"Carulì" is the Neapolitan vocative form for the Neapolitan "Caruline" (don't forget that the last vowel "e", when it is not stressed, in Neapolitan is always pronounced like the "e" in "writer"). So I think that in English it would be better to translate "Caroline", because only the Neapolitan language, differently from English, abbreviates always the vocative form (for exemple, the vocative form of "Antonio" is "Antò", "Eduardo" is "Eduà", "Carmela" is "Carmè").
Carlo Buti è molto bravo, senza dubbio; però mi permetto di suggerire due interpreti he a mio avviso cantano marechiaro in maniera incredibile: Tito Schipa e Giuseppe Di Stefano
I grew up with my father listening to Carlo Buti and Beniamino Gigli probably the greatest songster and the greatest tenor of the last century. What a lucky guy I was. Now you get Licitra and Bocelli. God help us. Listen to the soul in this singing. The phrasing.
I'll be...! I've been singing this tune for over 1/2 a century but could hardly understand the lyrics. Just now I find what it ws, with your English translation!! (i know Italian but no Neapolitan. (and my language is Spanish) I have a daughter whose name is Caroline - Wow - I'm gonna tell her about this!!
Thanks so much Kostas for sharing this immortal gem of music... Thanks reduxmisc for posting it... Carlo Buti is incomparable. No one of recent artists can touch him!
Beautiful put together. I learn something new everyday. I always thought the song was about the sea and now I find out it is a place in Naples. Enchanting city and Buti singing makes it a perfect scene.
Merveilleux Carlo Buti !!!

If only the world would sing of love, like the Neaopolitans.
This is what God made us for, to love one another and love Him.
