As you can see by the date, I'm behind in my viewings. Just can't keep up with everyone.
____________
As of now, no real rhyme or reason. My collection is still smaller than most, so no real reason to divide them up.
Another thought is - like you say...a bit of OCDisorder runs thru the community - when it comes to James Bond, say, alpha order goes out the window. And box sets. And if you have movies based on John LeCarre novels, do you bunch them?
Hey Tom, how are you? Happy New Year! How were your holidays?
You have them all intermingled? Interesting, I think you're the only one I've heard from or known who has different formats mixed together. I'm a bit ocd with stuff so I don't think I could do that but it is interesting to see how people do things differently.
@Absolutesublime1 Doin ok, holidays were just fine. Happy they are over though. You?
We pretty much watch all the movies on one TV which has all the players attached to it so they all go to the same place when they come of the bookshelf. I have them stacked in such a way that the dimensions of the respective cases don't cause any issues. To me it's just easier to find the movie I want quickly by name than trying to remember what format it's in first. Good question to ask Jay!
I go by alphabetically because my collection is big so it makes things difficult to find otherwise, however genre is my preferred way. I divide into subgenres. So, Horror would be Slasher | Thriller | Zombie (which will include things like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland) | Monster (vampires, Jaws, etc) | Classic | Foreign. Zombies get a separate section from monster because they're my favourite. Also when it comes to sci-fi/horror movies, if it takes place in a spaceship I put it in Sci-Fi.
happy new year n happy holidays..n ya i mostly have mine organize to genre..but some are actors n director..i really need shevles 2..ill get dem soon..cool video
Happy New Year!! I don't have blu-ray but all my DVDs are alphabetical. Series & box sets separately not alphabetical. Let us see how it looks when your done :)
i do not really have a lot of space to put all my dvds into groups i have tv shows with tv shows and i disney movies with disney movies and disney movies i have ones i do not watch much are together but i do not have that may dvds but i have been getting more
I have mine like so at the moment. Horror (top shelves away from the kids), family (all disney, christmas movies beside each other then the rest) 80s (I have a LOT of 80s as it's my fave. So all movies and tv from the 80s have their own section. Then I have Trek and TV Shows (I have more than a few of those :P), I have all blu on their own. Also all steels/digi/slipcase and big boxsets. It gets a bit hard to do them alphabetical after about 3800 odd lol. Arnie! and Music!. Also Doctor Who/Elvis!
Right now all of my stuff is alphabetical, and my DVDs are separate from my Blu-rays. When I have a larger space I'll sort them into more sections the way you are.
I really need some shelves as well. My collection is pretty much everywhere! lol. I just do not have the space to put up huge shelves. Most of them are in large rubber containers. Horror is my favorite genre also. Have a great one bro!
my dream is to create a hard core horror collection... right now i just have random stuff a few nice collectables... but I can't wait to see how you set it up i am sure it will look Sweet! for me i would just have a bookcase and organize them by theme like all nightmare on elm street together and italian horror together something like that :)

Happy New Year mate. I dont collect Blu Ray, so i dont have any in my collection. But my collection is as follows : French stuff, Scandiavia, Spain, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, New Zealand, Australia, UK and then USA ... i put a specific nationality as one ...
oh to the question i jsut have steelbooks and metal slipcases like 9 only just getting started so i have options on looking should go to ikea has cool storage solution of all kinds and a question slash favor if you know anyone with an extra independence day iron pack help me out it would be much appreciated happy new year
DVDs & blu-rays separately, and then tv boxets and film boxsets, animated films and steelbooks. The majority are alphabetical, organising into genres just wouldn't work for me.
I do have my horror films separate. Most of my collection is VHS and Betamax however.
I do have them split up by distributor, for instance Paragon tapes together Unicorn Video tapes together, Gorgon releases together. My big box VHS are separate from the traditional sized slipcases as well, then by company. Happy new year Jay
I have over 1350 blurays so I put them in alphabetical order otherwise I would never find anything! If I had to seperate a genre, I would put TV shows seperate. Happy New Year buddy and thanks for all the great videos in 2011 :-)
Most are alphabetical, disney, tv shows, box sets, steelbooks etc are by themselves. All movies are also entered in dvd profiler, so I know what I have lol
I have my DVD's & Blu-Rays separate from one another. Then I put them in alphabetical order. I have a seperate section for Blu-Ray digibooks and a separate section for my TV series.
a thru z action drama horror special interest have some on shelves the rest on the floor stacked need more bookcases only collect dvds cause that's what i have don't want to change to blu ray if they stop i stop buying until they make a machine to copy to the highest format from the info of dvds don't have the money and time to keep changing formats
I have over 2,000 dvds but I just put them in alphabetical order. I have huge bookcases, have ton of shelves for them etc....I just put them in A-Z. I love Horror and that's my main films.
@Absolutesublime1 There was a movie I saw alongtime ago where I saw people vomiting some red goo and then they die, im not sure if its a horror movie or series, it was creepy though, does it rings any bells?
I tend to to order mine by labels. For example criterion or bfi. The rest I order by spine. For example, if I have several releases with white spines and red lettering I will put them together and brown spines with yellow lettering ets. It creates nice blocks of colour which is a good memorising technique. It works surprisingly well and looks good.
I have my own ordering system that makes no sense to anyone but myself. I tried to keep like anime seperate and horror seperate and all the superhero movies together still but then I buy one or two new movies and that system goes all to hell when I run out of space on the shelf. I still do try to keep stuff like TV series and superhero movies together but now I just put most things wherever I want. Somtimes giving my favorite movies the prime shelf space closest to me.
mine was alphabetical since the beginning. however, i changed it to organizing by genre. its easier and better once i start to fill up shelves. i dont have to move dvds around to match the order
I seperate em first into Horror, and Other (comedy, action) Since i have like 150 horror, and 30 other, I just do Horror in alphabetical. The rest i do into cartoons, then live action films. :D Happy New year Bruh :D You've got a HUGE collection so if i were you i'd do genre, and THEN alphabetical.
I have my DVD's and Blu-Rays separate from one another and in alphabetical order. Exceptions are sequels. For example, Jewel of the Nile is filed under "R" after Romancing the Stone. All my James Bond movies are filed under "J" and etc.
i rearrange them by genre but sometimes i try director although it will be a bit hectic as in less than a week i have got 35 blu-rays so i have a lot to watch
I do try to keep all my horror movies seperate from the rest of the movies and i keep all my Blu Rays in a seperate stack as well. Unfortanatly i dont have enough room to put them on shelves so i have a lot of them stacked on the floor lol. The stacks get bigger every week it seems like lol
I keep all mine in alphabetical order, its much easier to find one, when your in the mood to watch it!!..I would definately keep my dvd's and blu rays seperate!!..I also keep my special editions and steelbooks on the top shelf ;)
Generally I stick to the normal genre organisation type but I like to split my DVDs up depending on the country that it came from. Japan, France, etc. are all split up. I like it :D
i put them in alphabetical order but is split between Standard and Boxsets/Digibooks also my collection is inside my automin, but im running out of room!
Alphabetically. I had them by genre for a while but I found it so damn hard to categorize some movies. For example-- Sweeney Todd: Horror, Musical, or Drama? All three If ya ask me!
My collection is not very well organized. I have very little space so I put them where I can. I have a few DVD racks, but I also find myself having to pile them on tables and such.
I keep all the DVDs separate from the blu-rays and I put them in order of genre. I also keep all steelbooks and the box sets separate. Happy New Year!
First I separate blu-ray from my DVD with a couple exceptions (I keep TV seasons with some on DVD and some on blu-ray together as well as Criterions). Then I separate my blu-rays from those my wife and kids like. I further keep a section for family where we might all like to watch them. I keep superhero movies separate from other action or sci-fi titles. I also have an area fr steelbooks regardless of genre. Same thing with movies on my short list to watch that I haven't seen yet..
Hey yeah, I separate all my horror too! As for bluerays I do the same although I don't have too many of those. And the rest are all mixed up, really. Although I do like to put seasons, tv shows in order (easier to find!)
Alphabetical with Slip Covers, then Non-Slips. Digibooks seperated along with Steelbooks. Boxed sets together as well and then Big Collectors sets where I can fit them.. usually top!
here is how I do it (all alphabetical): bluray (regular cases), bluray (odd casing; example: taxi driver, close encounters, inception best buy exclusive), blu ray with slip covers, pre-viewed bluray (the ones from blockbuster in those dvd cases), digibooks, movies released by the criterion collection.
dvd: kids movies, tv shows, anime, horror, everything else. Steelbooks on display.
i organize my collection by genre. While it can be hard with some movies, Ive found this an easy and effective way to display them as well. Also when i want to watch a movie, its easier to pick one out depending on what genre. Its like my own private FYE store. I love it.

Hey, Jay. The way I organize my films is simple. My entire collection is broken up into sections.
The first section contains all of my Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror films in ABC order.
Next, is the "Everything Else" section, also in ABC order, which contains films from every genre, EXCEPT for Criterions, Classics, and Animation.
Classics and Criterions have their own section.
And Animation does too, both TV and Film.
Box sets go atop the shelves.
DVD and BluRays are kept apart in each section.
