According to Tomm Moore, "The main stylistic influences outside of medieval art that we referenced were Genndy Tartakovsky's "Samurai Jack" (2001), which uses so many international filmic and art influences so well."

So my hunch was right :)

I loved the animation, but I tought the story became weak at the end of the movie. Which is a bummer, since the animation is so lovely. I enjoyed all those colors, shapes, patterns soooo much!

Fantastic animation!Clean,refined shapes and amazing backgrounds with infinite harmonizing hues.They beautifully flicker on the surface and let the imagination subtly flow.Clean forms of characters remind me of the great Samurai Jack in some way.Such a beautiful thing.A true artistic masterpiece.

I thoroughly enjoyed this animation on crtic.co.cc. the animation was very gripping and suspenseful. This is not to say that it was a perfect animation, but it was very good in general. Definitely should see it if you're into action, but not gory, animations.

The only difference between it and Samurai Jack is that this has outlines.

The big thing with Jack was that none of the characters had outlines around their drawings.

I just watched this movie with my kids. I like Pixar and the other animated/CG films very much but if Pixar is Warhol, this film company is Picasso. Easily the most artful film I've seen in a very long time.

For some reason when I saw this I thought of the opening scene of Kung Fu Panda. I saw that scene and was so excited that someone had actually done a mainstream animated film with some unique visual style. Then Jack Black woke up from his dream and the rest of the movie was just same old 3D and I was hugely disappointed.

My point is, the animation in this looks incredible and I agree with everyone here talking about how they wish there was more interesting visual styles in modern animation.

To be fair, the switch to 3-D animation was partly just due to its cost-effectiveness... but you can still save money by doing 2D animation like this on the computer.

Also, when animation companies saw how well Pixar was doing, they -assumed- it was -because- Pixar's movies were 3D that made them popular; they didn't take into consideration the fact that their own 2D movies were unpopular because the -stories- were crappy and uninspired.
