@TavernacleRecords Clarification: Reverend has lots of good guitars with a variety of pickups, and their amps are top notch as well. I've heard good things about their pedals too but haven't tried one. And no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way. Just love their products.
some think the p90 is a fluffy little 50s pickup. and it can be but it can also be a very angry little mofo. they are super hot. new gibson p90s have a DC resistance of 8.9. higher than some active EMGs.
@zcbensel Indeed. I have a Xaviere XV-650 (strat-style HOLLOW body with 2 P-90s) on its way to me, and the deciding factor was a video I saw of a guy playing metal on one plugged into a Mesa Boogie half stack!!!
@TavernacleRecords Update: I have received my Xaviere guitar and am amazed at how good it is for the price. Fender tone in spades, good workmanship, setup was ready to go right out of the box. It came in a wooden hard shell case, delivered for $233, and it is probably going to become my main axe out of 5 electrics. I will be ordering their Strat copy as soon as possible. I also received their GFS Bluesdrive pedal and am equally impressed with that! Sounds great into my Nova System.
@TavernacleRecords I can't speak about xaviere guitars, but gfs pickups are amazing. Like, even if they were priced like Duncans they'd be a good deal.
@Megamaniac610 My Xaviere has the stock P-90s and the thought of replacing them hasn't crossed my mind. Shielding is needed though. Also, the pickup selector toggle switch has now failed, but I had already decided I wanted to do tone mods and void the warranty anyway, so I don't mind. My new soldering station keeps begging to be plugged in more often.
I love p90's. My first guitar had them, and at first I wished I'd got something with humbuckers. But the more I played, the more I loved them. Yes, they're noisy, especially with high gain tones (that's what a volume knob or noise gate is for), but you'll just not find a pickup that's more versatile IMO. I'm into stoner rock and dirty overdriven blues stuff I find the pronounced mids and clarity of a p90 really help cut through the mix once you've tuned down to B and added fuzz/distortion etc.
@systemsmith Ditto. I had wanted a guitar with P-90s for years, ever since playing a PRS Soapbar II SE for five minutes. I went crazy over the past 10 days and have ordered 3 of them. Two have arrived and I am in heaven! The winner so far is the Epiphone '61 50th Anniversary Limited reissue in TV Yellow, delivered (arrived next day) with gig bag for just under $400, from Sweetwater (Thanks Robby!). I am less pleased with the other (from a different vendor), a Hofner CT Series Colorama II.
@TavernacleRecords I have a Hofner Colorama II at the moment. Not as comfortable as an SG and it is a heavy beast but I like it. A pickup upgrade helps, the stock ones are a bit too well behaved. A bit bright. I stuck some GFS p90s in mine and it warmed things up nicely. Pot and cap upgrades are next.
@systemsmith Thanks for the tips! I haven't given up on my Colorama II yet, but it arrived with poor setup and the bridge pickup was hanging loose. I haven't had time to do a proper setup on it yet; I'm sure that will help. I won't mind if the stock pickups are somewhat well behaved, because my other electrics tend to be on the beautifully rude side ;^}~
@systemsmith Glad to hear that you like the GFS P-90s; have you tried any of their guitars? I can't wait for my Xaviere to arrive, as I prefer Strat necks with maple fretboards and don't have anything like that currently. I'm finding it hard to go back to rosewood after playing maple for years, and the ebony board on my Parker has spoiled me!
@TavernacleRecords Not tried Xaviere (I'm in the UK and got the pickups cheap off a forum over here). The Yamaha SG copy they do looks tasty though. Would love the real thing, with p90's of course. Not bothered by board material. The maple board on my P-Bass is lovely and the Charvel San Dimas I had a shot of recently was one of the best necks I've played. Neck shape is more important though. Saving for a Tele with maple neck. Anything other than maple on a Fender looks wrong IMO.
@systemsmith The only Strat I ever liked with rosewood was a '68 cherry sunburst I bought for $125. Wish I still had it! I'll let you know how the Xaviere is once it arrives. It was a last-second change of mind, as I saw the clearance-priced XV-650 just as I was about to purchase one of their maple tele copies. The videos I saw of both seem to indicate that they can really nail the vintage Fender tone. I'm also ordering the GFS BluesDrive Classic pedal from them tonight.
TBH even though i dont listen to him as often as i probably should, if i aquired this guitar id most likely go in my back garden and pretend i was Angus Young playing Donnington lol
Yep, both of my guitars are p90 equipped, Gibson SG Classic, and a GIbson Les Paul Nashville Junior. I play country, blues, jazz, rock, metal. Might need to turn the gain up a little more than normal for metal, but you will hear what emgs lack...rawness and soul.
@DeluxeGoldTop hello mate, i've just bought a wildkat with p90's, and they sound amazing, but for the heavier stuff, they feedback insanely when i stop playing......do you know if a noise gate would solve this problem?? i dont wanna change the pups as they sound quality, as long as i play constantly!!! Do you have this problem when you turn up??
@locolegsharvey you can roll of the volume when you stop playing, or you can completely roll off volume in one pickup and switch to it when you stop playing. good noise gates arent cheap.
The P90 is excellent for many things, but my emg's give me so much more clarity that i need for my music. But it would be sooo nice to have the Les Paul Studio with P90's in the studio =)
@Metalwurst666 I play in a stonerband, and I am going to build my second guitar this summer.. a Rickenbacker 4003-style guitar, and I will put a TV Jones powertron plus pickup in bridge-position, then a p-90 for neck:)
Had trouble deciding whether to pick a P-90 or not, but this convinced me:)
@prixies.... go with 5's, you can allways get the lower output sound with the guitars volume or pickup hieght adjustment but you can't get a 5 sound from a 2
@aaffendy I don't know any reference with P90's, but I do know that Metallica used regular passive single coils while recording Whiplash, Seek & Destroy, and One.
Telecasters are pretty good metal guitars... belive it or not the bridge pickup cranked up close to te strings makes a pretty heavy sound really trebley
go to a guitar store n play a single coil guitar then play a bucker then find a p90 guitar n ull love it...maybe...least i did..i love them man they rip, probly more versitle, its like the goods about a bucker n the goods about a single coil all in one, even if the goods to you are difrent!
Is feedback a problem with p90s if I play without a noise gate? Does it make a difference if I back off with the volume knob? Also how bad is the hum and does it decrease if I back off on the volume knob?
Pretty brutal. Another cool route is getting P-rails. My band uses them on one of the guitars and is absolutely excellent. I'm thinking of getting p90's in one of my guitars.
The tone of a guitar lies in the midrange, so why suck it all out? Just get like an Ibanez with EMGs or something. Don't use midrangey pickups for modern rock.
I used to play a '67 SG jr (with P90 of course) in a metal band and can confirm that it would get very much in this kind of tonal territory with a suitable amp (i.e. one with lots of gain like a Dual Recto).
I just bought an SG Classic with P-90s, and I am running it through a Egnater Tourmaster 4100. Let me tell you, those P-90s can do many, many Versatile tones. On the Hi Gain Channels with the EQ set right those P-90 Guitars will do METAL(especailly if you tune down like this recording) The trick is in your EQ on the Amp, and the Tone, and Volume pots on your Guitar. Dont Play right on Top of the amp though as you will be greeted with FeedBack.
I've actually been looking around at all sorts of pickups to drop into my guitar for a nice, but different metal sound. I think this almost has me convinced haha

You kill the guit dude, playing it in a pod ? no way ... asshole, and yeah all guitar can play metal with a pedal, but remember, that tony iommi, a first play a strat, and then a sg with p90 ...
The longer you play, the more you appreciate the tone from the pickup in shaping the overall sound.
I want to get a few more guitars with different pickup combo's. This is especially important when mixing 2 guitar sounds on the one track, they have to have different P'ups at least IMO. You can't have 2 guitarists in a band playing thru the same style rig, you just can't.
I have this same model but Epiphone and im getting intonation problems (not the tuning) and the height of the string can't get that low i wonder if this a gibson trademark of having the string a little bit high... i maxed the limit and still feels high. Anyone can advice me?
not when you know how to properly set up an amp, i can make my strat stand. with stock single coil p/u's sound heavy as fuck.
Plus, even if you're somewhat right (it is easier to get a heavy sound), it's different. Everyone is using duncans and EMG humbuggys, it's about fucking time for a new sound! But i don't feel like ranting today, so i leave it at that.
I know that you don't have to use humbuckers for a metal sound, And I can make my strat with stock pickups sound heavy too. But if I where to use an equal amount of gain and the same settings on my amp with a humbucker equipped guitar It would sound heavier and more suited for metal.
I posted the comment cus Alaab925 was thinking of buying a guitar with p90s and I didn't want him to think that p90s sound heavier than humbuckers.
plus, Yngwie Malmsteen gets a killer shred sound from his strat
"I think it kind of goes to show that you don't need Invaders, EMGs, or anything else with massive output to get a good, solid metal tone."
TOTALLY!
if i had to chose between emgs and p90s to play metal, i'd rather use the p90s ! i've had enough of emgs. not that i don't like em. but that's not for me
@Megamaniac610 EMG's are ugly. they should make them with chrome or gold covers. but i don't like active pickups either. passive pickups are the way to go!
@Megamaniac610 i can sympathise with you mate, i got a set of EMG 81 85 Zakk Wylde series pickups, dont get me wrong they are amazing pickups, but the tone is compressed ( seems easier with 18v mod), and my main fault with them is they are too common now, people loved emgs cos they wer different, now everyone has them its the norm, think i may sell my set lol
wondering if anyone could help. i wanna change the bridge on me strat to a P90, and if i used a dogear then i could just screw it unto my pickguard (or so im told). is this true? any input's appreciated.
yeah i considered that but i dont have cash for a nice HB P-90 (those usually cost more cause of the special size) and a pickguard n all that jazz. thinking about a lollar strat bridge with a tele sound.
This is really cool, but it doesn't surprise me. Amps carry so much distortion these days that you really don't need super high output pickups. It's not like you need an X2N to push your old marshall head into death metal territory...there are amps that go there with the gain at 1/2 max already.
This P-90 pick ups could get evil. I'm serioulsly considering getting my new guitar with at least one of them on board to get this nice, snarling distortion.
They are good. But they are not tight and they are very noisy. Depends on the metal you play. More stoner rock, jam band style metal would be great with a P90 or humbucker. But modern, tighter metal, or dropped tunings would probably be better done with a humbucker. There's just a cool nastiness to P90's that humbuckers don't have.
@lifeisdeath203 well he does say that very little processing and compression was used, so if you used a compression pedal and maybe a bit more distortion you'd have pretty much everything
this just proves the point that if you got the right amp, you don't need high output humbuckers. Of course if you don't have the skill it doesn't matter anyway
As if your video wasn't enough to prove the point, remember that Tony Iommi played an SG with P-90s early on in Black Sabbath, and Jake E. Lee played an SG Junior with a dogear P-90 similar to yours on tour with Ozzy during the Ultimate Sin tour.... P-90s definitely work for metal.....
great tone! I love p-90's for alot of stuff, i've always wondered why everyone thinks they need mega hot pickups to get a good metal tone. this'll prove them wrong.
no metal guitars only metal guitarists =]

alaab925 2 years ago
ironic that in order to get a new sound you have to go back to 1950's technology.

haha, it is!

p90s are the best imo
bondman00794 2 years ago
so are the p94 pups hotter? just askin
AndreHatesYou 2 years ago
94s are the same, just designed to fit Humbucker routing
antihax91 2 years ago
the general rule of thumb seems to be more output= less tone. Not always the case, but it holds true most of the time.
Megamaniac610 2 years ago
Meaning the P90's have less tone? I respectfully disagree, but I wasn't sure if that was what you were saying.
MattMadoni 2 years ago
No I mean EMGs have less tone than P90s
Megamaniac610 2 years ago
Oh that makes more sense ;)
MattMadoni 2 years ago
How do you quantitatively measure tone?
thedonutman 2 years ago
@thedonutman with a ruler

iv got a LP.jr to, also useing it for metal(: \m/
rasmuslorenzen3 2 years ago
"I think it kind of goes to show that you don't need Invaders, EMGs, or anything else with massive output to get a good, solid metal tone."
TOTALLY!
if i had to chose between emgs and p90s to play metal, i'd rather use the p90s ! i've had enough of emgs. not that i don't like em. but that's not for me
amaurythewarrior 2 years ago 3
fucking EVERYONE uses EMG's, I'm so freaking sick of them. P90's don't get enough love :(
Megamaniac610 2 years ago 54
oh i think they do. but not from the same persons.
amaurythewarrior 2 years ago
@Megamaniac610 you know emg makes p 90s
caroffcliff 1 year ago
@caroffcliff no, EMG makes EMG humbuckers which fit in P90 routes. They sound nothing like P90s.
Megamaniac610 1 year ago
@Megamaniac610 EMG's are ugly. they should make them with chrome or gold covers. but i don't like active pickups either. passive pickups are the way to go!
jks2 1 year ago
@jks2 They DO make them with chrome and gold covers.
Megamaniac610 1 year ago
@jks2 They do actually [yes this is old comment], they have it in chrome black gold. Not saying you should waste money on them though.
Kingddd333 1 year ago
@Megamaniac610 i can sympathise with you mate, i got a set of EMG 81 85 Zakk Wylde series pickups, dont get me wrong they are amazing pickups, but the tone is compressed ( seems easier with 18v mod), and my main fault with them is they are too common now, people loved emgs cos they wer different, now everyone has them its the norm, think i may sell my set lol

wondering if anyone could help. i wanna change the bridge on me strat to a P90, and if i used a dogear then i could just screw it unto my pickguard (or so im told). is this true? any input's appreciated.
sunp 2 years ago
Get A Loller!
sawboss17 2 years ago
eh...maybe...p90s in general, especially dogeared ones are really wide, it might run into your volume control.
I would buy an HSS strat pickguard and put in a humbucker sized p90. just my thoughts.
HowlinJay 2 years ago
yeah i considered that but i dont have cash for a nice HB P-90 (those usually cost more cause of the special size) and a pickguard n all that jazz. thinking about a lollar strat bridge with a tele sound.
sunp 2 years ago
Rio Grande makes a strat-sized pickup that is made to sound like a p90, you could look into that
Megamaniac610 2 years ago
any guitar can play metal as long a as you have enough distortion. I can play metal from my Encore strat.
Ibik 2 years ago
tattooedcarrot, what are some bands that sound like this, and/or influenced this song?
Voomek 2 years ago
dude this is awesome \,,/. By the way how much did you get this guitar for? I've been looking for an sg jr, but can't seem to find one.
TheSuperSTRAT 2 years ago
This guitar was purchased used from GC for about 800 bucks.
Good luck finding one for that price now...
sosomething 2 years ago
Dude that guitar in the video would be worth atleast 15k now.......... any 1960's era SG is worth a pretty penny
LordOfThisWorld74 2 years ago
wao very good the sound !
I love the guitar !

Wow, that was a really good recording. And an awesome song. I loved it.

Could those emg p90's pull off a metal sound?
tpcjames111 2 years ago
id imagine they do a even better job considering they're EMGs. not sure tho
sunp 2 years ago
Actually, I think that they are p90's replacement. So its just a plain ol' 81 in the shape of a p90. But I'm not 100% sure about that.
jimimitsos 2 years ago
I called emg and thats what they told me.I want a les paul jr with emgs now.
tpcjames111 2 years ago
Yes, they're actually just the 81/85/60 all in p-90 size.
hearshotkid91 2 years ago
This is really cool, but it doesn't surprise me. Amps carry so much distortion these days that you really don't need super high output pickups. It's not like you need an X2N to push your old marshall head into death metal territory...there are amps that go there with the gain at 1/2 max already.
AeonsOfFrost 2 years ago
plus you can sometimes actually squeeze a more classic sounding tone if you use these lower output sort of pickups
i definetly agree with the amps thing though
luta5 2 years ago
This P-90 pick ups could get evil. I'm serioulsly considering getting my new guitar with at least one of them on board to get this nice, snarling distortion.
rogaty87 2 years ago
Are the P90s really good for metal, or is this just a really good recording?
I need to know 'cause I'm trying to decide if I should get a Gibson SG Classic or a Gibson SG Standard, and metal is one of the genres I play.
lifeisdeath203 2 years ago
They are good. But they are not tight and they are very noisy. Depends on the metal you play. More stoner rock, jam band style metal would be great with a P90 or humbucker. But modern, tighter metal, or dropped tunings would probably be better done with a humbucker. There's just a cool nastiness to P90's that humbuckers don't have.
TattooedCarrot 2 years ago
@TattooedCarrot Is everything recorded with P90´s?
WoompaFilms 1 year ago
@lifeisdeath203 well he does say that very little processing and compression was used, so if you used a compression pedal and maybe a bit more distortion you'd have pretty much everything
Megamaniac610 1 year ago
Amazing tone !

Irishfury09 3 years ago
Woot for the P90's out there! I have an sg junior also and I love it. The P90 pickup really has that unique sound its great
Irishfury09 3 years ago
this just proves the point that if you got the right amp, you don't need high output humbuckers. Of course if you don't have the skill it doesn't matter anyway
Megamaniac610 3 years ago
Glad to see another case of P-90 love!
P-90s definitely work for metal.....
echale3 3 years ago
great tone! I love p-90's for alot of stuff, i've always wondered why everyone thinks they need mega hot pickups to get a good metal tone. this'll prove them wrong.

pinguino117 3 years ago
so the p90s are single coils in the shape of a humbucker? this has no single coil sound it has awesome tone
A7XAvA 3 years ago
They arent normally humbucker shaped (although there are some "p90s in humbucker shells"), p90 soapbars have their own size and shape
NaturesBeast 3 years ago
its basically a single coil with a thicker and crunchier sound. not to mention less hum
jayhawk808 3 years ago
children of SG
wisesatyr72 3 years ago
P-90's can do any style and still sound great. I'm going to put Seymour Duncan P-rails in my Epi SG.
