@moarscooby have to understand that Ian's voice has many different inflections depending on the song he is singing, but i do agree he is forcing it a bit in this one.
@cosmicharlie1970 . He most certainly did not, I know he's getting on a bit now, but he's not that old! I would guess that jesbeard has probably got it about right, and there are definitely better Tull songs than this. If you like their folkier aspect, I'd start with Mother Goose, and take it from there. Was lucky enough to see them do the Aqualung tour at Sheperd's Bush Empire a couple of years ago. Voice waning, true, but what a gig
definitely Martin, he started to play this style on Crest on Knave, there is an anecdote, that MK actually went to Hammer guitars and requested guitar with Martin´s sound after listening to the album.
i love tull= this sux

Well Jethro Tull was a 17th century agronomist...

first time i have heard this version, Ian's voice is a good fit for this old folk song, as he wrote many a folksy song himself

I did not know JT had ever done this!
This is wonderful -- thank u so much for sharing it here!

The story is old but the song is traffic's own and Tull is showing respect and love for the song by Ian's own version

Live on John Barleycorn

Maybe it's me, but Barre's guitar work in the beginning sure sounds like Mark Knopfler. Not that I'm complaining.

@MarkWilliamAdams I totaly agree-- i made the same comment to the person who sent me the link to this. But I think the guitarist is Martin Barre.

@MarkWilliamAdams Doesn't it though.

Ian Anderson did not write John Barleycorn. Its a very old Song. And Traffic's version is a very fine version.

I think this version of the song is different enough from Traffic's to stand on its own. They're both excellent.

oh dear
Much as I'm at Tull fan, check out Traffic's version
davidmbutcher14 11 months ago
@davidmbutcher14 Didn't Ian Anderson write this song? So Traffic covering a Jethro Tull song is pretty good, huh?
cosmicharlie1970 10 months ago
@cosmicharlie1970 No. It is an old English folk song which is more than 200 years old.
jesbeard 10 months ago
@jesbeard Try 400 years or more :P Wikipedia says a version of it appeared in the Bannatyne Manuscript of 1568, so it's even older than that.

Either Mark Knopfler is playing guitar on this or it's someone else (Martin Barre?) doing a nice imitation of his style...

@tcoudi Always liked Martin's guitar playing (whatever style he chose to play). He's certainly one of the more underrated guitarists in rock history.

@zoznack
agree,virtually unknown to larger public, some of his works are true worldclass.

I have this album and fell in love with this song. I wish there was video of their performance.
