  • Do any Americans ever come on YouTube? To say somebody "owns" something, means they do the best version. Not that they actually "own" it. What is your first language, you stupid motherfuckers?

  • @peterzang - English motherfucker, do you speak it? See I'm from England, we speak English (makes sense right?!?!) Whereas you are from America and it seems you speak pure horse shit. It's not your fault though, lack of education can usually be accredited to poor parenting. Which cereal packet did you get your "rock scholarship" from?!? lmfao

  • @YippeKiYayMotherFkr Yeah, I'm really gonna continue this. A Fucking screen name from a Bruce Willis movie? You're clearly a man of wealth, brains and taste. One more example, Otis Redding wrote Respect, but Aretha 'owns' the song. Get it? My British friends are usually so smart. What happened to you? Don't they tutor you in HMP?

  • @peterzang - Strange that because every American I've ever met is a bit thick, terribly ignorant with an over inflated sense of self worth. It's a shame you live up to that standard too. I guess that'd be too much to ask from an ignorant 'rock scholar' and judging by your previous comments you are obviously only here to try and get a reaction from people by posting stupid comments, ergo you are a troll.

  • Hands down, the best version of this song....

  • Love this so much :)

  • Is a gladrag what i think it is?

  • @gscortez isn't it fancy (slutty) clothes?

  • Rod Stewart best singer alive i think that the steriophonics just killed this song with their version :)

  • Rodrick. Just freaki' incredible. No other voice can ever compare.

  • The best there is and will ever be. Most don't know he writes most of his songs, and they all tell a story. I met Penny and her dad at show. What wonderful people. God Bless Each of Them Always. I AM TRULY YOUR #1 FAN!!!

  • I just noticed how much this reminds me of Let it Loose.

  • 4 people meant to press 'dis i like'

  • @Tonyhibbs oh ho you clever bastard

  • great version, but i still prefer the stereophonics one.

but they are both unique as they both represent different times they were done in.

  • @serbdetritus182 Oh come on! How old are you? 10? His preceded theirs by DECADES. And they do it note-for-note. How old are you? Stewart cut this song in 1970 and OWNS IT. That just too fucking stupid to believe.

  • @peterzang Actually Mike d'Abo,who wrote it "OWNS IT" but i do agree that Rod's version is the Best.

  • @peterzang - Mike d'Abo owns this, you'd think someone who is so quick to jump on other peoples comments would make sure they didn't put down completely false information. Oops, now you look like a complete moron. Try using Google to check your facts before making a tit of yourself in future.

  • @YippeKiYayMotherFkr When I say "owns" I mean does the definitive version. There isn't a rock scholar alive (I happen to be one) who doesn't know that. Try getting a life. You actually took time to write this?

Mike Diabo wrote it, dude, but his version is just okay. Jesus.

  • those 4 people that didnt like this jam put back on your beiber music and just b a bitch

  • 4 People Meant to hit the "Like" tab. ........

  • I'm sorry, but I'd SO love to hear American Idol's Paul McDonald sing this song instead of Maggie Mae. I LOVE this song. He would like to sing a song that had wonderful layers of tune, layers of poetry. Something people hear and never forget. This is a beautiful song.

  • Listening to these lyrics reminds me of my grandpa's story of his life during the depression of the 1930s. His dad left his mom, so my grandpa had to leave school at 13 to earn money for his mom, brothers and sister. He rode his bicycle to work in all kinds of weather -- rain, cold, snow. I think of the hardship they had to endure and I gained great respect for my grandpa after hearing those stories.

  • Nothing like the ORIGINAL!!! Rod Stewart's version is so much better. And just when you think the song is over, it goes on another few seconds with the beautiful piano riff.

  • The office

  • Rod Stewart. Gentleman extraordinaire, hands down. Thank you. Peace.

  • I <3 Rodrick (a) :)xx

  • I dont normally say this, but the Stereophonics Version is Much better :P

  • @AndrewHeavens08 You've gotta be jokin man. They slowed it down too much. This is how the song should be sung. Trying to sound like Rodders is crap anyway.

  • @veda1954 I'm not saying i don't like this version, but for once I prefer the cover version.

  • @AndrewHeavens08 I always think, if you're going to cover a song, put your own slant on it (see James Taylor sing Witchita Lineman for example). If it wasn't for the original I would like the Steriophonics version, but to me it justs sounds the same only slower. I'd have preferred it if they'd tried to do it differently.

  • Is this D'Abo on piano, or Nicky Hopkins (who this sounds like)?

  • @hooptyhee1 D'Abo (gets to play on his own peerless composition). Hopkins didn't play on on this 1st solo album, but Ian McLagan and Keith Emerson did.

  • Great Music very nice instrumentation, great classic.

  • Great video :-) . Good clean sound for a classic. With all the talk here about performance, let's not forget who wrote it: Mike D'Abo, who was with Manfred Mann at the time. According to Wikipedia, Rod Stewart's version of the song was arranged by d'Abo, who also played piano on the recording (?). To me it defines the song, Rod owns it the way Arlo Guthrie owns City of New Orleans or Glen Campbell owns Galveston, or Elvis all his hits. All written by others.

  • Simply one of the Best By God Songs ever written!

  • it's all about Chase...the original recording

  • shoot down sterophonics if you see them!rod is king!

  • i really like rod stewart's voice. no but rod stewart sounds like him. great great singer!!!!!!!

  • yep

  • THE best version! Nice one, Rod. Sounds like Pete Sears on piano. Am I wrong?

  • didn't know rod recorded this--great job!!

  • stereophonics is miles better!!

  • @pelwag uhh no way man. rod is by far better. his unplugged album i even an even better version of this one

  • @StannMarsh1 Rod is ever soulful, especially in those early post-faces days.

  • @peteyj6 This was actually pre-Faces, post-Jeff Beck I.

  • I love the version of this at the end of The Office UK

  • If you like this song you'll probably like "Let it Loose" by the Rolling Stones

  • 1 sweet song

  • Tim Hardin wrote this I think

  • actually, it was written by Mike D'Abo.

  • You're right....from Manfred Mann. Thanks

  • Pure Excellence.......nothing more

  • i prefer Stereophonics version it sounds much better

  • you are gay

  • this song is old yet soo popular still not just becos its had a cover but its a classic

  • this song is from THE ROD STEWART album circa 1969 0r 70.the band included ron wood, mick waller nicky hopkins and keith emerson.awesome stuff.long before stewart went pop and bubblegum later!

  • love these old, sparse, raw songs oh his from the early '70s like this, 'you wear it well' and, of course, 'maggie may'...didnt discover this gem until i bought his unplugged disc then i sniffed out the original, fantastic!

  • love the way Rod uses his voice to make himself seem old..

This is the better version without a shadow of a doubt!

  • don't care,..just want to here this song,...sorry alll

  • I like Stereophonics version so much better...

  • Stereophonics have no "soul", they try but they're way too shallow; period.

Also, Rod's is a "version" whereas Stereophonic's is but a copy/cover, down to the smallest inflection.

Isn't weird that when Rod cut this track he was probably younger than the 'Phonics, but he already sounds "old", in a good way...?

I guess it's called Real Talent.

  • Stereophonics have alot of talent and are not shallow in the least

  • @BeliefBand. I couldn't agree more, there is a great difference between covering a song (Rod) and simply Xerox-ing one (Stereophonics).

  • The "Stereophonics" version is nice but it's mimicked more than anything... a very nice copy/cover that brings the song to this generation. Still, even with Rod covering it, too. He owns it totally.

  • Love Rod singing anything

  • the piano lyrics and wood wind contermelody fit together so well it's what makes this song work so well.

  • @ Zanaso, I can't agree more.. They produced this perfectly.. I have always been a fan of Rod's, but didn't even know of this older song until maybe 8 years ago! Maybe I didn't pay attention, and I don't remember this getting much radio time at all..Now, it's one of my favorites.

  • The version used on the Office with Ricky Gervais is the best version ever. By Big George

  • @

    matildaandmeontv

I'm dying to get hold of the full edit of Big George's version (as used in the the wonderful The Office).

Anyone has it somewhere? Please share.

  • Rods the man, never tire of him

  • who did it first? rod or stereophonics? there both good tho :)

  • neither. it was written by Mike d'Abo and first released by Chris Farlowe in '67. Rod recorded it '69 (released '70) and Stereophonics released their cover in 2001. in other words, this song predates them by a considerable amount of time. hope this helps!

  • Good, that was very kind from you, it does help, cheers and good luck.

  • Rod Stewart did it in 1969 and Stereophonics did it in 2001

  • who do u think, rod has been around alot longer than stereophonics.

  • recorded a cover of this myself that should be uploaded rather shortly. i actually used the Stereophonics backing track, but sped it up to this speed cos i found it too damn slow =P Rod's is by far the definitive version - popularised the song, influenced later covers and was even arranged by the guy who wrote it.

  • Just listened to the Stereo's version, came off as pretty 'over-produced'... I just love the sound the Faces had.

  • this will always be the best version

  • Origanal and still the best version, anyone know if that Pyton Lee Jackson 2In a broken dream" is on here found oodles of covers but would like to hear Rod's original again.

  • it's actually not the original, it's just considered to be the 'definitive' version

  • Nom it's not the original. That was by Chris Farlowe in 1967. Personally, I think this is better, the original suffering from over-production.

  • how can anyone say the sterophonics version is better when kelly jones changed his voice slightly to make it sounded more like rod stewart

  • @1sadler232 im sorry but stereophonics version is better, more soul in it and it just is better overall, thats just my opinion and obviously im open to others and i also like this version. and kelly jones' voice is different from song to song so that is not really a valid arguement

  • @TheMuayThaiKO the diffrences is that rod stewart is a legend and there NOT

  • @danrees93 which i think is a shame because they are a great band, don't you think you are being a bit OTT?

  • @1sadler232 It's called an opinion.

  • when I saw him in 2000 or '01 he opened the show with this

  • This is the better version with the help of the studio experience and general musical intuition of an established genius.

Stereophonics was a bit too choppy with musicians shirfting instruments mid song and such,.

It seemed disjointed in may ways including the timing overly slow as mentioned below.

  • I like this one better, stereophonics sang it too slow

  • pretty sure they are exactly the same speed, however i do agree with u, prefer this original!

  • this one is about 80bpm

    stereophonics' is 70bpm.

    the lyrics remains great

  • tune and perfect companion theme music to "the office" - the original.. (yeah i know they re recorded it for the show..)

  • Rod.........always an all time favorite.

  • I like Chris Farlowe's version.

  • yep it was stereophonics i think, and i think their version was better

  • which was 'the office' version - rod or steorophonics? or someone else? (the piano chords on this version are sublime - and so are the vocals, of course, rod was one of best blues singers of all time - but i'm not too fond of the excess strings in the middle-eight section...)

  • Rod Stewart is a musical genius.

After he dies and Network TV tells you so,

you might get it, too late.

  • he might be... but he didn't write this song. it's actually by Mike d'Abo. and he wasn't the first to even perform it/get it popular.

  • keep it up rod, thanks ever so much for these good musics.great man

  • I dont like this version, for the type of song it is, it's too fast, and his voice is annoying. :S But the Stereophonices version is the dogs gonads :D

  • but this is one of the original versions, what happen to you, come on man you heard this in our past,....lets share,....

  • i dont like the stereophonics version... his voice doesnt suit the song at all

  • both are great

  • i love this song, reminds me of the office :)

  • Because it's the theme

    Oh, you're probably american

It's the theme to the British one =]]

  • lies

  • Such sarcasm. The height of wit, I believe?

  • - How do you want to be remembered ?

    - Simply as the man who put a smile on the face of everyone he met.

    Classic

  • Just my favorite quote!

  • @robinwiman Perfect end to a perfect series.

  • My favorite Rod Stewart song. Thank you so much for posting this!

  • i'll drink that bottle of rye with rod man stewart, classic, my old drinking song man......
