yet, another awesome post. can you cover terms like 'kedo' and 'demo', as they seem to be very similar in converstion, would I be right in thinking it's like, 'but' and 'however'?
I often hear japanese people ending their sentences with KEDO.I always thought that KEDO was another way of saying KEREDEMO or DEMO,which is english for BUT.Can you tell me why they end with this word if nothing comes after?

@oborogin Could I say this also: あなたがそれをするなら。私もそれをします。? If you do it, then I will do it too!

Do you always use plain forms and drop the desu for words in the middle of the sentence?
So, do I never say:
moshi anata ga tori desu nara, tobimasu koto ga dekimasu.
Or:
moshi nedan ga taku nai desu nara, watashi wa sore o kaimasu.
Or:
moshi anata ga nihon ni ikimasu nara, watashi mo ikimasu.

Moshi Anata ga Nihon e ikanai nara, Watashi wa Zettaini Nihon e ikimasen.

Kedo means...."though" in English
So. KEREDEMO is polite form of "Kedo"
"Demo" is But.
So, if you say "Kedo" in the end of positive sentence, after it, negative sentence is hiding.

Hello! Thank you so much for this "lesson".
It was really helpful. But I've got a question:
Can "nara" replace the main verb of a sentence?
Because I noticed that when you said "Moshi anata ga nihon ni iku nara", the main verb, the verb "to go" (iku) is still there.
But when you said "Moshi anata ga tori nara" or "moshi nedan ga takai nara" the main verb of both (to be) wasn't there.
I hope you can understand my question and I hope you can explain me.
Thank you.
GoncaloMartins1 2 years ago
You can not replace verb...
"Moshi anata ga tori nara" or "moshi nedan ga takai nara" does not have actual verb.
If you place verb into it..=>"Moshi anata ga tori ni naru nara" "moshi nedan ga takaku naru nara"
Anyway, to be = Naru ..so you need to add as it is.
Always, when you use verb in "Moshi~Nara" sentences, you need to place verb.
I hope this will be help.

Could you also say, moshi tori nara, tobemasu. ? Thanks for the lesson ^_^
FadedHonesty1 3 years ago
Yes you can say...
When you see who is the subject, you can erase it in the conversation. But, once in a while, you need to say subject for conforming.
"Moshi" is as well. But, You can not erase "Nara".
In a way, it might be said "If" is more of "Nara" in a meaning wise.
