They have since replaced the scheme with a set of mini roundabouts (traffic circles). Not sure they really needed to do this. I miss the empathy effect I used to get without lights or roundabouts. I would say it is slightly slower now with the roundabouts!

Empathy works! Every time I get stuck at traffic lights or grid locked roundabouts I think back with affection to that wonderful time where the lights were removed in Portishead and think why can't they do that at this junction I am at now!

I live in Portishead and experienced this. Let me tell you, it was a brilliant success. We all quickly got into this empathy mode and it made me feel good for the whole day! So rather than starting the day feeling grumpy after sitting in a jam for 15 minutes or so, just to get through about quarter of a mile of traffic light grid lock, I would get through it in about a minute or less and also get the feel good factor of letting several other drivers pass through before me! Brilliant! :-)

Exactly. It's easy to take away lights at a small, single lane intersection. Try taking them away from larger places and get you results like vietnam and india.

There are plenty of bad side-effects. In particular people need to keep very close to the car in front otherwise they open a gap and have to wait. People need to be much more aware every second they drive, waiting for a person or a car to jump out.

I've seen studies like this in the past. It's strange how every time another one comes up everyone is unaware of it. I remember watching a segment no DW-TV about this at least 3 years ago talking about the same thing, only on a road junction in the Netherlands, and people gave the same responses as in this video. Okay people let me try to put it like this to you and see if you understand it a little more. Is our society working at the moment? No! Why? Do a simple study of organisations like Common Purpose, Demos, Serco and the John Adams Street gang. where i live the traffic lights automaticly switch to give priority to the minor roads, seems to be a way to increase fuel tax revenue to me.

Im all for swithing off the lights! waste of money for both the tax payer and the car user queuing. they just need to give pedestrians the right of way, like in holland.

Also in some areas I know of locally traffic lights have actually bought down traffic congestion especially on roads amongst houses connecting to large dual carriageways. One I know of gets so clogged up with traffic tailbacks as no one on the dual carriageway will give way to let them out during peak. The traffic lights force this and allow for all angles to flow. So not everything is as clear cut as Common Purpose wanting to turn off lights whilst brainwashing you with mind reframing techs

Be aware although you might get through quicker than usual your chance of an accident will be far higher in spots where traffic lights are not needed. Common Purpose will be pushing information like this in areas where traffic lights are totally not needed. I know many areas where traffic lights have been added where they've never been needed. If one tested these areas with the lights off in the future they'll say look see you don't need traffic lights. Again watch the accidents soar.
