hi I have used all those commands dod dodshort etc to wipe off my hard drive and it seems like the virus is still there it erased windows and everything but when i try to install windows again, the virus is still in the computer, its so bad it keeps my computer go start and restart by it self. Any suggestions to wipe off my drive?
if you use the DoD 5220.22-m to completely wipe the hard drive will you then be able to re install windows on the computer using the original installation disks?

@Coneezy100 Yes it will work. Install DBAN to a disk. Put the disk in and turn off the computer. Turn it on and RIGHT when you hear the "ding", hold the option key until a little picture of a hd(s) and wait till a picture of a disk appears. Use the arrow keys to move to the disk and press enter. Then you basically follow this video. If you are just reinstalling it for yourself, go with the quick wipe (the 1 pass). hope this helps :D

@blackrack2008 you dont want to use wipe softwares on flashdrives arent a rewrite head (something like that) system like how a harddrive is so if you use it on your flashdrive you can harm the flash drive i suggest just melting it but i think it releases stuff in the ozone thats harmful so its a judgement call

I'm using the "autonuke" option on a 160GB HDD and its saying its going to take over 300 hours!!! I guess I don't mind the wait, but geez!!! Is three passes supposed to take that long? I have done this before with two other 160GB HDDs and they only took around 4 hours. Will 300+ hours of wiping destroy this HDD? Is there even a way to abort the wiping process?

What i do is do a quick run which takes a long time but not as long as the others. Then plug it into one of my comptuers that has a recovery software. I do this to make sure everything is gone. One of the recovery software's i use to have my peace of mind is Handy Recovery. There is more but i use that one more. This is one of the best tools anyone should have.
@dudeme12 No you cannot Format one partition. This tool is a compleat disk whipe. Any partitions will be deleted thats on the HD. But why would u want to do that? just use regualar format. Theres another live cd that can help you do that which is called gparted live cd. That should see your partitions and not take as long as this thing does. Or you can your your windows or mac formatting tools. This is if you are giong to resell and not be yours no more.
@dudeme12 gparted is a lot more safe then the method shown here. The method that is shown here would take the hard drive back to factory settings with no parition. if you use windows you can just right click on the partition and format. Or use the disk managment. But yes gparted is very safe to use if you need to just format partitions and usually takes min's not hours. Just load it look at the nice gui right click on the partition and format it to what you want fat32,ntfs and so on.

@ruggedrap81 When you use DBAN you basically run DBAN when your in your bios (motherboard) and it clears EVERY bit of information on your computer. so yes your harddrive will be obliterated and you will need to purchase windows again
@oldspice420 You really do not have to purchase a windows again. If you have the key and a bootable windows cd/dvd you should be able to install it just fine without repurchase.
@ruggedrap81 Well 1st off get you self a copy cd/dvd of your os has to be bootable. Then get magical jelly keyfinder to get your windows key. Or use the key on your sticker. Download this iso and burn it to cd using a iso burnner and make sure it says bootable. Burn it at low speeds its only 10mb, so it wont take long and that way it burns properly. Put it into the computer with cd/dvd to boot 1st in your bios. And the blue screen should pop up atuomatically if ud did things right.
Just a tip for all of you: Do not waste time on doing more than one pass wipes! Google it and you will see that it's useless and takes a lot more time than just one pass.
@TheTonyaabi CCleaner does have a disk wiper utility (Tools -> Drive Wiper) where you can wipe partitions or whole drives with either 1 pass, DoD 5220.22-M (3 pass), NSA (7 pass), or Gutmann. However, I have not had much luck with this. I've had a few times where it says it has wiped 2 terabytes in an hour or so, or just crashes. Not sure why you're saying no though.

i used a program called copywipe, which you boot from disk, it ran a single pass of zeros to the drive and fixed the issues. i was able to reinstall windows without any problems
I have an external hard drive that I want to completely zero-fill or random-fill so that I can reformat it with no previous data stored at all.
DBAN will "automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk it can detect." Does this mean that it will delete all the hard disks, including the one I'm working on (immediately after downloading the software)? Or will it have an interface that allows me to select the external drive and my current HDD will be safe?

@ChaosBakaZ Do you have a card reader installed on your PC? If you do either disconnect it or disable it and try again, I had this problem and disconnecting the card reader worked.

I always thought that just reinstalling your OS wiped it, so this will be my first time using a wiping program. 2 questions: How long would the 1 pass take on a 40g hard drive about halfway full? this method is more for clearing your whole harddrive, a harddrive keeps its data for about 3 wipes using your disc will work perfectly for the virus or download avg free works perfectly fine keep in mind though using ur cd to rebuild your computer is a last resort for a simple virus
For my computer I had to set bios to default settings then take the hard drive out and plug it into a usb port. I'm not sure what exactly I changed in the bios to get dban to work but the first boot drive had to be the dvd drive then and the 2nd one the hard drive. I then restarted and pressed f8 and selected the dvd drive. After dban loaded I typed in autonuke since I didn't want to screw anything up because I am going to sell the computer. It is a windows 7 64bit that I built.

Hi, I get to the stage where I have selected my method 'quick erase' and selected which drive to wipe. I then press f10 to start and it just goes on to a black screen saying operation start and finish times then ...done. But it hasn't actually done any thing????? :-/ Am I missing something here??
Does this work when right when you start your computer it says "windows could not start because the following file was missing or curropt window\system32\config\system.
Also it then tells me to try to fix it by pressing r it doesn't work.

4. learn to create a "Bootable CD-R" to burn the ISO image into the CD-R and run it before start up of your OS.
I want to erase everything from my pc,I mean everything, even the magnetic saved files that the goberment could find using their equipment. Wil this do the job????

I'm using the "autonuke" option on a 160GB HDD and its saying its going to take over 300 hours!!! I guess I don't mind the wait, but geez!!! Is three passes supposed to take that long? I have done this before with two other 160GB HDDs and they only took around 4 hours. Will 300+ hours of wiping destroy this HDD? Is there even a way to abort the wiping process?

What i do is do a quick run which takes a long time but not as long as the others. Then plug it into one of my comptuers that has a recovery software. I do this to make sure everything is gone. One of the recovery software's i use to have my peace of mind is Handy Recovery. There is more but i use that one more. This is one of the best tools anyone should have.

@dudeme12 No you cannot Format one partition. This tool is a compleat disk whipe. Any partitions will be deleted thats on the HD. But why would u want to do that? just use regualar format. Theres another live cd that can help you do that which is called gparted live cd. That should see your partitions and not take as long as this thing does. Or you can your your windows or mac formatting tools. This is if you are giong to resell and not be yours no more.

@dudeme12 gparted is a lot more safe then the method shown here. The method that is shown here would take the hard drive back to factory settings with no parition. if you use windows you can just right click on the partition and format. Or use the disk managment. But yes gparted is very safe to use if you need to just format partitions and usually takes min's not hours. Just load it look at the nice gui right click on the partition and format it to what you want fat32,ntfs and so on.

Im completly hopeless when it comes to computers, i dont even undersand how you got the blue screen up, please go into more detail, and i have no OS cd, so what happens if my OS gets deleted or fucked up? If somebody could slowly walk me through this IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

@ruggedrap81 When you use DBAN you basically run DBAN when your in your bios (motherboard) and it clears EVERY bit of information on your computer. so yes your harddrive will be obliterated and you will need to purchase windows again

@oldspice420 You really do not have to purchase a windows again. If you have the key and a bootable windows cd/dvd you should be able to install it just fine without repurchase.

@ruggedrap81 Well 1st off get you self a copy cd/dvd of your os has to be bootable. Then get magical jelly keyfinder to get your windows key. Or use the key on your sticker. Download this iso and burn it to cd using a iso burnner and make sure it says bootable. Burn it at low speeds its only 10mb, so it wont take long and that way it burns properly. Put it into the computer with cd/dvd to boot 1st in your bios. And the blue screen should pop up atuomatically if ud did things right.

Just a tip for all of you: Do not waste time on doing more than one pass wipes! Google it and you will see that it's useless and takes a lot more time than just one pass.

@TheTonyaabi CCleaner does have a disk wiper utility (Tools -> Drive Wiper) where you can wipe partitions or whole drives with either 1 pass, DoD 5220.22-M (3 pass), NSA (7 pass), or Gutmann. However, I have not had much luck with this. I've had a few times where it says it has wiped 2 terabytes in an hour or so, or just crashes. Not sure why you're saying no though.

@trafficjam10 DBAN is Linux based, but it is a self-contained boot disk that works with all PC operating systems.

@cop089 It deletes everything off the selected disks or partitions. If they contain your operating system, it has to be reinstalled from scratch.

i used a program called copywipe, which you boot from disk, it ran a single pass of zeros to the drive and fixed the issues. i was able to reinstall windows without any problems

I loaded the CD, works great however... It says [????] Unrecognized Device 4 times (where the disk and partitions should be)
and then there is a fifth one that says (this one I can wipe) ATA Disk (then a bunch of numbers and letters)
Can I just wipe ATA Disk to wipe everything?

I have an external hard drive that I want to completely zero-fill or random-fill so that I can reformat it with no previous data stored at all.
DBAN will "automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk it can detect." Does this mean that it will delete all the hard disks, including the one I'm working on (immediately after downloading the software)? Or will it have an interface that allows me to select the external drive and my current HDD will be safe?

@ChaosBakaZ Do you have a card reader installed on your PC? If you do either disconnect it or disable it and try again, I had this problem and disconnecting the card reader worked.

My sister's computer got a virus, so I'm going to wipe it. I always thought that just reinstalling your OS wiped it, so this will be my first time using a wiping program. 2 questions: How long would the 1 pass take on a 40g hard drive about halfway full? And after it's finished, I can just reinstall Windows and have it function normally right? I'm pretty tech savvy, but I don't know much about this topic. Thanks!

this method is more for clearing your whole harddrive, a harddrive keeps its data for about 3 wipes using your disc will work perfectly for the virus or download avg free works perfectly fine keep in mind though using ur cd to rebuild your computer is a last resort for a simple virus

For my computer I had to set bios to default settings then take the hard drive out and plug it into a usb port. I'm not sure what exactly I changed in the bios to get dban to work but the first boot drive had to be the dvd drive then and the 2nd one the hard drive. I then restarted and pressed f8 and selected the dvd drive. After dban loaded I typed in autonuke since I didn't want to screw anything up because I am going to sell the computer. It is a windows 7 64bit that I built.

Im trying to get rid of viruses in my PC and I really don't care if loose ALL my personal data and files because I have everything stored in an "external memory" device. Will running a "destructive recovery" take my computer to a "new", "just unpacked" state??. I really dont want to run "dban" and trash my hard drive because then I ll have to purchase a new comp. Please help! Need advise.

Hi, I get to the stage where I have selected my method 'quick erase' and selected which drive to wipe. I then press f10 to start and it just goes on to a black screen saying operation start and finish times then ...done. But it hasn't actually done any thing????? :-/ Am I missing something here??

Does this work when right when you start your computer it says "windows could not start because the following file was missing or curropt window\system32\config\system.
Also it then tells me to try to fix it by pressing r it doesn't work.

1. it will totally erase all your shit with one or two passes. it can be found but only with a really knowledgeable person and good equip (at under 8 scans)
2. you will have to reinstall an OS.
because this erases EVERYTHING on your hard drive.
3. it will destroy all viruses, at the cost of the rest of you info. viruses are not physical so yes, it will get fucked up.
4. learn to create a "Bootable CD-R" to burn the ISO image into the CD-R and run it before start up of your OS.
