LOL to the people who don't think she is playing i had to do this song for a classical guitar evaluation at my school. I practiced that song for months i know the fingering like the back of my hand she is hitting ever note spot on.
I think everyone needs to stop scrutinizing the most minute details of this 12 year old girl playing a very complicated song, beatufiully. Just listen to this music and enjoy it.
though potentially overdubbed, there is no doubt in my mind that this girl knows how to play this song. So those arguing on whether or not it is overdubbed, I hope your intentions are to highlight that she covered up potential mistakes and/or overdubbed parts to polish her performance of the song, not to disprove her ability to play the song. Because let me tell you...I'm sure as shit that she knows how to play it.
@guitarvalvo ... yeah right, you wish! Have you seen any of her other videos? She most certainly did not overdub this. Thats ridiculous.... BTW, How guitarists does it take to screw in a light bulb? .... wait for it.... 12! One to actually do it and the other 11 to say how they would have done it better!! ba-dum-ching...
@robdrewupei the #6 string is tuned down to D. she is supposed to play an E (fret 2) and she clearly doesn't, and therefore overdubbed it. Don't get me wrong, I think she's amazing. Recording is very difficult and some overdubbing is expected. don't take it so personal.
@robdrewupei i laughed at your joke, seems like you've dealt with a lot of guitarists! hahaha. anyways, the video is not overdubbed. i was trained classically for two years and worked with this piece a lot because i always loved listening to the LAGQ cd's so much. cheers.
Look at her right hand moving up and down to get different tone from the guitar, the tone matched exactly with her right hand movement. I've no doubt this is a live recording video.
yes it appears to be fake or overdubbed. the 6th string is tuned to D all song. From 2:16 to 2:22 the open 6th string is suddenly an E and some seconds later a D again.... i don't know if the whole video is fake or overdubbed but that part is for sure.
@Odednavon no i think she hits the 6th twice then the 5th i believe this is the real thing, also i believe she is using a slight delay,to hold the note longer
Imagine if a classical guitarist of such renown and ability would consider the idea. If she would be found out her reputation would be ruined and her career over...think for a minute
The notes are beautiful, but so are the silent pauses that the notes come from. Thank you for your hours and hours of practicing that give us this 4 minutes of joy.

This is a great example of a piece that would benefit from being played by 2 guitars... Even Li Jie - who is one of the greatest - has to make compromises in the fast part with the ostinato and sustaining chords playing at the same time. John Williams said the same thing about Cavatina. Even though he plays it beautifully, he admits there are compromises when you're not fully devoted to one part (melody/accompaniment) only
Dubbed or not-dubbed?? Just listen to the audio, this is no doubt excellent guitar playing at the highest level. I agee with ProtoCosmos: She played what is heard here.
@mwdbwm at 2:17 she is not playing what is being heard. she hits the low D string but you hear an E and then at 2:21 when she hits it again you hear a D
Li Jie, Your performance is flawless and beautiful. so balanced and controled yet expressive and colorful. You may have the biggest hands i have ever heard
Ahaha, I studied with David Adele for a year. He performed this at a recital at the end of the semester.. though that performance didn't come close to this in terms of technique
If you've ever seen Julian Bream's great documentary "Guitarra! A Musical Journey Through Spain" (and you should, BTW!) he does the same thing, and for the same reason - to get great sound quality AND a video with no microphones in the way.
She is DEFINITELY "guitar-syncing" - playing for the camera over previously recorded audio. The glitch at 2:17 proves that beyond a shadow of a doubt... she CLEARLY plucks an open low D string, but we clearly hear an E.
However, I have no doubt that the audio is really her playing - other than that one mistake, she syncs to the recording almost perfectly. I'm sure it was done for sound quality - to get her guitar to sound that good live, there would be mics in front of her blocking the view.
So at 2:17, A E are the correct notes for the song, not A D. I am a fan of Li Jie too but I think this is important, because if she indeed plucks D and sound E, we are not sure she's the one played on the audio recording, and she has many postings on YT. I see no reason why she had to do it twice, first did the audio perfectly then in front of the camera, why not just did the audio in front of the camera.
An open D 6th string is also played at 2:22 to compare it the E sounding open 6th string at 2:17. She's playing over an already recorded version no doubt by her, thats why she does it so well except she had a little slip and forgot to play the 2nd fret 6th string at 2:17. She obviously played it that way on the audio recording thats why its an E. I dont consider this a big deal at all and for my money still consider her on of the best classical guitarist.
This is live studio performance, no editing or sync playing or dubbing. She appeared in many Prof. Chen Zhis masterclasses in the same studio with live demonstrations, including Sunburst, with same sound quality.
"This is live studio performance, no editing or sync playing or dubbing."
Then how do you explain her 'D tuned' string suddenly becoming an 'E' for a second , then magically becoming a 'D' again? I'm not trying to be a wise guy .... I really want to know why or how that is. Thanks
Yes... at 2:17 her open 6th string (bass) produces an 'E' .... seconds later, the same open string is 'D'. But you know what? I don't even care anymore. It's a beautiful piece and I have no reason to doubt that she played what is heard here. I think this is dubbed though. Either way,Li Jie has beautiful technique and I have respect for her musicianship. I don't think anyone would want to hear me play this.... know what I mean?
Well perhaps for the purposes of you tube the tuning parts were cut off because the pieces that are being played are uploaded as individual videos instead of a full real time 1.5 hr concert. Or perhaps there is minimal editing (a few very minor cuts). Whatever the truth may be the point is that Lie Jie is truly masterful guitarist and no gimmicks where used to make it seem so.
Sorry but what you're saying doesn't make sense as applied to this video. She is an accomplished classical guitarist,no doubt. I like a lot of things about her technique. But that doesn't mean that this video isn't dubbed. I don't see how it's mutually exclusive.
i've noticed that in a lot of her videos...it hink she is recording the audio seperatly...and dubbing it over the video...just for better sound quality
I love Li Jie and her playing is world class. Having said that these are not live performances and I believe have been edited or shes sync playing over another recorded track. The open 6th string she plays at 0:17 is a D but the open 6th string she plays at 2:17 is a E. If this happen on the video its reasonable to assume her other ones were done the same. So its not fair to use these videos of her playing for comparison to other top players, especially other players live performances
I play guitar and piano but I dont play this song, and I am not a professional musician. Anyway this is my observations: At 0:17, she plucked 3 notes with thumb, open 5th string, open 6th string, then 3rd fret 6th string, ie A E G. At 2:17, she plucked 2 notes with thumb, open 5th string, then open 6th string, ie A E. They all sound exactly what she plucked. I dont hear or see any D on open 6th string. Am I missing something here?
Thanks for your information. At 0:17, she plucks A D F, which is correct. At 2:17, she plucks A D and you say it sounds A E, so there is a discrepancy of what we see and what we hear from the video, and A D are the correct notes for the song. Am I correct?
"Some fingerings I do not agree with." This is a ridiculous statement. The only thing that matters is what the music sounds like. And guess what - it sounds beautiful.
York's version is different, in ways both subtle and pronounced, and it too is beautiful.
I totally agree with you on that it does sound beautiful. I just found there was some very unnecessary sections in it but that was my opinion I was just stating I never said this was poor in any way it's still the best version on youtube by far and well executed but the second you state an opinion that doesn't yell AMAZING people just start trying to rip in with no backing of their statements. Like York wrote the piece and the music is written to be very crossed stringed in sections.
Umm actually if you knew the piece yourself which I assume you don't because if you did you would be making an ass of yourself because she uses some different fingerings. I have nothing against that all I said was I do not agree with some of her fingerings when is was created to be played cross stringed but okay think what ever. The 16th note run at 1:41 is played evenly for one the 16th notes are bit rushed on the 2nd beat this is why I said not bad. Still the best version on here I think.
Get over yourself you prick. Enjoy the music. Stop being so over critical. She's an incredible guitar player, and she can do whatever the fuck she wants with the piece. She definately doesn't have to satisfy the .01% of listeners out there who come up with over analytical criticisms just to accomodate for their own short comings. Get a life!
Wow... picking on that,,, why not u listen to midi? It will definitely be played evenly... i play sunburst too... I think i got nth negative to comment abt her at all...
Excelente interpretación. Gran técnica. No puedo explicar el porqué del minuto 2:17. Aún si toca con playback, no veo sentido a no pisar el 2º traste en la imagen.
thanks for verifying! i dont read music, i learned by ear. i figured out this song by watching this video and yorks, thats how i found the different note. i thought maybe i was missing something.
she plays great, but now im confused because ive seen a couple other versions of this song and there seems to be a mistake in the sheet music or something. i think its proper to play how the composer/andrew york wrote it. going into part 2:17 the bass note is not open D but E. listen to yorks video.
I can't imagine that anyone could play this better than Li Jie. She is number one in my books.

Get a life!

this is not prerecorded, this girl has a lot of postings and she appears in a master class with her theacher
kikemelo 2 years ago 3
I don't think it is prerecorded either. A very small mistake is still there on picking harmonics.

I don't think this is prerecorded. She has about 12 postings on You Tube.

Best performance of Sunburst I've seen (heard) so far. Excellent.

Excelente interpretación. Gran técnica. No puedo explicar el porqué del minuto 2:17. Aún si toca con playback, no veo sentido a no pisar el 2º traste en la imagen.

thanks for verifying! i dont read music, i learned by ear. i figured out this song by watching this video and yorks, thats how i found the different note. i thought maybe i was missing something.
thanks again!

she plays great, but now im confused because ive seen a couple other versions of this song and there seems to be a mistake in the sheet music or something. i think its proper to play how the composer/andrew york wrote it. going into part 2:17 the bass note is not open D but E. listen to yorks video.
why???
Zaaxun 2 years ago
You're right, and that's what my tabs say, too. Oh well, the girl is still better @ 10 years old than I am after playing for 17 years.
CLASSICBOB4200 2 years ago
with all due respect, check the girl's academic background... you will find out that she is not making anything up

Except of some minor mistakes, this is the best performance ever heard of Sunburst, even better than the same Li Jie's years later...

I prefer the performance by John Williams.
