  • is that bass with Bartolini pups or Lakland pups?

  • @sungyulkim This is an older 55-94(2004) with Barts! I was an artist with Lakland for about 5-6 years...I still play 4 of them! I didn't care too much for the newer pickups and preamps.Just my preference.

  • I hear ya, they have great action, thanks for the reply brother keep up the great work

  • lakland makes some really good basses,Ive a 55-02 and a joe osborn and they are the bomb

  • @dreadtodred yeah man,they're great basses.I have a 55-94 fretted and fretless,Bob Glaub P-bass and a Joe Osborn U.S. 5.Wouldn't trade em for anything!

  • great groove that lakland is heavy

  • @dreadtodred THANKS!!

  • @jcsgroove youre welcome,Peace.

  • Wow now's that's some serious pocket playing right here 8)

Thanks for the post and for giving props to this awesome drummer cause even if you nailed this groove with class, it 'd never have sounded the same if the drummer wasn't that strong and pocket focused.

    Peace out.

  • @Fjord76 Thanks bro! Lookup the name Buddy Williams on youtube and see what happens next!! He's one of the greats of our time! Played with everybody from Luther Vandross to Lee Ritenour.I was honored to share the stage with him.

  • Awesome playing! If you don't mind me asking, in which tuning is your bass actually? I see you taking that octave-line completely on the fretboard, which would mean that your bass is tuned one fret down Bb being the lowest string, or lower, but Bb is my guess.

  • @Oelm3n How's everything brother?Good guess! hahaha! I am indeed using E-flat tuning...all flats Bb to Gb.I grew up playing gospel music so it was the thing to do back in the day.I tune my 4 string basses either standard or a whole step down to D.

Just depends on what I'm doing.

    Peace

    JC

  • @Oelm3n thanks for the comment too!

  • Yo Jackie!

Hey man how you doin? Do you give lessons? Or have any suggestions on what to study to become more versitile like yourself?

  • @GunGrave112985 I'm not sure if I responded to this note but I currently don't give lessons as I am self-taught.I can read because I played trombone for a few years! :-) Everything else,I learned from listening to records.I also play piano so that helps my ears as well. I would suggest finding a private teacher if possible. There are many sites online you can go to these days too!

    Peace,

    JC

  • I bite my lip as well when I concentrate. Nice groove.

  • hahaha! Thanks!

  • Great groove!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am inderested to buy a lakland can you help me???

  • Thanks!!! You can send me a private message here at youtube.I can answer any questions you have about the basses.

    peace,

    JC

  • those laklands really do the trick. I just love the way they sound and how they look. Gotto buy me one soon. Love the way you play as well.

  • Extremely versatile basses!!! Thanks for the comment!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • wich amp do you use?

  • I play and endorse EBS exclusively! In this clip,I'm using the EBS TD650 amp with 2-4X10 EBS Evolution Proline cabs. You can see the exact rig on my youtube profile background pic.You can also go to the EBS website to see more gear!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • Great playing Jackie.

I've listen to this vid at least 20 times.

Great song, great signer, great arrangements, and a killer bass tone !

    Thanks for sharing this !

  • Thanks a lot brother!!!

    JC

  • i like the playing and the song . is this an original?

  • Hey thanks...I'm trying my best to stay awake because of the jetlag! The song is a Chaka Khan song but Peabo decided to cover it for an encore this particular night.

    Glad you enjoyed the ckip!

    peace,

    Jackie

  • Awesome stuff man, keep posting vids! Subscribed!

  • How's it going brother? Thanks a lot!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • Hey Jackie,

I'm digging what you are laying down. I'm a young guy looking to make it where you are and I always love sitting in pits/watching guys like you lay down groove.

I know everyone asks about your Lakland, I was wondering what type of amp/cabinet setup you run? It compliments the Lakland very well!

I wish I could get myself a 34" scale Lakland 5, but I have a feeling it would kill the tone that Dan Lakin has made.

    Peace and love,

    Tom

  • Hey Tom,how's it going bro? No worries about the questions, always glad to help!

I play and endorse EBS amps, cabs, and pedals EXCLUSIVELY! In this clip,I'm using an EBS TD650 amp with 2 EBS Evolution Pro 2000 4X10 cabs.the cabs are side by side on the floor.

I usually keep the amp flat and use the EQ from the bass unless it's a passive bass.Even with a passive bass, the tone is just right with the amp set flat!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • Scott! Not sure if I mentioned but I'm actually working on my 1st ever solo cd! It's not a bass record per se but it does feature bass on a few songs.

It also features me on piano and all the keyboards.I was a keyboardist long before bass called my name!! haha! I'm a bit rusty on keys but it's starting to com back after a 7 yr layoff!I'll keep you posted!

    Peace,

    JC

  • incredible, but I think your sound is more coming from your flawless technique not just that killer 55-94 tone, 5 stars keep those vids coming.

  • Thanks bro!!! I appreciate that...It does help to have an axe that feels right!! I need all the help I can get! hahaha!

  • Smooth !!!! ;-)

  • Hey thanks a lot!!!!

    Peace,

    JC

  • very good...

    i have your same bass..

  • Thanks for the comment..I appreciate it!!! Lakland are great aren't they?!

  • Still loving it Jackie, don't let up!

Keep us informed with your current work!

  • Hello Jackie,

I wonder if your 55-94 is custom pink color or cherry burst? May I have some photos of it?

And you are the original owner? May I know that how much you paid for it?

    Thanks a lot

  • man i keep returning to this video when i'm bored at work and want to listen to a killer groove. POCKET CITY! You did a great job! I have the JO5 (skyline) and been thinking about a 55-02, you sold me on it. Nice job buddy!

  • Thanks a lot...we're actually getting ready to go back to London in 3 weeks to play with this artist again...with the SAME DRUMMER!!! makes it easier when a drummer is solid like Buddy Williams! I have a U.S. JO5 and the bass on this vid is a U.S. 55-94 with Bartolini p/u's

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • Love your playing and your bass!!!

  • Thanks for the comment!!!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • if you have for sale 2ndhand lakland bass same this model. please contact me.. thanks

  • How's everything? thanks for reaching out.Unfortunately I've sold all the Laklands I'm not using at this time.I had 8 of them at one time but, I've kept the best 4.

My only other Lakland like the one in this video is a fretless and I gotta keep that one! :-) I also have the Joe Osborn U.S. 5-string and a Lakland Bob Glaub p-bass. I'm sorry I couldn't help you this time but, I hope you're able to find one that you really like!!

    Take care,

    Jackie

  • you are one the last of the great stay in the groove basses, you know what it takes.Peace!

  • Thanks man, that means a lot to hear that from my groove family! I always tell people I'd rather get paid than be famous! haha! Staying in the groove will go a long way in helping to achieve that goal! :-)

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • I love the fact that you stayed in the pocket man. You a beast!!!!!!

BTW this is Phil's cuz Aaron! =)

  • what is 'the pocket' ?

  • Staying with in the rhythm and beat of the song instead of shedding anywhere in the timing.

  • Jackie!

I've listened to more of the Angie Stone material and I am completely blown away by your playing, both in tone and in style. The world needs players out there like you. Keep us posted with whatever you do in the future!

    Scott

  • Hey man, that's awfully nice of you to say bro!! Thanks a lot! I'm actually working on my 1st ever CD as we speak! I'm nearly done...just waiting on a few friends to add thier parts...I'm playing all the bass and keys on it.you can check my myspace page for demos of the tracks.

I'll keep you posted on the progress!

    Peace,

    JC

  • Nice tune...youve got some groove man...

  • Thanks a lot my friend,I really appreciate the comment!!! It helps when you're playing with such a SOLID drummer....BUDDY WILLIAMS!!! Look him up on youtube and see all the greats he's played with!

    Peace,

    jackie

  • yeah i came back for a second look..wats yer band called???

  • This band was the houseband for all the artists that night. They call us the David Gest World Concerts Orchestra cause we're from different parts of the world I guess! haha!

  • Jackie,

Do you like the Bartolini pickups or the Lakland pickups?

  • I prefer the Bartolini pickups.I go by the old saying,"if it ain't broke....don't fix it!" haha! I love the way my basses sound now with the Barts and Lindy Fralin pickups.I have nothing agaisnt the new system...there's just no reason to change what's working for me now.

My basses sound great live and in the studio...of course they feel great too!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • Hey man, am doing a big gig atm with my 55-94, and the sound guy loves the bass. He's one of the best, he does sound for the Australia Idol final concerts. And to be honest, this bass has changed the way i play, and watching this video has given me a great insight to what it is capable of. I dig your playing man, cheers for sharing the groove! Dan

  • Nice playing mate. I'm looking at getting a 55-02, although I'm also debating saving more for a 55-94.

  • Thanks for the comment my friend! Take some time and compare both basses. They are very similar but there are noticeable differences between both models.I've owned a couple of 55-02 basses and they were both great! I used them when I traveled. When I needed that pure Lakland sound,I always brought my 55-94 though.

Good luck with finding the right one for you!

    Jackie

  • Man, Jackie! If I had know what I know now. I wouldn't have let you leave Guitar Center when I met you.LOL! You were so low keyed, I didn't know I was talking to such a BEAST! Hope all is well. Peace, Leekielowe

  • Hahaha! Wassup dude? It's been a minute! Thanks man, always good to hear from youbro...Man,I'm not trying to be famous:-)just wanna get hired to play a little bass from time to time!! hahaha!

Hope everything's cool with you bro!!

    peace,

    JC

  • Nice bass and nice tune Bro!. May I know what are your tone settings?

  • Thanks!!! I play and endorse EBS gear exclusively! I'm using an EBS TD650 with 2 4X10 cabs. The amp is set FLAT! My Lakland 55-94 has Bartolini pickups and preamp. My bass control is at about 2 o'clock. My mids are at about 2 o'clock and boosted at 250Hz for definition and punch on the b-string and my highas are set around 3-4 o'clock

  • Ha! My setup is almost the same! The only difference is that my Lakland is a 55-02. I have to have a play with your EQ settings when I hook it all up in church this weekend.

Love your playing mate...keep it thumping!

  • Hey brother, how's everything? Yeah that's a great starting point for the 55 series basses!! I have the mid frequency dipswitch inside the control cavity set at 250hz.That frequency seems to make the lower register on the B-string speak a little clearer in my opinion.

Hope it works out for you! Thanks for the comments!!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • Nice bass and nice groove bro!.. May I know your sound setting in the bass and in the amps?

    Many thanks from Australia

  • Am I a wallet? Cuz all I'm hearing and seeing is pocket. Great stuff man, I'm saving my pennies for a 55-94 as well! If I can sound as decent as you, money well spent.

  • Hahahaha! Haven't heard that one before! I may have to pay you residuals to use that phrase!! hahaha! Thanks for the comment brother.

    Take care,

    Jackie

  • Fantastic!!!! Your playing (and choice of bass) is superb.

  • SCOTT!!! How are you brother? Thanks for the comment!! I've said it a hundred times,it's easier to sound great when your bandmates are great too! haha!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • Have any recordings or CDs that you're on? I'd love to groove to it.

    Keep up the soul!

    Scott

  • yeaaah grooove baby...;) hi from TURKEY..

  • true groove man, true groove

  • Thanks bro!! It helps to have a drummer like Buddy Williams laying it down for you!! hahaha! Do a search on him here at youtube. He's SOLID! He also helped get Marcus Miller's career started!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • buddy williams is my father

  • i play drums, guitar, and i play a little bit of the bass

  • Wassup brother??!!! I guess I don't have to tell you what a legend your dad is then!!! hahaha! I talked to your dad about 2 days ago! We're supposed to be going back to London soon with David Gest again. Like I tell everyone,he makes me sound like I know what I'm doing! :-) Thanks for hitting me up bro!

    Peace.

    Jackie

  • Awesome playing man! Great bass too. I just bought a 55-94 and found this video while i was waiting for it to arrive. Best guitar I have ever laid my hands on! Every note is clear, full, round, and even. you can get a ton of tones out of it. Not only by turning knobs but by right hand placement. Amazing!

If you don't mind me asking... What brand/gauge strings do you use?

    THanks

  • Thanks so much! I'm using D'Addario Prosteels. 130-100-80-65-45.Make sure they SUPER LONG SCALE or they won't fit the 35" scale of the 55-94!

  • I have the bass strung different...B & E strung thru the bridge and A,D & G Strung thru body.Seems to balance the strings more..just a thing I tried :-)

    I'm also tuned down a half step as well...all flats Bb,Eb,Ab,Db &Gb

  • Last thing :-) The B string is NOT tapered. They offer a tapered B but,as a special order seperate from the regular pack.

The model number for the Prosteels is EPS170-5SL

  • Wow! Thanks so much!

  • no problem my friend!!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • yo jcgroove I am a new player and I am having difficulty figuring out how you're playing this. any explanation you can give would be great help

  • Hey brother, how's everything? Sorry I didn't get my right hand on this clip. That's actually the amp's rack in the way! :-) I'm just playing octaves with my right hand alternatiing between my index and middle fingers. Not using any special techniques with the right hand! The key is to lock the time with the drummer.

It would definitely help if you relax your wrists, hands, etc to keep the groove.Just breath normally and try and play along with the clip if you can!

    Good luck!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • okay i understand, i think. my only other question, actually i have 2, is why you have to use both your middle fingers to play the octave. Also when you hit the open B string what octave are using with that. Is the "B"on the A string? Sorry for all the questions brother. I really want to get better and this is a challenge I want and need so I can get better

  • No problem bro...ask away!! :-)I use my index on the B string and middle finger on the octave to get a certain feel that you hear on the clip.I don't have a lot of chops so I try and make the song feel right when I play.

  • Nice groove and perfect sound on B string especially..

  • Thanks my friend!! Yeah man, that bass has one of the best B strings I've ever played!!!

  • Hey man, this is gotta be my most inspiring clip on the net. You have an awesome groove that is solid as a rock, not stopping for anything. I have watched this clip that many times that I went out and bought a 55-94 Deluxe for myself, lol. Would love to see more clips from you man, you are now one of my favorite bassist who I am aspiring to become like. God bless from Australia.

    Cheers, Dan

  • Dan,thanks for the comments brother!! I'm glad you were able to find a good bass like Lakland.I've used em for about 5-6 years now! I'm also playing Pavel basses.I have more clips at my myspace page.see the link on my main page!

    Peace,

    Jackie

  • i cant see your right hang technique for your octave notes. u using your thumb or your index and middle fingers on that part??

  • just standard playing, index and middle fingers...it's funny,I rarely play with my thumb! When I do,it's usually for muting.Oakland bass master Joel Smth taught me a lil thing he does with his index and thumb while muting with his palm...it's crazy!! Kinda like a guitar technique on bass.I can't do it as well as he does, but it's helped my feel on certain types of grooves!!

    Peace,

    JC

  • that looks scary man you wouldnt want to hit a duff note in that situation

  • Lakland's from Chicago, w00t.

  • It's stuff like this that makes me love the bass so much. Really appreciate you putting this on the net. It's so rare to get a perspective like this that isn't commercial video. Lakland and ebs, that's some very nice gear to not let down that killer groove. Awesome video. Jackie Clarks a name to look out for!

  • Hey Mark, thanks for the comment brother!! I really appreciate it from my bass family!! It's easy to lay down a groove when you have a drummer like Buddy Williams on the skins!!! haha! Check Buddy out with David Sanborn here on youtube...Buddy also got Marcus Miller a lot of gigs when he was a teenager!! Great player and friend!

    Peace,

    JC

  • and why can't i get my octaves to sound like that ?!

    if those are octaves ...

  • pure, elegant and immediately likable !

if it's possible, please, post more detail on how to get that sweet tone you have in this video. ;-)

    i tinker with a 55-02.

  • Thanks a lot for the comments! You are hearing the direct speaker sound of an EBS TD650 amp,2-4X10 EBS cabs side-by-side on the floor. The amp is set FLAT!bass settings:toggle switch set towards the bridge and my EQ is set Bass-2 o'clock Mids-dip switch set at 250Hz and set to 1 o'clock my treble is 1 or 2 o'clock. The rest is my hands I guess!I get complements on that bass and it is one of the best basses I've played!check out more of my clips at Myspace..type my name in search box

    Peace,

    jackie

  • Wassup Pstyle, how's everything? How well do you like the new Lakland pickups?

  • Whats up JC? This is your boy Jamareo, don't hurt em to bad on youtube. You're killin em everywhere now, I was gonna put a few clips up here until I saw your vid now. Lol. Keep Killin1

  • Whatever dude!! hahaha! Wassup man,you need to post some clips for real!!!

  • You must want everybody to laugh at me. Haha!! I had a clip of me playing around in the studio for Luther Barnes new project upcoming I was gonna put up here but I can't after hearing you.

  • Type in Joel Smith and check out his clip at NAMM...or were you standing there when he did it??

  • I was doing my Spector Bass Showcase with Quintin Berry while they were at the Booth. I saw him killing though, I didn't know Joel was off the chain like that. You gave him a run for his money though (Amsterdam Concert).

  • I try and find a tone that suits the situation...the 55-94 has a variety of tones as you know! :-) I do have a "main" setting which is toggle switch in "bridge position",bass boost at about 3,a slight bump of the mid control(dip switch set at 250hz to help the low register speak a lil better) and I adjust my treble according to taste or what I need at the moment.I usually get a pretty good sound from that starting point.

  • Pstyle, how's everything going bro? I have Barts in mine...I like em in my 55-94 cause they really record well and cut thru without being too thin in live settings.Of course it's all a matter of preference...I've heard the new pickups and I liked some basses and disliked othersOverall I really love Lakland basses!!! Go to my myspace page and check out my clips there.Look under my name to find the page.

  • thanks a lot for letting us peek in the world of the working professionals

  • Glad you enjoyed the clip..we had a great time in London...wish I'd recorded more of it because it was a really nice show! If you wanna check out more clips , take a look at myspace com/groove4life I have more professionally done clips there along with a few of my low-budget productions! hahaha!

    Take care,

    Jackie

  • very smooth style, like watching this, makes bass-playing look so easy ^^ 5/5
