  • I love this speech for one reason: if you swap out the names and update the stats the speech still applies. It is that timeless!!

  • For those complaining about the federal reserve. No worries, Obama drained it to pay for his so-called "Free Healthcare". As did he Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It's all pretty simple really. The war only cost 750 billion for 2011, yet obamacare cost 1.6 trillion, just for 2011. For 2009-2010, is cost 1.8 trillion about, rounding to the nearest billion that is. It's amazing isn't it? How we just turn our Freedoms over to Obama as though he'll take care of everything.

  • Compare the "moral duty" philosophy behind the foreign policy stance espoused in this speech to the "appeasement and accomodation" foreign policy of Obama, and the non-interventionist ("diplomacy and trade") stance of one of the GOP candidates now running for the nomination. Replace the the spread of totalitarian communism with the spread of Islamo Facism. and this speech is just as relevant TODAY as it was THEN---only with different forces involved.

While I endorse limiting and then ending the Federal Reserve, and I oppose cutting corporate taxes, I don't think either one is exactly Stalinism. We should be pushing for more freedom, but without tearing down or failing to appreciate the freedom we have. Reagan wasn't a demi god. He was as human as Obama is. Reagan didn't try to create utopia. He just tried to make America better. And he succeeded.

  • @JohnJ2427 If we cut corporate business taxes, income taxes, and sales taxes and bring them all down to one flat tax rate, we'll have some actual money to work with. The corporate tax rate sitting where it is, is part of the reason why work is as scarcely found right now. They're paying 30 to 40% of their annual income to the fed gov't. That means they have no extra cash to work with. Less cash = Higher prices, lower wages, less employment opportunity.

  • I showed this to a 21 yr old somewhat liberal minded friend and he was fascinated and completely captivated, he was mesmerized by the passion, literary depth,imagery and sincere delivery. He had never heard a President Reagan give a speech before. It is a shame that this rare mixture of charisma and sincerity seem all but extinct. We need a new one in the worst way.

  • As a progressive, I disagree with his views on foreign policy and aggression; however Reagan was an honorable man who spoke eloquently and with conviction. I miss the days when a politician would use phrases like "our well meaning liberal friends" rather than the vitriol that comes out of DC now.

He sponsored widespread terror and murders of innocent civilians across Central America. He invaded Granada, a country that posed no threat to the United States. He watched and did nothing while the American infrastructure and manufacturing sector fell into disrepair. He was senile for part of his presidency and did not step down as he should have.

    My opinion; Reagan was a man of profoundly strong principles, unfortunately he was really not the same after he was shot and GHW took over day to day management of the government.

    Regarding Iran / Contra, as you mentioned, he was a bit senile at the time. It's quite clear he didn't really know the situation on that front.

    Finally, the deficits (and the large defence buildup) contributed to an early collapse of the Soviet Union.

  • @martynrobin121 I'm sorry that is not entirely true. By 1939 Chamberlain had clearly come to understand that Germany could not be trusted; it is possible that he may have accepted some kind of peace offering, but he would not have accepted any that involved anything other than status-quo-ante.

    Certainly, Churchill and the Casablanca conference changed the official policy to one that meant that the destruction of the Nazi and Japanese regimes were the war aims, and only unconditional surrender

  • @disamjisa After the B.E.F disaster at France,Norway,etc and France fallen, Adolf Hitler wanted peace with Britain, Hitler even said that Germany,Italy would withdraw from Western Europe. Churchill refused any peace talks with Hitler, Just like 1918 Churchill wanted total humiliation. Churchill refused all peace talks by Germany during the war, Churchill was a war mongor who in the end, destroyed Britain and Europe and helped spread Communism and crush the British Empire into history!

    Chamberlain's demise came far more from the indignity and shame that came form the "peace in our time" fiasco, and then the fall of France and the Low Countries, and the Narvik disaster, put his leadership in clear focus.

    Churchill was the right man, at the right time, for the job. But Chamberlain was not the appeaser that he is made out to be, and certainly nothing along the lines of the Lord Halifax / Cliveden cliques

The European Axis powers would defeat Communism and be weak,broke and in debt! Communism was the bigger threat even Churchill said so! Remember Communism is still super power and evil today guilty of the most horrific crimes in history, Fasism and Communism were both evil, It was a mistake to help communism during the war!
