you could put some old magazines or something under the lid while drilling...it would make mom happier. Also a piece of nylon or tulle fabric with rubber-bands works instead of using the lid. I like the dish rack idea and the use of a big jar. thanks.

Or you could also cut a smaller circle out of the lid and put a wire or plastic mesh underneath it and just screw it on, easy peasy.
