As a child of the 1950s, I naturally was present for the birth of rock'n'roll. But my mother was a chamber and lieder junkie, so I got the full treatment, bless her heart. Schiotz took up permanent residence in my inner ear with Every Valley Shall Be Exalted from Handel's Messiah for HMV-UK/Angel-US. Since I was at Lutheran parochial school this
got to me, fast. This version remains the world-class gold standard of this one. It's on Youtube *here*:
My treasured Seraphim LP of Schiotz singing Nielsen is locked in storage 1000 miles away. If someone wants to make me cry, they should post a couple of those.
Er leuchtet aus seinem Innern: Herzlichen Dank für die Einbringung des großen Dänen, der sich trotz des deutschen Unheils über Dänemark wieder dem deutschen Lied zugewandt hat.
You have finally posted a singer who does not thrill me -- for this you receive clemency. You are even pardoned for your DFD comment -- after all, one can not be overrated without having a great reputation to begin with.
Well he alternated with Pears in The Rape of Lucrezia. I don't know exactly what he and Ferrier sang more. But they became friends! Schiotz couldn't embark on an international career till after the war. (although in Denmark he had become a sort of National Treasure. Symbolizing the resistance against nazi occupation!) In 1945 he recorded Die schöne Müllerin and Dichterliebe with Gerald Moore. Please listen to Every Valley (Handel) here on YouTube. Best Handel-recording ever? (the old 78 rpm.)
I think clemency is needed for criticizing Fischer-Dieskau's lieder singing. I agree with the majority of listeners that Fischer-Dieskau is the preeminent male singer of German lied (Schwarzkopf and Gerhardt are the best female lieder singers IMO). Regarding Fischer-Dieskau's opera performances, he is more vulnerable to criticism; but even here, he often points the way with respect to phrasing and interpretation. And his voice is quite beautiful tonally and has an excellent technique.
My favourite tenor! (if he hadn't had that brain tumor in the 40-ies he would probably have risen to greatest fame.) Did you know that he sang with Britten, Ferrier and Pears? (before the tumor struck.)
Hi. What did Schiotz sing with Britten, Ferrier and Pears? After hearing him for the first time here, he certainly belongs in that company, or may even surpass them!

If not among the 100 greatest, then close.
Unfortunately - with resistance and all - his performance in Emil Reesens "Farinelli" is not well known, neither is Reesen, as it is in danish.
"Herren som skabte alt på jord, skabte vel også dette bord..." very danish
"Den som har livets mildhed kendt..."

beautiful sound and one of my favorite of Schubert's pieces.

With better luck, Schiotz may have been as great as Bjoerling. Actually, his voice resembles the voice of the great Swede with a tinge of darkness.

Para mi gusto personal la interpretacion de " La Bella Molinera" que mas me ha agradado es la grabacion que hizo Josef Protschka (Capriccio, 1986).

You have my clemency! He was a fantastc artist. Due to WWII and disease he never reached his full International potential.

Yes, less artifice and a better basic voice that FD. No clemency needed.

If you have not heard him, I recommend listening to some of Ian Bostridge's lieder recordings. IMHO the finest lieder singer since Fisher-Dieskau

McCormack has also a place here.
