Winning is paramount in sport at highest level, so tactics important, this is why Italy successful. If Italy came out and attacked for 90 minutes instead of winning 4-0 they would probably lose 2-3 or worse. Germany and France are talented as well! as a coach you should know this. i was a hockey player but the sports are comparable.
Also I don't agree that Italy football is as negative as you infer it is. I would say this might be true 25- 30 years ago with catenaccio. I think Italy play fairly attractive football, at least from what I saw in WC 2006. no team really impressed me. The players today are bigger' stronger, faster, with such a fast play that goals come at a premium for everyone, and EVERYONE plays good defense, so its difficult to score. France with such talent failed to score from action in semi and final.
I watch Serie A and I have to say that I don't find it as entertaining as the Premier! The only reason for that is that the premier is played at a faster pace!
