  • love this drum solo, one of the unsung great drummers here, kenney jones

  • Kenney's great just not very creative

  • @zenlee1109 No one knocks Kenney in my presense. No one. I'm a NYC guy and I will strangle you with your grandmothers scarf in front of your daughter before I allow you to knock my boy Kenney. Understand?

  • There,s nothing wrong with Kenny, check out the early faces albums , nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse , every picture tells a story , class !

  • a great drum solo, a good drummer no doubt and very skilled, but the problem with kenney was that he played too predictably with them! If he played with them the way he played here in this solo he would've been a perfect fit...

  • gnl he kept the bass goin the whole time

  • incredible drummer and totally underrated! Personally, I love his drumming on both Who CD and he proved himself one of the most important British drummers of the mod scene. He is a definite influence!

  • ...and Roger Daltrey wanted him kicked out of The Who? Hmmmmm.....

  • When Kenny joined the who., he played it the only way it could have been played IE he played it straight. The job he did with the who could not have been done better by anyone. I hope the time has come for kenny to get the respect he deserves. The other members of the who stood by while Moon slowly killed him self & then went on a guilt trip & shat on kenny.

BTW Im a huge moon fan, moon was original & unique, however he lost it after about 73. Zaks doing great but kenny was a lightining rod

  • Kenny is a good, solid drummer but was always very wrong for The Who. His playing was ostly very stiff with them either live or in the studio. He did have some good moments. I'm not knocking the guy - he's a good drummer. Just went with the wrong band.

  • @stevedrums Pete Townsend said on his website a month or two ago that he always thought Kenney was a better drummer than Moon and he would have preferred to have had him in the band instead of Moonie from the beginning.

  • @Diceydee Not sure of the context in which he said it, but had that been the case then it wouldn't have been The Who.

  • @stevedrums I can't link it here, and the wiki link is dead, but I can tell you it was very straightforward. He said Kenney was better and he wished he'd been the Who's drummer from the beginning. I'm sure you can find the entire post. Sure, the Who would have been different without Moonie, but in Pete's opinion, they would have been better. Myself, I think Kenney is a grossly underrated drummer and he's still going strong. See his Cindy Incidently solo from the Faces reunion this month.

  • @Diceydee right then...the who even speciffically that with any other drummer, they would have been terrible...

  • who was the iron butterfly drummer?

  • I have always loved Kenny and think He is so uderrated as a drummer. One of my all time Heros.

  • Pretty good. I liked it.

  • The Law need I say more?

  • To replace Moon you gotta be awesome and that Kenney is as is The Who and Faces

  • This is a great solo.Love it.Not boring at all like some solos you hear.

  • Amazing! Realy glad you posted this. I've loved Kenney Jones drumming since The Faces. He is sooooo musical and unique. The way he works off the kick drum! This was a geat solo from it's time but I didn't know there was ever a video of it. Really unique.. and hard to play well. I'm not sure why people need to compare him to Keith Moon. What's the point? Just enjoy them all!

  • Happy birthday Kenney!

  • In all fairness, moon impossible to replace but you do give it up to kenny jones great instincts as a percussionist, very buddy rich esque,!

  • If you think is nostalgic of Buddy Rich, then you have never heard Buddy Rich play.

  • No way dude,Keith was pretty crap at solo's! This is just as good as any Moon solo, although you'll be lucky to find one! Kenney rules OK!

  • Comment removed

  • Thats wicked!!

  • MAN!!!! This is AMAZING! It's people like this who make me want to learn how to play the drums. I always wanted to, but I learned the flute anyways. I know.... polar opposites.

  • Very musical solo , nice dynamics and phrasing he's showing us he's more than just 4/4 player . I think it's better to see it as part of the whole song though, you see him go in and out of the solo . Kenny is a monster ! He shouldn't be judged by comparing him with Moon ,Keith played in a totally unique way for the time ,rolling around the toms smashing his cymbals where as Kenny was more straightforward in his approach .If he had tried aping Moons style he would have been criticized even more

  • superangelfire, a vision of lovliness......

  • I like that comment below me.

  • He was treated like dirt by Roger Daltrey. He's a good drummer. No one could fill moonies's place...but he stepped up to the plate and got shit on royally for it...undesevedly so.

  • I agree..it took a lot of guts from him to step into the shoes of a drummer so legendary and loved by many, and did the best job he could do. He always said in interviews that he never though of himself as Keith's replacement, that he was just a fill in.

Daltrey did treat him like shit, that's for sure. When they got back together to tour in 89, Roger supposedly refused to tour if Kenney was involved, he supposedly told Pete Townsend, "It's either him or me"

  • That's exactly what happened...and Kenney Jones has always maintained his dignity.

  • Isn't that the truth? I mean the two albums he played on with The Who aren't bad albums. And he played great on the 79 Tour. I think what happened was he just got more comfortable with his role in the band and maybe felt like he didn't have to prove anything anymore. He got royally shit on by Daltrey and because of him, they were able to crank out another 4 years. I love The Who, but I just can't bring myself to watching them now without Entwistle.

  • I was living in Las Vegas and had tickets for The Who, when John Entwistle died...it broke my heart...I saw their rescheduled show with Pino Palladino..but the wind was knocked out of my sails permanently.

  • I bet it would. Palladino is a good musician in his own right, but without John Entwistle, that band should not be called The Who, plain and simple. I listened to Endless Wire, and it sorely lacked his bass playing. I was offered to see them in Philly in 2006 with Peeping Tom, who I also wanted to see, but I just refuse to see them without him. The Who died when Entwistle passed in my opinion.

Nice to hear from a fellow Who fan! : )

  • Kenny Jones is a good, solid drummer who should have never been in The Who. That being said, he did play songs like "One At A Time", "Cooks County", and even "Another Tricky Day" with some intensity. Good for The Faces. bad for The Who.

  • Kenny Jones> Keith Moon

    Jk

  • That kit sounds KILLER!

    I loved FACE DANCES too.

Kenny played great drum PARTS, unlike Kieth who just wailed on everything. I enjoyed Kenny's work with The Who.

  • It's very controversial to determine whether or not Kenny Jones was a good replacement for Keith Moon, but I guess he's an excellent drummer and he did his best during his tenure with The Who

  • Great drummer Kenny jones.... : )

  • Go Kenney, Go! This solo is so awesome and what an amazing version of the Temptations song. The Faces are one of the greatest bands and Kenney Jones is one of the greatest drummers.

  • its from sounds for saturday.a series on bbc in the early seventies. awesome gig. faces at there very best. there aint no better

  • where it's taken from?

  • 9/16/1948 Happy Birthday Kenney Jones!

  • As someone said in an earlier post save that comment for a Who video, this is the Faces.

  • awesom drumming

    completly underatted

one of the best drummers of all time

  • very skilled drummer. just not right for the who

  • why did everyone low rate this comment? hes a good drummer but in my opinion the who shouldve picked soemone else to replace keith. though no one could fill that spot correctly...

  • wtf? i said hes a very skilled drummer. there was no one but moonie who was right for the who, not kenney, not simon or zak. you have to be a whofan to understand

  • ...and you have to understand that by the time Kenney joined the Who they were already geriatrics! Old folks so to say! As a member of the Who Kenney never played above 50 percent of his drumskills!

  • Yeah, during his time in the Who, this kind of awesome, amazing talent never really showed up in the songs themselves like they did with Keith and, sometimes, Zak. The beats were much more basic, he wasn't achieving his full potential like Keith did.

  • LMAO! is Woody falling off the stage on the left about one minute into the solo?? you can hear him scream! LOL

  • i think it's stupid that people hate just for joining the who. Listen to "You Better You Bet", he plays really well in that song. To me, KJ didn't bring down the who - KM's death did.

Great solo too! I had heard of the faces before today, but never listened to them. I saw them on tv, and WOW! They're amazing!

  • AGREE!

  • Great drummer, great for the Faces. But wrong for the Who. The reason Kenney didn't gel with the Who was because, as a drummer, he was too predictable and straight. Zak isn't Keith Moon, but he can mind-read Townshend and go wherever Pete goes musically, and vice-versa. Kenney was never like that and unfairly got the rap for The Who's demise in the early 80s. Daltrey's comments about Kenney have never helped either. It's "Pete Best" all over again.....

  • i feel the same way, but i just bought a bootleg copy of the chicago show of the who in 1979 and he's actually pretty amazing in that. its just sad that the whole band slowly went downhill for that period

  • I honestly think Townshend's getting sober and switching to those Schectner guitar contributed to the demise. Oh yeah, and the loss of th Hiwatts. Compare Pete's drunk 81 shows to the sober 82 shows and you'll understand what I'm getting at.

  • oh definetly. i agree completely. it was the result of 1. the bands lack of interest 2. kenney 3. petes depression 4. petes choices in guitar/style 5. drugs 6. the fact that rock music was losing its popularity 7. moons death. 8. the press 9. they were getting older, and couldnt gig with the same energy they used to have night after night 10. loss of their originality so on and so forth. they could still rock, but only on a good night. am i right?
  • I just watched my bootleg of the 1981 Essen Show and they were on fire. The Who of 79-81 still had quite a bit of raw fire (79 in particularly). 1982 was just sterile. They all seemed to be punching the clock (for the most part). I have the bootleg DVD of 1982 Seattle and Pete just seems miserable. Very little on stage chemistry compared to 79-81. I think it must have been hard for Kenney. I also think his white Premier's sounded better than the big double bass 82 black Premier kit.

  • I Don't understand why Kenny got such a bum rap when he played for The Who. I'm a drummer myself and I always thought he was solid and very tight. I wish he was still playing with the Who. I don't care for their drummer now at all.

  • I don't think anyone thinks that he is a bad drummer, hes amazing just not a great drummer for the who. I thought he was pretty good for a lot of the '79 footage that I've seen though. And Zak Starkey is awesome, definitely a better fit for the who.

  • Zak Starky is nothing special, I've seen him in a drum workshop. Simon Phillips was something special and I'd take hime any day over zak.

  • dig this krupa passed him up with his ideas in 1937 how about something better for the 1970s gene please come back we need you

  • Thank You BonhanWorshiper!!! Kenney Jones is incredible

  • He's an ok little pocket drummer--if that's your thing. I wish they would have got Clem Burke back then...the drummer from Blondie...anyone with me on that?

  • Thank you Bonham worshiper

  • Incredible drummer.

  • This is the Faces, dumbass.

  • Fantastic drummer. Although this sounded good-it certainly isnt an example of his best. Those maple Ludwigs sound killer-and like Bonham and others, Kennys drums ALWAYS sounded the same with the Faces. Hes definately underrated

  • He's an excellent drummer; very underrated

  • Very underrated

  • @rs6928 Very underrated, agree. Kenney is a great drummer and has played with fantastic bands since he was 16 years old in the Small Faces. Not a household name, though, probably because he is so quiet and unassuming. The anti-Keith Moon in many respects.

  • He should have stayed with the Faces; he was a better fit with them.

  • Brilliant,i've seen this loads of times, would rather watch this than Moby Dick! Much more entertaining I.M.O

  • ONE OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS
