Problem with running on NJT or Amtrak would also be the over head wires. Amtrak had to shut off a whole section of the Keystone Corridor just so they could get ex- Nofolk and Western 475 to Strasburg when Strasburg bought her. The stack was to close to the wires!
Well Steamtown does what it can with what it's got. I think 2317 could maybe do 79, but I don't want to stress that engine out. Really, 759 and 3713 should be the long distance engines. Baldwin 26 and NKP 514 should do the Scranton Limited runs. CN 3254 and CP 2317 should do the Moscow runs, etc. That way they use the engines to the best of their abilities and aren't over using any one engine.
The big thing with running on NJT or the Penn system will be the speed of the train. Your running on a high speed commuter rail line. I think Baldwin couldn't do 79 mph if it wanted to. I'd be scared of 3254 doing 79 because it struggles often doing 35... NKP 759 and Boston and Maine 3713 could do it more than likely. I'd love to see Steamtown work a deal out with Ross Rowand Jr. and have CO 614 run, b/c that locomotive can do 79 like it's 25 mph.
Most likely, being that most in the legislation is slated for completion by 2025, I can assume this will be done by then. First segment is starting soon, and should be running by 2014.
Theoretically, NJ Transit's rebuilding the Cut-Off from Hoboken to Scranton for high speed commuter service. So possibly, one day, we'll see steam excursions from Scranton to Hoboken and back. Course, that means that Steamtown would have to restore a high speed, powerful locomotive, like Reading 2124 or Nickel Plate 759. B&M 3713 could probably pull it off, but theyre gonna need something with a lot more power, specially if you consider how many people will want to go on those excursions
Yeah, but we're probably not going to see steam to Hoboken for a long time, since they're starting in Port Morris or Andover, which ever ones farther west, and working east
I think NJT will allow them to run steam, they just need the high speed train. NKP 759 is the one they have picked for the job. It'll probably be running by the time the legislation wakes up and approves the cut off rebuild.
hopefully, if a group comes along to finance it. The Pocono Mountains NRHS chapter wont; theyre too busy keeping the Tobyhanna station standing, the L&WVRR chapter wont do another one, and no one else cares enough
Well I mean, how hard could it be to start something like a Friends of 759? They need someone to help get money into them, and if someone could start an organization that solely helps the 759, that'd be cool.
Who else thinks it would be neat for when they do this to repaint 3254 in the Lackawanna #1271 sceme they had her in back in the 80s. Lackawanna engine and Lackawanna cars on a Lackawanna viaduct. That would be awesome.
Awesome structure. I saw it for the first time last year Silhouetted against the night sky. Scared the crap out of me! I didn't expect to look over and see this huge bridge. The train ride most have been fascinating.
This is great! Thank you for the video of Steamtown and truly wonderful national historic site. My greatist treasure is an autographed photo of F. Nelson Blount that sits above my desk here at home. He was a great man that would be proud of what is efforts have created.

Even though she has bad cylinder casings, which would make restoring her cost a fortune

Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Rail Authority. And after those three it should be GTW #6039, even if it does have bad cylinder casings

Well, they should be able to get clearance, since NPRRA and NJ Transit allow steam

I've always wanted to do something like that, but i've never known where to start or whether i could find people that are interested

Somebody aught to suggest that to Steamtown for the 2010 Convention. That would be a sight

This was the first trip since 1993 due to the line is very busy now. I don't know if and when they will have another one.
mikeexplorer 3 years ago
when do they run this trip?
camaroracer454 3 years ago
Last year was the first time since 1993. The mainline is very busy with freight which makes it hard to do. I don't know when it is planned again.
