I really cannot accept that people don't reach this stage in normal development. I don't get what makes it so special. Can anybody help me understand?
I do not think nor recall in pictures. No longer have that part of my brain and what is left of the right hemisphere is heavily damaged. I need written word instead of these videos to bring your message to me.
It looks like the pre-operational children can only recognize the -immediate- consequences of the proposed situation. Both the adolescent, formal operational child and the pre-operational child recognized that, hypothetically, it could be possible for a race of thumbless people to exist, but only the post-operational child immediately gave an answer that showed how deeply he thought about it. If you asked the pre-op children ,"What else might be different?"

They might've eventually realized that, if we had no thumbs,"thumb wars" wouldn't have ever been invented, people would have created another version of "thumbs up", and we'd have a different kind of writing utensil other than the pencil.
When my psychology professor mentioned that only about half of our population ever manages to reach the formal operational stage, a lightbulb immediately popped up over my head.
So half our population is stuck in concrete operational stage and can't think abstractly? This almost completely explains Fox News!
well see if we woke up tomorrow without thumbs it would be much different to if we never had thumbs in the first place because we wouldnt know the difference. thats what i wouldve said.
@TheRobineggs thats like so many things if we woke up tomarrow and they said there where now 6 mouths we would have a lot of change but if we grow up with it and it was alwas like that than we would see no change
most high school kids wouldn't have put nearly the effort into answering that question. Many adults choose to remain in the operational stage/ pre-formal operational stage because they can get through life like that and deep thinking can lead to inner crisis and uncertainty.
They should have asked a dumbass high schooler... That kid was a minority. :/ Just because one smart kid said some stuff in high school doesn't mean jack shit for the rest of the age group.

Both the sets of kids were formal-operational.

He made a shitty point of connecting the righty's story to the concept of missing thumbs.
And anyway, most high school kids would have probably said most of the the things that the younger kids said. That was B.S.
