One night when i was 16 in 1989, i was on a bad acid trip. my friend and i were driving a Renault 5, well my friend was driving and i was on the passenger seat.
Frankenstein was playing on the radio from my N.Y.D. tape. Then the devil was talking to me and on the other-side i could ear god talking to me... I thought i was going to die that night. The music was telling me to not worry and everything would be ok... It was the scariest night of my life. But this song still my best song of all
i do not know why this song captivates me so. it's, at the core, just Johansen rambling on. But God, it's so fucking powerful. Thank you New York Dolls.
the only other people i can think of who were as influential as that dude are Jesus Christ and the Beatles, but this due Jhonny Thunders , ranks with Jesus as far as mysticism and and misunderstanding...and the devil had definitly captured his soul....F'N mind blowing if you start breaking all this stuff down....
my mind was blown...when i finaly put it togeather....punk..the term...the attitude....everything about it...was and is Johnny Thunders...the mean tough little punk who really dident give a fuck.....in other words, everybody i have ever known, directly or indirectly wanted to be like johnny thunders......its insane......
This is one of the shows where they used a stand-in bass player, due to Arthur's girlfriend, Connie, who had stradled him in his sleep, had sliced the tendon in his thumb with a knife. You can see Arther Kane sitting onstage back by Jerry Nolan. I don't really remember the reason for this, but that's him back there. There are some vids and pix out there with him in a small cast after the incedent.
@maxbignus04 - She was strung out and didn't want him to go on tour with out her. She thought he'd get better drugs and cheat on her. so she tried to cut his thumb off.
Does anyone think this song bears a striking structural similarity to The Smiths "Stop Me If You Think You've Hear This One Before"? Compare the chug-a-lug intro and its chord sequence, the chord progressions in general and esp. the lead guitar riff at the end of each section. Also in consideration of the fact Morrissey was head of the Dolls UK fan club.
@duprie37 Morrissey didn't wrote the music, but indeed, he could have said to Marr: ''Could you write something that's based on this?'' Marr was a great NYD-fan too, by the way. In the end, Panic was based on T. Rex' Metal Guru, and I have the idea Jeane was based on Private World.
Mine too. There's just something about it that is so hair standing. It's a great representation of the music back then. Dark, raw and somehow a bit tragic (due to all the untimely deaths)
Arthur Kane standing miserable in the back with the cast. His crazy girlfriend Connie tried to cut his fingers off. A rhodie filling in for him on bass.
This was the true anthem of my generation. I wish the re-formed Dolls would put it back into their set. This and Vietnamese Baby--among the Doll's greatest songs.
Thank god they had "New York" in front of "Dolls"!!!! Pure N.Y.C. punk scene! The 70's was the best decade for bankrupt New York City! There was so much art and music and some great movies shot in the city.
Sometimes David's "Frank-En-Stein!" sound like he's shouting "Make It Stop"!
I saw him as Buster Pointdexter at the old Ritz, and Sam Kinison opened for him.
this must have been after killer kane's crazy girlfriend cut off a piece of his thumb

It's my fave Dolls tune too-probably their most underrated song. They didn't seem to do it live very much.
