@fejag58 Seems like bubblegum is coming back dude, it's certainly better than all that fucking hardcore metal crap all the kids are thrashing their arms and legs to.
Thanks, enjoyed it. This is the group that went on to make some real Bubble Gum music after we recorded Beg Borrow and Steal. We recorded Beg Borrow and Steal live on YouTube recently, and hope you enjoy that too.
Ever notice that the Stereo version is a different version than the Mono 45 version? I like the Mono Version better, myself. The Stereo version, to me, is a bit to "Polished" sounding..
tomK back. CHEW CHEWY just came in today on a cd for me to enjoy as i did in 68. this doo wop rocknroll historian who lived thru the 50s and beyond likes it when i see you youtubers admiring this greatest of bubblegum songs. thanks again Ohio Express. Its great to have you back. TOMK
here i am a 50s rock historian snd i know great music. but ill confess silly as this song is, I LOVE IT. Best bubblegum song ever. i played it hundreds of times in 1968. i recall it vividly. its bubble , no pun intended, upbeat, funny and catchy. lets not knock it. look at the junk served up today in the RAP of today. ill take this song anytime. thanks Ohio Express. TOMK
Cool song! I've never heard it before. I grew up as a child in the 1980s but I listened to the oldies station as a kid. I thought I knew all the one hit wonders. FOOLED ME!!! Thanks for sharing!
love it! Take me back, mamma. Those of you youngsters can't possibly get this. A classic like no other and too bad you didn't get to be alive during that time.
yes actually, and gimme gimme and gimme gimme good lovin' and he helped write mony mony and he wrote sometimes you feel like a nut sometimes you dont.
moved there b/c he started making songs for commercials and then after a couple of years americans didnt really hire him for commercials. he started getting alot of commercial jobs in london and italy. but more in italy so he moved there to be near the buisiness he was doing all the commercials for. forget the company though. we r back in america though. moved back in 98'
@midgetmaster234 - I believe that he did! We just got a toy poodle and named him Chewy, too, and my sisters and I could swear we heard a song called "Chewy", so I looked it up, and of course, found it on Youtube. If I'm not mistaken, this song was also used on a candybar commercial in the 1960s, too!! It is really catchy.
I remember listening to this while I was in "Nam in the late summer and fall of 1968. What a contrast ther was between the lyrics of this song and what I saw over there!
Much death and sadness. There was such a great contrast between bubblegum music and combat. It seemed very ironic and surreal. I was a Navy hospital corpsman assigned to the 1st battalion First Marine Division. One day I was loading casualties into a helo and we were hit by a rocket barrage. Our radioman who was not more than 20 feet from me was incinerated. Don't misunderstand. I love the music but it has memories attached to it.
Down at Lulu's was 3months after Yummy and Chewy was 3 months after Lulu's. All three songs came out in 1968. Their first song, Beg, Borrow, And Steal was out in 1967, and their last top 40 song, Mercy, came out in the early 1969. Kind of silly material to sing about at the time.
If Jimi Hendrix was alive today, he would praise that kind of music. Bubblegum songs from the 60s are extremely commercial, and catchy, and stand out among the the other private sounding stuff. check out Ron Dante doing Sugar Sugar, it is actually him on most of the instruments and singing in the original anyway.
I'm 58 years old Dermie, was the lead singer of 5 differnt bands in the 60's The Fibers, Custer's Last Band, The Crystal Embankment, Loves Labors Lost, and finally The Dreamlovers.(last one in the 90s). I have an open mind for music, love all the bubble gum (reason stated in first comment) but Dermie, I also love groups like the Beatles, The Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix Experience, and so many British groups from the 60s. not just bubblegum music.
loved moody blues beatles (particularly the weird stuff like revolution number 9) I think hendrix is overrated though what he could have been if he had'nt died...
Actually Dermie, with all that acid he downed, I believe he would perhaps have become another Bobby Fischer. I think his best accomplishments were his ballads. really tear jerking originals. I wasn't a Jimi fan, but more of a 60's British group fan. You know the Kinks, Zombies, Who, Animals, Beatles of course, and about a 100 other groups that were outstanding. How old are you?
That's great, that you enjoy all types of music. Why should there be a wall between liking the Ohio Express, the 1910 Fruitgum Company, and the Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, Moody Blues, etc.? It's all good! It's all music. It's essential!
"Chewy Chewy" by The Ohio Express first charted October 19, 1968 and hung in for 13weeks -- peaking at #15 and selling over a million copies. Other great Ohio Express hits: "Yummy Yummy Yummy," "Down At Lulu's" and "Mercy."
Briliant !! Rememer this album my parent's had, used to play it to death when I was around 10, and it was old then!! Many thanks for posting - well groovy, man!
I was the road manager and Manager of the "Ohio Express" in the late 70s through the early 90s. THANKS for the Video! WOW this brings back a lot of great memories! Those were the days!!
Remembered when my sister and I partied with these guys in Muskegon, MI in th 70's and I hid my sister and one of the band members clothes from them when they were skinny-dipping in the Greys Motel swimming pool!
One odd thing that made The Ohio Express unique was the way they seemed to equate romance with food. Hence "Yummy Yummy Yummy," "Chewy Chewy" and "Sweeter Than Sugar" -- allin 1968-9. Great records all.
Alright fellows--upload chewy, chewy. I love the record playing-but this it´s about viewing more then just listening--actually both aspects it´s what makes all the fun of it worth it as well.

Play this record backwards and it says, "Kill your parents, smoke marijuana, overthrow the government, support Ho Chi Minh, and don't brush your teeth."
I used to have to hide this record from my parents, because they heard there was something hidden sexy in the song. I wonder what they would do with RAP stuff today? Ha Ha.

I didn't let anyone know back in the day that I liked bubble gum music, but I privately enjoyed it, and still do.
A lot of people knock the stuff, but you can argue that its positive, simple, and you can understand the lyrics.
I would think that bubble gum music was a blessing, given the dismal, Vietnam War backdrop.
