Fortress
@Trenidor I remember reading that somewhere. And it really shows when you watch SW again. The entire story is seen through the eyes of the 2 weakest characters in the story, just like in the Hidden Fortress.
Anyone who make a tribute to Akira Kurosawa is alright in my book. My personal favorites:
Yojimbo
Red Beard
7 Samurai
Roshomon (is a masterpiece that should be seen by everyone.)
Dreams
Kagemusha
Dersu Uzala...
Tatsuya Nakadai (gun-toting villian in Yojimbo, King in Ran) is still alive and you can see many of his interviews on walking out of the burning Castle in Ran etc. by seeing Kurosawa's films out of the Criterion Collection.
I'm becoming convinced though that if you like that kind of movie which makes you think (as most of Kurosawa's do) Rashomon tops them all.
It may or may not be Kurosawa's best film, but it is definately a film worth recognizing.
If I come up with the money to buy it I'll make a mash-up of it for you guys. If you haven't seen it, I would definately recommend getting on the waiting list at your local video store (where I live there were like 10 people in line in front of me for it)
Most of Kurosawa's work could be considered Film Noir based on the criteria they use to describe the genere.
If you're refering to "Stray Dog" however (the one most people think of when you combine noir and kurosawa)...Yes, it is a good film. Also, "The Bad Sleep Well" is good as far as noir.
How do you classify a tribute and maybe my next piece of work will suit your expectations...
For me, a tribute is something people come back to and realize, in awe, how great a person was or is. In this case, I feel I have done a good job: people watch this video and comment on Mifune and Kurosawa's skill. There is a realization of greatness in watching these.
The Man which Toshiro Mifune threw a dagger in the arm was Tetsuya Nakadai who would later team up with Kurosawa on "Kagemusha" and "Ran" portraying equally great and diverse roles. "Ran" one of Kurosawa's ultimate best (besides Seven Samurai of course.)
SoujiroOkita : I like Kitano's humor and of course it's really prevalent in the film Kikujiro. He's also a huge comedic TV actor in Japan. Surprising contrast to his usual roles as a gangster.
i didn't know that he died so "recently"!
i thought he died in the 70's

Just my own opinion, of course, but I'd say Kurosawa could easily be called the greatest film maker of all time.
Definitely my fav.

@emfalcone ... and what about Bergman, Kubrick, Renoir, Houston, Fellini, Pasoline, Kaurismäki, Lean, Hitchcock,

Kubrick and Hitchcock are overrated.

Kurosawa and Mifune made the best japanese cinema together. Nowadays, artists like Kitano and Yamada keep on that artistic way.
