WMG are idiots and I´ve dealt with them for 12 years. They really believe that we need them more than they need us. Not to worry, they´re going bust and they have no one but themselves to blame.
I would gladly pay for a CD of the brillant soundtrack of this film,
5 bparts in and im still confused. has the apcoplyse already happened and this is the aftermath or has it yet to come and the whole world exploses into nothing at the end of the movie?
@MsHolly30 Well obviously for the Northern Hemisphere it already has come the apocalypse hasn't? Down there their just waiting for it coming as it will, with the radioative cloud.
According to the plotline, fossil fuels were in extreme short supply -- including diesel petrol. Therefore, Australia had to get its older steam powered trains out of mothballs and museums for regular use again. The movie does fail to make this point clear enough.
@hmmmmmmmmm2 you still need a power source to generate heat to boil water to make steam. fossil fuels includes coal and australia has an abundance of coal but it is not equally distributed across the continent and the production of coal requires man power to control the machines that move the coal.
Hey SocratesTheGadfly and Durhandoni80 --- I didn't write the story... I'm just explaining what was written in the novel, but only barely skimmed over in the film. You all need to be complaining to Nevil Shute -- he wrote it.
@KiwiTomCrawford Cose it got nuked and that would be the reality not in this fantasy. For goodness sake China would probably lob a couple of them at Australian cities, if such a nuclear war was to happen. Its relatively nearer than the US and Australia has strong military ties with the US.
On the Beach is book of its time a time before ballistic missiles or wide scale nuclear proliferation, which has made nowhere safe from the direct effects of such a war.
I could not help thinking - It is just like what happening now in Japan. The Tzunami, Earthqueq and the Radioactive fear... Is the water contaminated and spreading to China? Where we are eating frozen fish imported from there to Israel...
Much prefer the romantic old film with Gregory Peck and Eva Gardner.
@jen8933 - I haven't seen the original but I like this one, its very bleak but the message is direct and to the point. No one, but NO ONE wins Nuclear Wars. A Nuclear War happens and every living thing on the Planet loses.
AussieRoo1, you may as well take this movie down, as it's no fun to try to read lips to know what the characters are saying. I've seen this happen with other films posted here, but most of them have only one silent part. The Eagles got all bent out of shape when one of their songs, "Heartache Tonight" was used in the tv movie, "The Best Little Girl In the World" without their permission. Idiots. Never could stand that arrogant, egotistical Don Henley anyhow.
I disagree Wyllow.. both are excellent. The only things I don't like about this version are Rachel's facial tics, the lack of "Waltzing Matilda" and the ending different from the book. What I didn't like about the movie was Fred Astaire, and Moira considered as a complete slut. And the movie did perhaps convey more emotion..
@2242bzo Eh you don't mind not having computers then with their microchips. Why? Because Taiwan produces a hell of lot of them; anyway surrendering to a ruthless totalitarian state that China is, is beyond contempt. The Munich Crisis of 1938 comes to mind and we know where that ended up don't we.
Looks like China was pretty happy this week when Obama reiterated China's national sovereignty over Taiwan. May have just marched the nuclear doomsday clock back a few minutes. I'm not an Obama fan BTW. But if it helps push back the apocalypse, then whatever works.
Not that - it's a song played inside the movie that is the boner of contention. The only thing on Earth with less intelligence than a nuclear strategist is a music business drone.
If the morons at WMG had half a brain between them, they'd put a link to the song (or movie) that has their drawers in a wad for people who might want to buy it.
With their idiocy, they have guaranteed that I won't be purchasing music from them, that's for sure.
Hey hey, I'm not one for the crack-head squeaky whore image either. BUT theres nothing wrong with a freshly shaved beaver. Most guys will NOT go down on you if you have a big ol hairy muff. They'll probably still bang ya though.
You miss the point of Peck's characterization. He's a super-buttoned down type, the kind who always does his duty, even when it means pushing the big red button or leaving a second woman alone to die on another continent. Assante is not a good choice for this role, although he does his best.
fantastic soundtrack by Christopher Gordon!

WMG is bad enought but EMI? I´ve dealt with them and they´ve always been great about students using music, IF they ask first!
Dinosaurs, all of them. The internet will crush them.

Will they ever cast an age-appropriate Moira who is also blonde?

Christopher Gordon wrote the music for this film. I love the train music here. Romantic, lush, simple and true. Well, done, Chris.

If the radioactive cloud (which wouldn't reach Australia anyway - see above) turned back right now, this would be a perfect prequel to Mad Max!

@ludocrat but in mad max, you see in mad max 3 when they fly over sydney it has been destroyed
