I love the part at 3:40. She's intense throughout the whole piece in different ways, but there, she has such a huge contrast in volume; the intensity is nearly tangible. It's really striking, and I can't make the goosebumps go away! This is a wonderful performance.
Japanese female singers can be deceiving ... At first I thought her voice is just high pitch & small but then it gets big, still high, & solid.. OMG! XD I love it!
"Ai shite iru demo hitori sa" She was full of love yet had no lover in her last days. She was so full of love that it didn't matter if it was directed to her mother, her sister, her fans...affection flowed out of her like pure water from a deep mountain spring. She lived as an exemplar of love yet never partnered up for long with any one man. I believe she truly loved her fans. That innocence that made her so sensual also stopped her asking, "What's in it for me" - she was a treasure. Greg G.
3 octaves during this song! It's not only professional work ,she wanted be perfect to her public. Last picture of this video shows her so deep concentration ; only applauses of public rise again her smile...So moving Minako san ! Goddess beyond this world.
If you knew the lyric to the song and what she is ACTUALLY saying... no one can say that she isnt putting emotion to it... or that she doesnt fit the role.. people have gotten goosebumps and she fits the role perfectly.. im near tears
Minako's fans love her for who she was. She embodied sweetness, sensuality and a love of life. She sings here of being alone but she was comforted by her mother and sister in her last days. Interestingly, not by a lover. She put herself, including her sensuality and her love, into her singing. We admire her not for technique but for embodying a goodness that did not exclude sexuality. She still calls to us from Amida Buddha's Pure Realm. She will teach us the mystery if we listen. Greg G.
But it's like you're saying it as a fact which is NOT. If you're gonna be honest about it, don't say it in such a rude way. Asians can sing with feeling.
I love Minako, but IMO her performance here is not really that good. She performs it more like a pop song rather than a song from a musical. There are many more better performances of this song in Japanese here on YouTube.
Honesty isn't a crime. Nor is voicing your opinion. That said, I don't think you were justified in judging all Asians off of her performance. Furthermore, and I assume you don't speak Japanese when I say this, but you can't understand what she's saying. Therefore, you can't really say she doesn't bring any feeling to it. There might be a wealth of emotion in the emphasis of certain words that you, as a non-speaker, would be blind to.
Japanese is one of my favorite languages to hear sung. Toward the end of this piece, I can really feel the emotion coming from Honda-san...AISHITERU....she's saying she loves Marius and she's so sad...
Did you not consider that perhaps Minako Honda-san interpreted the song differently and thus performs it (in a concert no less) differently? Sure it may sound odd to you, but that's no reason to generalize ALL Asians to the same category, and justifying your opinion using a logical fallacy.
I prefer Ruffelle's portrayal of Eponine as her voice is strong, but fragile, just like the character. I just feel that it is better suited for the role.
Salonga was a great fit for Eponine when she first took on the role, but as she has matured as a singer/actor, I believe her voice became too powerful for the role. She is much better suited for the role of Fantine now.
