30 mile range on 5 gallons, thats like 6mpg at best lol =( still cool and i guess if i had 100k to buy one i wouldnt be too worried bout gas prices... shit, i would fly that shit to work everyday!!
Maybe this should have a safe altitude sensor on public use models. Because there is only a 5 gallon tank. So like the lower the tank you have left the lower altitude it will recommended.
You better keep all eyes on that gas meter. Run out of gas and you've literally run out of time. And don't get caught in a storm. All that cross drafted wind will literally give you a ride you'll never forget. Not like falling off a horse and getting back on folks. Horses don't gallop at 8,000 feet.
Very doubtful...especially if the whole 'electric car' business begins to thrive, which, it is beginning to. Also, they need an alternative fuel source to compete with the cars. Though I'm staying optimistic overall, I doubt it will become as mainstream as the developers had hoped...especially at a price of $100,000...when you can buy a reliable car for less than $15000.
Unfortunately this appears to be a ground effect machine. Maximum altitude about 5 feet. If you disagree, please post video of this machine flying at at higher altitude. I would love to be wrong about this.
nah ur right man. and even more so. from what i hear he had nothing but problems at oshkosh and never actually did anything more than what you see here.
as long they hang on to it or flying inside a hall, I won't believe it that its serious, go outside go up some 100s of feet.up and some miles along ,do a figure of 8 and come back, whats holding you back???
Ya if this got big, and everyone used them for travel, we will see what happens when sum1 cuts me off, "oops, accidentally threw a pipe in ur blades, have a good fall! :)
Cell phones and etc.I remember not to long ago my brother had a "pager" and that was the shit... and he had a "cd player" .. now you hardly see anyone with cd players or pagers.. it just takes a few years to get broken in
When this hits the market, wait 10 years and everyone will have one - which will be even more efficient. Think of computers, cell phones and stuff, this could be the next great thing!
Wow this is exciting stuff... so maybe in 5 years they will make these things smaller, lighter, going further on less gas and for half the price like 50K? Then we're talking!
What if one engine goes out or broken fan(prop). Ya ever blow up a balloon and the let it go without tieing it. And even if ya had a reserve it would get sucked in to the fan.
I have to agree with you blacklite911. The original Rocketbelts/Jetpacks fit nicely on your back have almost no moving parts that can fail in flight! They are small and manageable and can even fit in the trunk of a car! It's been 40+yrs. since they were invented and they still have a 100% safety record. They hold speed, height and distance records They can fly higher and faster than this mechanically complicated contraption ever will. I pity the fool who has this 250lb. widowmaker land on him.
It looked pretty light-weight? I dont think it did. I dont think it sounds like a motorcycle, either. Hope a lot of rich douchebags buy these and kill themselves trying to fly them.
@brandonman94 Well it can go 30 miles in 30 minutes on a 5 gallon tank of gas. With the prices of gas today, that's around let's say 17 dollars. It only gets around 6 miles per gallon, but hey that's not bad for fighting against gravity. Although the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide may be more efficient, this thing would still be fun to drive and is cheaper than the $250,000 pricetag on those models which typically get under a minute of air time only and can't lift as much as Martin's can :-)
you are an idiot. they SAID it goes 30 miles or 30 minutes on 5 gallons of gas, so where i live that is 1.70. thats 8.50 per tank to FLY. how is that inefficient?
Other than the unfortunate voice-over, this video is intriguing. Is there no way of talking about a Jet Pack without having to hear a reference to Superman? Still, cool invention from a New Zealander. I'd like to see the experiment without the two assistants holding onto it :P
Here's a little more info about this demonstration:
They were originally going to do an unguided flight, going up into the air. However, the pilot pulled out at the last minute, so Glenn Martin's son did the demonstration. However, he had not flown that particular model before, so for safety reasons he only did a guided hover.
well thats good for higher altitudes but what else is there for anything under the required height for a parachute? im just thinking of the problems that would need to be covered
It's a ballistic parachute, so it's up extremely fast and is quite small. However, in the extreme case that it doesn't get the parachute up before you hit the ground, it's got a thing they call the "pogo stick" which is basically a shock absorber (you can see it in this video).
Pretty much, if you're high up you've got the parachute. If you're low down, you've got the shock absorber.
I want to see this thing working in untethered flight. We all see stuff like this and flying cars for example hovering in place, tethered, never in actually flying.
Id love one but they must be pretty dangerous if you fall e.t.c. and cannot open a parashute. And logistically its hard to navigate around a built up area :/
NZ do shit proply, look at john britten burt Monroe Bruce Mclaren Richard Pearse Owned, And yes this go's to 8000 feet and can handle strong winds its revolutionary for what it is.
