The Roots blower is definitely it. I have to use a strong leaf blower for my 1000B single tone sirenhead and although yours is two-tone, it's the gargling growl that the roots gives it. Nice!
no not at all i love the sound but when the federal thnderbolt used for the tornado alarm goes off in my small town it scares the hell out of me...lol
I believe so. It's the larger of the two types I've seen, and is mounted with the intake on top. (The B & C, I think, are mounted vertically so the intake is on the side.)
IM posting a video tommorow that is about a 2t22 siren that sounds very malfuctioned and in poor condition. this footage was from the Documentry that KATV Channel 7 (ABC Affilate) in Little Rock, Arkansas did in 2005 called: 'StormAlert 7 2005'. Hope all of you can enjoy it.
there's nothing that'll stand the hair on the back of yer neck quicker than hearing one of these things in tornado country when there's nowhere to hide
The sound actually comes from a chopper wheel (A spinning wheel with holes in it, produces a whistling noise). This type of siren is unique because it is known as a supercharged siren. The roots blower is at the bottom, the chopper wheel and horn are at the top. If you look it up on wikipedia it'll explain alot.

SHIT SHIT SHIT THE JAPANEASE ARE ATTACKING!!!!! HIT THE DECKS! lol very nice very loud. distortion of sound is incredible due to volume. tell me when you get more!!!!!!
THANKS :) The sound of that roar growing and fading really makes the hairs on my neck stand up. That really is an awesome sound. I'll never take the sound of a Thunderbolt lightly. That is the 2-tone chopper, correct?
I've seen his T-bolt in person, it's a two tone chopper but on a single tone stator. He has another one stored in the barn at his ranch but it requires 3-phase power, that one has the two tone stator but a single tone chopper.
Kx250rider, I posted the video response I took the day I visited and helped you fix the rotator. Anyway, remember that transformer in the lower right of the electrical cabinet I pointed out with taps from 1-7. I was wondering if you could try changing the pitch of the siren for the upcoming Augest test. Think of a variac with wires you have to connect to different points on the transformer windings vs turning the knob.
Thanks for asking... The blower pushes the air up through the pipe, and then it goes through the chopper, which is in the big cylinder at the back of the horn (not shown in this video). The chopper is a drum with two rows of square holes, which by interrupting the air as the chopper spins, make the sound. Smaller sirens have vanes built into the chopper wheel to pull some air through, but the Thunderbolt is so much louder with the big Roots blower.
i put together a thunderbolt blower with a 5.7 leiter chrysler motor and hooked the blower up to the timing belt pulley and the rev limter on that motor is @6000. but i had to flip it off. i took the rev limiter off and guess what, it overheated and it seizes! i finally start it again and i blow it up. it still made 8076 rpm and 1300 horses!
I got it from another siren collector in Wisconsin earlier this year, and brought it home to California. In the next year, I'll do a paint & sheet metal restoration on it.
It's hard to tell on this video, but the motor is turning at 1725rpm, and since the roots blower itself has a smaller diameter pulley, its spinning at over 2000rpm (est).
@TLusa dude. these blowers are 252 CFM at 9 PSI. plus you don't remove the vintage original blower.

nah, thunderbolts didn't protect jews from nazi air raids now did they?
contentlocked99 3 years ago
That's because thunderbolts weren't manufactured in Europe. I'll bet if they were, that's what they would do.
