Grew up in Bay City, miss the river fishing. Back in the day we used to haul in a ton of channel cat and carp from the trainbridge at the Essexville/Bay City border. Perch were always small but still had tons of fun. RIP John the train bridge operator.
all ive been catching was small ones, the ones on the mouth seemed bigger than the ones on the river, they like silver swedish pimples or blue jigging rapalas
well when there in the river during summer i fish up river at the train bridge i havent went out for walleye yet but iv been catching allot of small mouth under independence.
nice vid. hey i was wondering fishing like you guys just jigging the minnow back and forth, what jigging technique would you recommend using? would regular colored jig heads work?
We use fireball jigs, jigging spoons, or jigging rapalas tipped with minnows. And yes, I think our shanty is a shapell. It's been a good one, had it for at least 15 years now. Thanks for the comments.
Haven't been out walleye fishing yet. It's a 2 hour haul for me to get to the Saginaw system so I don't make it over often. I heard they are hammering them on the Bay now though. Any luck for you?
is it really necessary to gaff the first fish? a fish shouldnt be needed for eyes unless they are over 2-3 lbs... and even then, you shouldnt gaff a fish if your not going to keep it.. and sometimes theres no way to tell for sure if it is in the slot or not, so you shouldn't really be gaffing those fish
We usually use Northland fireball jigs with a stinger hook or jigging rapalas. Color depends on water clarity. If it's running dirty we use firetiger or chartreuse. Tip with a minnow or minnow head. They sit right near the bottom.
ive been catching some nice ones but ive been out infront of sunset marina on the river in about 6 foot i limited out once so far but it seems like theres alot more size to the fish than there was two years ago the population is just getting bigger
you know if you slowed down your jigging and made them shorter pulls you would attract the bigger walleyes............they are in there full of eggs and not feeling very active! just a suggestion
@yoda12145 walleye spawn in late March early April and have eggs in them while we're ice fishing for them in Dec., Jan., Feb., & March til the season closes on March 15 in the rivers. Open all year on the bay.
The walleyes are entering the rivers to spawn, they spend most of their time in the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron. They taste great, as good as any I've caught during fly-in fishing trips to Canada.
I am pretty sure the only sublegal we gaffed was the first fish on the video. Gaff is barbless and if you get them in the mouth there is little/no damage. Been catching a lot of shit for it though (rightly so I guess) so I won't be using the gaff anymore unless I know it's a keeper.
come to northern minnesota and catch some real walleyes just last week i cought a 31 inch 10lb one its going on the wall all those looked to be 17 inches er so the ones i keep have to be over 20
incase you werent aware the saginaw bay and its tributaries are ranked #1 in the US for walleye fisheries............the tournament through the ice ranks the top 50 fish and there is never a fish under 7lbs in the top 50 and top 5 is always 12-14 lbs. so come to saginaw/baycity to catch some real walleyes ; )
that on the shiver on the river this year? had a little slower year this year in front of the coastguard station. love the snow mobiles in the backround. lol. get any size this year? heard some kid got a nice 12lb by idependence?
I'm from the Green Bay WI area and have a cottage up on the menominee river in the UP. Just curious but what kind of water depth are you fishing in and how do you pick your spot to fish?
Fishing 12-15 ft. if I remember correctly. As for picking spots...we try to get away from the crowd a little and that's about it. River froze over again last weekend so I hope to be out soon. Good luck.
I think it was during the Shiver. I live in Lansing though, so I usually don't enter the tourney. I used to work @ Gander Mtn. in Saginaw and got to weigh in some of the big hawgs that come from the Saginaw/Tittabawassee - great walleye fishery we have here. Good luck.
I wasn't accusing you of keeping an undersized fish, but I see no point in gaffing a fish that doesn't even weigh one pound. Just because the gaf doesn't have a barb doesn't mean that it doesn't injure the fish. Save the gaf for fish that are surely legal and just grab the little ones with your hand.
ALL walleye under 15" were released, even the one that was gaffed. What wasn't too clear in the video clip is that the gaff I have is barbless and actually doesn't do much damage to the fish provided you stay out of the gills. On small walleye, tissue damage is minimal. In the future I will try to keep those details in mind. Thanks for the comment.
Awsome video but those were some sorry fish and im not sure if the gaff was nesisary for a 12 incher

You need to make sure you only gaff legal fish and you might want to take a tape with they look pretty short.
