Within the brief hours of your life here on earth, you gave me faith in the darkest hours; you shall live in my memory until the call of my own destiny. Take thy sleep brother Mark.
This is such a great album from such a wicked band. There's no one else who quite sounds like Mark, eh? It is sad we all lost him but his art lives on. RIP Mark Reale, Metal God.
I don't say this lightly. Fire Down Under might be the best hard rock album ever made. It's certainly up there with albums like Machine Head, Operation Mindcrime and Mob Rules.
EVERY song on the album is different, innovative, and awesome. Restless Breed isn't too far behind, but FDU has stronger song writing.
@McCartyrocks I think you're right on about Fire. A lot of people throw around the words "underrated" and "under appreciated", in this case its absolutely true. People talk about how its a shame that Anvil never made it, but its really Riot that should've had the documentary and the accolades, because unlike a lot of bands, Riot deserved great success and NEVER made a bad record, always great LPs.
@satansmightyphallus I couldn't agree more. Restless Breed is also an excellent album, and now that I have Born In America on vinyl (and a killer turntable set up) I have a greater appreciation for it as well. I recently got a mint copy of Rock City too.
I still consider Mark Reale and Criss Oliva to be the most deserving of critics praise. It's a shame that it took Trans Siberian Orchestra for Savatage to get noticed, and that was after we lost Criss.
@McCartyrocks I think there's also a bit selfishness when it comes to underground and obscure bands, and I'm certainly guilty of it, I think of them as "my band" or "this is OUR band, its not for them". I think a lot of fans want bands to have success allude them, thinking that will keep them "pure" and ensure they don't have a commercial wimp out. For every Metallica, there's an Iron Maiden or Thin Lizzy doing what they want without compromise.
I may be taking a part time gig on a rock station, and in memory of Mark, the first song I'm going to play is Fire Down Under. RIP Mark, and may God bless your family and friends.
For those of you who haven't listened to early Riot, prior to their power/speed metal days, you really need to. They were by far the most underrated metal band of the 70's, 80's, and Mark is one of the most innovative and creative guitarists in rock history.
I love this song! Just had the pleasure of seeing this band for the first time on the 70000 Tons of Metal cruise and I had to hear the unfortunate news of Mark Reale's passing. RIP!
ama big fan of power metal nd srsly this is the first time i hear of this band....i think it stands right beside rebellion, gammaray, iced eart, sonata artica, helloween, rhapsody of fire.....all the good stuff :)
Thundersteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel!!!!.....oh, wait?. 23 years is so much time for rewriting a song, but anyway, this is the song I was expecting...great
This sounds nothing like Thundersteel except maybe the first fast riff which has the same "thing" as the Thundersteel first riff. Otherwise nothing like it
Wow, I just discovered these guys and I'm blown away. This song is just plain over the top. Gonna blast it in my car and speed down the highway. RIOT!
I just heard this for the first time today and it Blew Me Away! Riot Kicks Ass!
