Banks when he was at his best and at Leicester City, unfortunately for Gordon his understudy was Peter Shilton who would soon take the number one shirt from him at Leicester.
It is a shame that Leicester did not acknowledge him as much as Stoke did when he went on to join them at a later date and erect a statue.
@kossofyou I think thats why this save is considered the best of all time. Its a very symbolic moment of an outstanding match (really breath taking, tense, technically almost perfect) between the 2 best teams in that world cup. But truth be said, i think it's not the best save ever.
nice save but what's the big deal? Zoff in my opinion made an even more spectacular safe against Brazil to put Italy in the semifinal not like this game in which did not mean all that much since both teams went on to qualify anyway and England still lost.
appeiciating that this is against Brazil, and things happen fast against Brazil, to be that concentrated, that aware, and havin the physical abiltity to move into position, and then push your body that low and have the mentaly awareness and focus combined with a physical strenghth to push the ball that high, in that space of time...... this is the greatest save ever!!
@conansound You have to put it into context: Arguably the 2 best international teams of the day; in the World Cup; the greatest player in history (in many ppl's opinions) making an extremely powerful and accurate downward header, the sort he rarely missed and more difficult to save than a high shot/header. Yes, Banks followed the cross because he was a good 'keeper and was trained to do that, but THE BALL WAS PAST HIM and he still reached back and saved it, pulling it OVER THE BAR. Pretty good!!
Everything about this is beautiful. The pass to Jairzinho from midfield, his dribble to the dead ball line, his cross, then look how Pele climbs into the air and delivers the perfect header. Then the save, it's just unbelievably good. how does he travel that far, that fast, to get down to the ball? How does he lift it over the bar to safety? Incredible.
It was a very good save, but..no offense to the guy but it didnt seem THAT great, yes the ball bounced and he managed to push it away but i've seen better :\
@0megakill ok so name better? u know how hard is whe the ball bounces and he was at the other side of the post...and the way he took the ball out put it to the corner thats hader
@knockerqk When Pele heads the ball, Banks is more than half way across the goal following the cross. When the ball bounces after the header, Banks is 2 feet away fron his right hand post, the side he saved. I can't believe people think this is the greatest save ever. People have this false idea he was at his left post when the ball bounced, look at it in slo-mo and you'll see he was over half way across when Pele headed and nearly at the post when it bounced.
Greatest save ever if you consider the degree of difficulty and the rarefied atmosphere of Mexico. Bobby Moore's reaction is he can hardly believe what he's seen.
Great save, the power and strength it took not just to get a hand on the ball, but to actually lift it over the bar, I know sometimes people get too nostalgic about some things in football, but that was probably the greateast I've seen.
THE BEST, SIMPLY THE BEST
