I saw a video about 10 years ago live when I was watching a football game. the camera just happened to pan out into the parking lot and a car took a direct hit by lightening on camera. As soon as the lightening hit, the car essentially exploded and then caught fire.
This video does not mention one of the most dangerous effects of lightening upon the human body. Lightning electrons produce a powerful electric field around it that pulls and pushes charged particles, like the ones around and inside your brain neurons. Such a field can accelerate these particles and misfire all your brain neurons at the same time, causing death. A car frame distributes the electrons evenly around the driver, canceling out the electric field, making one thankful driver.
Interesting Lightning fact when lightning is seen it/they is/are going back up into the air but it happens so fast it appears going down. I heard this fact before.
Well because it is a standard German name, they dont think about it when they hear it... If Eric Banner became a terrorist, how many people wont call their child Eric anymore?
it starts because the cas wasnt turned on while it was hit .. if it was it would have some damage .. but the driver would be ok .. and if it was raining it would heat tires more and they might explode, but still driver would pretty much live .. but car would not be able to go anywhere
your wrong some cars may fail but most new ones will be ok maybe just cut out then restart. There is one on here a woman in america driving, in the wet and gets struck. No exploding tyres and lost power for a little bit too
WOW! So you are indeed same when a lightning strikes your car. That`s a releaf!!! I love Top Gear! Every show has something different and extrordinary!
If cars form Faraday cages then cell phones would not work within them. The car offers protection because electricity likes to flow from the metal roof through its metal parts rather than jump through the interior, but it is not a Faraday cage.
While I believe technically speaking that any car is a Faraday based cage of sorts, it is not complete, German or otherwise! You must first replace the glass with metal of some kind, then it could/would be complete minus the earth ground. However, atmospheric conditions may also provide the ground, thereby allowing the car to be struck in the first place. The car is still the safest place to be in an electrical storm. I am 'surprised' that it was still turn key drive car. Nice video!
YES its Top Gear and yes its the Hampster and yes faraday cages work and as long as your car is made of a conductive material and it surounds you ,,that is you dont have a convertable with a soft to it WILL work.. oh i have worked with lightning protection for 25 years ...on Ameture radio antennas as well as building protection.
It's not a strange thing and not from another world...isn't human technology... its physics...it's called Faraday's Cage, any car can do that, not just this one
a car always was and always will be the best place to be during a electrical storm. But remember to be INSIDE of the car, better with the doors closed!
consider that, if the electrode emitting the lighting is posed in front of a window of the car, the person inside must keep a secure distance of a half of the window length behind the window. To measure the distances between the normal sitting person and the windows woult proove that a car is secure, this video doesn't proove anything.

Lightning isn't around 600,000 volts though. It's more like 100 million. Who really knows what lightning will do to a car/human in that situation.

Many cars have been hit by lightning. There have been no reported deaths due to lightning when the humans are in the car.

There's no way that dialogue was filmed in the car at the same time as the current was running ;)

To panthersgold: Not even with a well shielded video recorder mounted inside the car? There's no need to transmit the video.
guayhansen 4 years ago
its not that....its the contrived nature of the reactions. I'll bet my hat it was filmed in two sessions, one with current, one without :)
