nice story you can learn alot from these old timers even as a kid i use to like to listen to there storys how things were and what types of things that whent on in the world it was pretty wish it was like that today
Knocking people down should still be part of the game, problem is even the crappy hitters make 2-3 million a year so the teams cant afford for anybody to get hurt..
@bestwaffleg er, no heres some numbers for you 'In 1947 the average baseball player earned $11,000 a year, a little more than four times the pay of the average American worker..In 1973 baseball salaries had jumped to $36,000, but workers too had generally experienced a large gain (to $9,500), leaving the player-worker ratio still a little under the 1947 level. But by 1999 the average baseball player was earning $1.57 million, while the average worker earned just $28,000: a ratio of 56 to one.
@bestwaffleg Yeah, everything was stable until Free Agency blew everything wide open in terms of the disconnect between players pay and the average joe. Its the same in all sports.
My sister's dog used to bark his head off if you mentioned Tommy Lasorda. Too funny. I used to boo the guy at the Astrodome, just because he was the best competitor and everyone knew it. I am sure he loved the boo's! The Dodger's put on a great show with him. Thanks for posting.
Towards the late 80's players became more interested in individual statistics and the biggest paycheck. That is when old school ball players went away. Roids really ruined this game. It's still a great game but it used to be so much better.
I'm a Giants fan. We've always pretended like we hated Tommy Lasorda. The truth is we love the guy. He's 100% authentic. He's Mr. Baseball in so many ways.
I have always been a Phillies fan, but I remember the days spending summers at the Jersey shore. We picked up WPIX. I watched Yankees games all of the time with Rizzuto, White and Messer at the mike. Great stuff. I have great respect for the Yankees.
"Hey Banana Nose!" Old timey insults are so much better than the ones we use today.
