  • thanks a lot mate for this video. It works, It took some time to open the top cover but it works.

  • Thanks that was extremely helpful, I called the local dealer and they claim they've never changed one before and suggested i take the car in....Thank God for Youtube!!

  • Holy Shit! You are the man, and then some.

  • Excellent thanks.. I have only one of these keys with my Passat ( bought 3 days ago) the local dealership wants £175 for a spare, This sounds like classic rip-off Britain. Any advice as to where cheaper keys may be bought, Germany perhaps ?

  • nice one, good clear instructions, here goes...

  • Thanks for it.....I changed the battery without problem but it did not work to remotely control my passat B6 ?? Did tried put it into the ignition and it can start the car without problem but still cannot sync with the car.....Any hints to solve it ??

  • nice video - and a good tip - my b6 is more than 6 years old by now and battery has never gone flat ... wondering how long it'll keep going

  • Very easy and straight forward - easiest way to remove the silver top is have the none secret button side facing you and push it away from yourself, if it's never been removed it will take some effort.

  • This key is called Kessy, just add it to the labels for easy-finding for others.

Anyways, helped me a lot .. one thing: the top-metal cap is first-time not easy to remove, just push sidewards the 'secret push-button', or use a mini-flat screwdriver (you will damage little plastic).

  • Thanks for this, really simple and well put together video. this has just saved me the hassle of getting stung by a VW dealer! Who knows what they would've charged!

  • Thanks mate!!!!!

  • Fantastic Vid, well done.Saved me a whole load of running around and bother.Good man.If your ever in London i owe you a beer :-)

  • good video!

  • Fabulous! You answered my question about why I can't open my trunk. Thank you!!!

  • Very informative. Saved me time and money. Thanks!

  • Thanks for this vid. Saved me some wonga. Cheers mate.

  • Thanks for sharing this knowledge with us all. I had the very same type of key in my hand today and decided against levering it apart in what I now know to be the wrong place. You have saved me £££££'s. Excellent video, keep up the good work!

  • This a great tutorial!! I change my own battery FOB. It cost me less than $5 for a pack of 2 CR2032 batteries at Walmart. I changed the battery but it still didn't unlock/lock the car. I was able to still start the car. I reprogram the FOB. To reprogram- Lock the doors from outside manually. Press the unlock symbol on the key fob then unlock the door manually with the key, get in and start the car. This should reprogram your key.

The key gets "unprogrammed" by hitting the button too many t

  • thanks man

  • great job, thanks!

  • you have to remove the key as shown and then it slides sideways. It will take some effort if its never been done before. You will hear a click and it will move 1/8th inch sideways. Then you can withdraw the top. It cannot be removed if the key is still in place as this prevents sideways movement.

  • I have used pliers, screwdrivers, hammers, hands everything but just cant take off the silver top bit wich u just take off with ur hands, how can i do it?

    thanks

  • @k4zmi

He makes it look simple to remove the silver cap off the key fob. It takes a bit of effort to remove it though. You need to apply a lot of thumb pressure to slide it to the side towards where the little "hidden" button is. Once you have applied enough pressure you will hear a click and magically it does slide to clear the button, and then you simply lift it off.

(I found that opening the fob to get at the battery was not simple either.)

  • @johnfoconnor

thanks for the advice, it woz actually vry easy wht i didnt understand woz tht the silver bit needs to slide then it comes apart.

However the battery has been replaced but key fob still wont lock/ unlock the car but it does start with it!!

  • @k4zmi If u were locked out of your car because ur keyfob bat. died, you use the "valet" (hidden) key to unlock the driver's door and then simply place ur keyfob in ignition to turn on ignition. It should then be fully functional again.

If that does not work and you have a spare keyfob: turn ignition on with good fob. Lock drivers door using valet key. Press Unlock button on your bad keyfob, wait 6 seconds, press unlock again. It should work now.

I am running out of chars, so I hope it wrks.

  • Thanks, great tutorial.... Hero x

  • bravo

  • Thanks a lot! Good video.

  • Thanks a lot!

  • You made removing the metal top part look so easy. I can't get the metal top to shift however much I press the button and lever it. How on earth do I get it off ?

  • Thanks it heleped

  • Very helpful video:-)

  • Thanks mate.

Prior to watching your video, I didn't which part to pull.

It's knowledge like this that give us a chance to survive independently in a world dominated by giant cooperations. Thank you.

  • Hi, I am from Argentina and my used Passat came with one key, so I asked to a few dealers about the cost of it, and they told me about 500 dollars. I have the chance of buying one on a web site of my country for only 63. The question is, could this key be programmed to my Passat?

    Many Thanks

  • Many thanks for showing us how to change the battery in the Passat key. I couldn't believe I needed to go to the VW dealer to have the battery changed in a key!! You made my day ;-)

  • You're awesome! Thanks for sharing.

  • very helpfull.. Thanks

  • Thanks very much for this demonstration. It will come handy one day.

  • thank you so much for posting this video my remote stopped working and vw wanted to charge me £85 to investigate ? then possibly another £60 to reprogramme a new remote which in itself was £105. Cant believe how much vw would charge for such a simple job. Have saved this as one of my favourites in case it ever happens again. Thanks again

  • Many thanks, really helpfull.

  • The key has a rolling code. If pressed to often out of range of the car, it no longer works. This is by design to prevent someone finding keys from locating the car by repeated pressing whilst walking around a car park. People fall foul of it occasionally when the keys are in a handbag etc.

  • The car will ignore the key fob? I don't understand why it would?

  • This was great - really helpful, thank you.

  • This key type is also used in other newer VW cars.
