  • 1965-1995? Seriously?

Traffic was already horrible by the late 70s. The good old days would be the 60s and early to mid 70s.

  • Mel Pennington is my grandfather! Love this song! Thank you for remembering him!

  • I wish things were still like this.

  • Girls at Barton Springs should have been topless. Should have mentioned Mother Earth, Vulcan Gas, the Whitehouse and Oat Willies, Freelands, the original Stallion and Moore Burger, the One Knite, New Orleans, Clubbfoot, Big Gil’s, Mooon on the Hill, Bag End, the Sandwich Shop on 6th St., Liberty Lunch, Sids, Hills, Picadilly, Raul's, Pure Foods, Safer Way, the Hiching Post, Aquafest with the sports car races around the Auditorium .....Ah hell....... they are all gone now...

  • I miss the old Airport i used to live by highland mall and the neighbor hood was right on the flight path, the house used to shake every time a DC-10 would take off !!

  • Great walk down memory lane, but didn't see the Vulcan Gas Co., where I spent many nights listening to Shiva's Headband and other great bands! The light bulb joke is so true...the best part about the growth in Austin is that we now have so many more restaurant choices, but the traffic really sucks.

  • Skipper pins. I haven't thought of those in years!

  • Wow, got choked up watching my childhood pass by.

  • This needs to be saved for Austin history....

  • I miss the old drive-in @ ben white & i-35 where the walmart is now ,Jim's , Woolworth 6th&congress northwest corner

  • I miss The Stallion on N. Lamar!

  • For what it's worth---Darrell Royal says that opinions are like noses, that everyone has one. Of course this was a clean version of a rather crude remark. If you feel the point of this comment is pointed towards you----it probably is.

  • I've come & gone 5 times over the years & I'm here to stay. First time was as a freshman the day Whitman was in the tower. Got my Masters @ UT & went home to float away in the Memorial Day flood of '81. Spent many daze @ the 'Dillo, Soap Creek, Liberty, etc. Built Austin's first dome out in Oak Hill in the early 70s & floated many summers @ Hippy Hollow. Guess floating pretty much describes those years. What a great place to live while floating thru life. Michael mguess@austin.rr.com

  • @TradeSafe Great post, TradeSafe. I've also enjoyed reading how other people have such strong, affectionate memories of Austin. I don't live in Austin now, but I sure cherish the time I did.

  • Don't forget The Pop Shop, Gibson's Handy Dan, Woolworth, Kmart, Bonanza and Sirlion Stockade (Before buffet) Resturants, El Torito, Safeway, low-water crossings.. What I remember from the late 70'-'86

  • I've only been here in Austin for thirty some years or so, but it still gives me a boner.

  • Great images. Truly enjoyed seeing them. I recognize this music. The tune is a rip off from an old cowboy song called "When The Work's All Done This Fall." It is actually a good song.

  • Nice job! How about giving copy on CD to Austin History Center for archival preservation?

  • @karolmiddleton If you send me an inbox email with a contact and address and I will send a DVD of the music video. Mary

  • My family has been here since 1836 (Battle of San Jacinto). I'm either 7th or 8th generation Austinite, so you can't get more Austin than me. I loved the video except for the music. I wish some 'normal' music had been used. I don't listen to C&W and nobody in my family ever has either. Most people do not connect Austin with C&W music, so why not use some better music?

  • @hound51 Sometimes it's ok to leave your opinions to yourself. Just a thought.

  • That was cool, but possibly the worst song I've ever heard.

  • Austin has too many Liberals in it now. No real Texan could be a Liberal.

  • @Bumper776 hey I can tell you've not been paying attention, because Austin has ALWAYS been majority Democrat since the Civil War 1865. Look it up. Travis County has NEVER voted Republifux since 1865 for a presidential candidate. Been majority Democrat/liberal.forever. Thank goodness.

Voila, the old saying that 'Austin is an oasis of liberal thought in a desert of conservatism' [rest of Texas]. Try to keep up.

  • Interesting that Barton Springs hasn't changed a bit. Only the one piece bathing suits and hair gave it away.

  • Why would I go anywhere? I'm already here.

  • You're breaking my heart.

  • Thanks for sharing this; it really brought back memories. I'll probably play it a few more times to get the most out of it. Those photos are so on target and the song...well, that is quite amazing also.

  • Remember when no building in the downtown area could be taller than our State Capitol!!!

  • Wow!!!!! I loved the video. Sweet, wonderful, funny, great memories!!!! We were all blessed to experience such great times!

  • lived in Austin since 1966 at age of 12,,,still live there 46 years later,,,Oh the memories this video brings back,,,terrific,,,,Robert class of ' 72 Crockett High

  • Worked at the Villa Capri for 3 years. Great job on the composition. Wish they could have gotten a snapshot of "The Stallion" on North Lamar - incredible chicken fried steaks for cheap for years.

  • Born in 1935 at Brackenridge Hospital. "Old" Austin isn't 1965-1995. Graduated from Austin High School in 1953. Relatives in and all around Austin, Liberty Hill, Spicewood, Burnet, Marble Falls. Who remembers Renck Springs , now Krause Springs ? Been there , done that , most of the things mentioned in the video and or comments. Still a beautiful city

  • Great video of the good old days. Reminds me of a joke: Q. How many native Austinites does

it take to change a light bulb? A. 5 - one to change the bulb and 4 to tell you how much better

    the old bulb was.

  • I was born in El Paso in 1944 and have spent my entire life here and never been sorry about that. Recently there have been some changes in the way local govt. behaves that I sorely disapprove of. However, my vote will speak to that. A true blue proud Texan, I love this state.

  • Great video, like others here, I have lived my entire life here since the early 50's. Been to

many places in the video, and watched Austin change so much. Great to watch, and

    step back in time.

  • I was born and raised in Austin and now live in Australia. Sure did bring a tear to my eye. Thanks to my wonderful friend Barb for sending me this link Fantastic video! kkwells

  • Pretty much covered it... but what about the Chicken Shack? I know you can't cover 'em all, but worth mentioning the original Mother Earth (on Lamar). Armadillo made it in the song and rightfully so, that place personified Austin. Ahhhh, good times.

  • I was born in Austin in 1945 and remember all of these places. I went to Austin High (class of '63) and moved after I divorced in '68. I went through the tower shootings, remember Dirty Martin's, Pig Stand, Barton Spring and my family and I ate at El Rancho at least once a week and were friends of Matt's. I was on the Uncle Jay show and dad had a TV show and was close personal friends with Cactus, Jay, Jack and countless others . He had a band and played all over town. I miss those days.

  • Really a video about Austin recorded and engineered in HOUSTON?? Shame shame shame. Next time please use the local home grown studios if possible please.

  • awesome blast from the past. THANK YOU!! - old austin hippie chic and sub armadillo waitress.

  • It's not forever lost...I still remember.

  • A real look-back to a past that is forever lost to us.

  • @marygeil830 Hi Mary, thanks for that. (it would have been nice if bro in law said howdy and a tip of the hat before he took photos) I'm overall pleased to be a part of the video, because old Austin (and the Americana) meant a lot to me... it's just hard these days to protect what happens to the pix we post on line. Thank you very much for your response and your hard work in putting this vid together.... great song too! I bet we were standing in the same line that day!!

  • ...Remember getting busted in front of the Co-Op for selling Salvation Sandwiches in "72. Skinny dipping in Barton Creek with the DPS helicopter searching for offenders. Being the only sail on Travis...

  • Nice to see some of what I grew up with memorialized. I've lived here from the ripe age of 'just born' in 1977, can't seem to leave even if most of the things I remember are long gone, and the feel of the city has changed so very much since then. Cheers y'all, thanks for makin' this and thanks to my mom for emailing me the link.

  • I toured the Butter Krust Bakery!!!

  • Just wanted to mention that I spent only a short time in Austin (1958-1961), when I attended McCallum H.S. I don't remember a lot about Austin, but I did recognize many of the pictures. I also remember spending many hours listening to KOKE and KNOW, and now and then I've thought about Cactus Prior. Many items I did not recognize or remember, partly because they didn't come into existence until after I was there. Thanks for sharing it, and thanks to my friend Katie for emailing this to me.

  • What about Liberty Lunch? The Tavern? The Raw Deal and ANOTHER Raw Deal? Bowl-O-Rama? Kress?

  • What? No mention of Sandy's Hamburgers? The Brown Bag BBQ? The Rebel Drive in?

  • Wow, I love this! I was also on Uncle Jay (circa 1973 or 74), worked at Joske's, danced to Willie Nelson at the Dillo (loved the giant cookies!), swam at Hippie Hollow, spent many hot summer days at Barton Springs, etc. I remember all of this! Enchiladas at Dart Bowl should've been mentioned... and Christies. I've been an Austinite since I was a toddler in 1967 and still love it here... :)

  • That is my father's place (Hector's Taco Flats) mentioned at 0:26. He actually started the jalapeno eating contests way back in the day. Glad to see they are still around.

  • @ClubRegistration Please get back with me ... James Davis help build the "face" to Taco Flats and he so wants to contact your dad!!! My name is Cindy Ray. Email is sasmol@aol.col.com Much appreciated!!!

  • @ClubRegistration, I absolutely loved your Dad. I remember the original place, before the expansion, just a tiny shack. I'd tell you some stories only it would get both of us in trouble :-). Wonderful, wonderful person!

  • Wow I was on Uncle Jay and pulled packer jacks beard. Monster cookies and beans and rice at the Dillo. Cured those cosmic munchies!

  • Do ya'll remember Christie's Seafood? This was fun and awesome!

  • I nearly started crying while I watched this...

  • @DonnaCase66 yes i'm not going to lie my eyes started to get a little watery watching this.

  • El Rancho is still here! Just moved to a bigger, better location on South Lamar. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

  • "I like it, I love it...I want some more of it!" I miss AWESOME AUSTIN from the 'Good Ole' Days'!

  • Great memories, yes. Good work. But Austin today is a vastly more interesting & creative place, despite the traffic and high prices.

  • But the best part was "El Rancho" ! Long gone :(

  • @josecuervogold1800

    i'm with ya, Jose!

  • @zzblaine I remember the Americana Theater in Austin. I think it was the last single theater auditorium during the last part of its existence.

  • @jaytlr9

It was a great theater, jaytir9, I stood in the line around the building for the first Star Wars movie, and many others... my faves in Austin were The Varsity, the Americana and Dobie.

  • What great memories !!

  • Excellent! It is mostly gone now..Paved over.

  • Commendable piece !!! and it must have been very tough to decide which to include ...

  • What about the LAI, Lake Austin Inn?

  • Delicious! Brought a tear to my eye.

  • THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS WITH ME...ALL OF US!! I HAVE THE BIGGEST GRIN BECAUSE I'VE BEEN TO EVERYONE OF THOSE PLACES!!!

  • I've been here since I was born in the mid-forties. What's funny is that in the late sixties, there were people saying that Austin was "getting too big to suit them."

  • Oh yeah..as one of the KOKE-FM DJ's during the 70's, I managed to frequent most of the places in the video. Joe Gracey..RIP. After my bartending shift at Mike n' Charlies..I would stop by the Pizza place around the corner to hear Stevie Ray..playing for tip's at the door. I even sang with "Steam Heat" at the AWHeadquarters one night! Austin is not the same..but, nothing is. Great memories..thanks for sharing!

  • Does anyone know if Hector from Taco Flats is still alive? He was a buddy of mine in the late 70's.

  • @MrSlowkid

Had many a good taco and warm beer there, cheap!! Taco Flats and The Stallion kept me alive!

  • @MrSlowkid Yes he is still around and kicking. Email me at calvarado312@gmail.com for contact info.

  • I am so happy that I got to be a part of these memories. They are the very best! Did he forget Mount Bonnel???? I made enough money bringing Coors to Austin from home to join a sorority!! And I remember sipping on a cold beer while changing the scores behind the scoreboard on the baseball field!!!! Loved Bonny and Bill at the Split Rail and my forever friend Rusty Weir!! The only time I remember dancing on a table was at the Villa Capri when Willie and Waylon were playing at a wedding. WOW!

  • @JRSHERMANTX Thanks for posting these memories. I enjoyed reading them.

  • I wonder what they'll sing about Austin in 40 years.

  • Taco Flats! There was a mousetrap on the wall with the label "Fresh meat daily".

  • @pmwidener

    Loved that!

  • THANKS!

  • Oh how I miss the old days. Remember when my neighbor and I would ride the bus from North Austin to downtown to the movies at the State or Paramount when we were around 12 or 13. Kids can't do that now days. When I graduated from H.S. in 1960, Austin's population was only 121,000.

  • At 1:06, that's me! And my little brother. We were seeing my dad off to Spain at the airport. Probably about 1969. My mom took the picture.

  • @aepow1956 Lucky you got in the vid!

  • this is the Austin i love. it's a shame what it has become. *sigh*

  • I remeber all of that!

  • Love this..Great memories....Thanks for including my Dad....Mel Pennington....He so loved Austin....Good music, vocals....video...LP

  • @028sammi I do remember Mel. He was the face of Austin for quite some time!

  • What great memories!!!! I miss those days...

  • Thanks for posting!! That was a simpler, time when people, could actually be peaceful, and friendly. Really a sweet, video!!

  • Just about all of these are gone now, Thanks so much for posting! My old aunt Emily would of loved this video...god rest her soul.

  • Nice, being from San Antonio, I think of Austin as my beloved second home. I didn't know you guys had an old Butter Krust plant like we did. Cool video.

  • WOW!! Now I have a tear in my eye...

  • LOVE IT!

  • Love this ! Although it sure would have been nice to have Joyce Isaacs along with Mel Pennington.

  • OMG!! Takes my breath away with all these memories flooding in! THANK YOU.

  • Gregg, thank you so much for bringing back so many wonderful memories. Its a lovely walk down memory lane.

    Gloria
