It is an unfortunate truth that these seals need to be harvested. If they are not, the cod may never come back. I would however qualify that by saying I believe there has to be a humane way of killing them. Although I do support the seal hunt, I do not support cruelty towards an animal.

I watched the vid (& others) and have a question...who made the video's? I feel there is a truth somewhere between the Fishery groups (6 Million seals) and environmentalists (<4Million seals). It is not illegal to kill pups since 1981. According to the biggest study ever done on the hunt, 97% of the 234,000 seals killed in the '07 slaughter were between 1 - 3.5 months old. "Neonatal" aka: babies. It has been illegal to kill Whitecoat seals since 1986. Pups under about 12 days old. Baby seals are still the target of the slaughter.

seals, like chicken or lamb have a nervous reaction when then are killed which makes then shake there fins. They appear to be alive but are fully brain dead. Seal hunting is an important industry to thousands of fisherman.
Newfies destroyed the 100s of millions of cod & ignored scientists, they would not hesitate to do that to the seals because they know their govt would bail them out with welfare. This is a bloodsport, an off season crime perpetrated by a few 1000 greedy thugs who want to make a quick buck and dont want to work their normal jobs in the commercial fisheries Newfoundland is doing fine without sealing but they try to get sympathy and convince people they are a third world village of starving eskimos
foreign bottom trawling was allowed inside Canada's 200 mile limit with huge trawls & not only taking huge amounts of cod they raked right over the northern cods spawning grounds over & over for years ! so its not just "the newfies" fishing these waters!

seals are not like chickens. when you cut a chickens head off it still walks for a few second. but once you cut off the spinal nerves in a seal they don't move. IF you hit a human in the head or the spin they will flinch and spasm too. These 'hunters' , some of them are up on investigation for their inhumane methods becasue they didn't follow protocal, the DFO is being investigated as well, one og the being for not providing enough patrols and supervisors for the men that were in the ice .

I have studied the data from DFO, From personal experiences of former seal hunters and from scientists that have filmed and witnessed the slaughter. It is an unfortunate truth that these seals need to be harvested. If they are not, the cod may never come back. I would however qualify that by saying I believe there has to be a humane way of killing them. Although I do support the seal hunt, I do not support cruelty towards an animal.

I watched the vid (& others) and have a question...who made the video's? I feel there is a truth somewhere between the Fishery groups (6 Million seals) and environmentalists (<4Million seals). My research says 88,000,000 lbs of Cod & 1.4 Million tons of Arctic Cod. The problem is isolating the facts from the agenda everyone involved has. Quite frankly I would support a sustainable harvest of 2-300K IF a humane way of killing were found.

I made the "False Comment" series. I believe the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans that the seal population stands somewhere close to 5.6 million. With global warming and TAC's as high as they were/are, it wouldn't be that way for long though. Especially not with DFO's "Greatest possible commercial use of seals" policy. Killing baby animals for their fur only is simply not humane no matter how it's done and the Canadian commercial harp seal hunt relies/relied on it.

I wish other countries would stay out of other country's business when it comes to what animals they like to eat. Each culture/country looks at animals differently. They may be pets in one country and food in another.

They're not trying to challenge themselves. If you're hungry and you can either go after the weak deer or the fit fast one, which one are you going to go after? When hunting for food, you go after the easiest animal, just like ALL predatory animals do.
Its also really easy to pick strawberries from my garden. Maybe I need to invent a new way to pick them that makes it unnecessarily harder for no good reason.

What actually happened was Newfoundland & Labrador Canadian Fishermen destroyed their OWN entire cod fishery. The whole Canadian Grand Banks. Greedy for money, they trawled. Env groups warned them! They didnt listen. Even AFTER foreign boats left! All the Newfld & Labrador Fishermen jumped in & fished it all out by the millions of tons! Its now totally ruined. The DFO has come out on their very own website and has dispelled "The seal are endangering Cod recovery" argument as MYTH. They are not overpopulated at all. In fact the harp seal population was at one time in the > 20 million region.

A few years ago on the local news there were cod forced onto beaches by the hundreds from feeding seals , the seals would catch the cod & only tear open the belly & eat the liver from the cod & on to the next one ! also every year you hear of or see seals miles upland feeding on freshwater fish ! which was never heard of before ! so its one thing to read about seal habits & think to be considerd educated on the matter then there is visual proof over & over on what those seals can really do.

It is not illegal to kill pups since 1981. According to the biggest study ever done on the hunt, 97% of the 234,000 seals killed in the '07 slaughter were between 1 - 3.5 months old. "Neonatal" aka: babies. It has been illegal to kill Whitecoat seals since 1986. Pups under about 12 days old. Baby seals are still the target of the slaughter.

(3) It is true seals have a strong swim reflex that continues in many after they are brain dead. BUT, hunters repeatedly use this as an excuse to not follow the 3 step process which is a hunt law to insure unconsciousness. A perfect example of a still living seal being dragged with the pick end of a hakapik can be seen at 2:22 in my video "Inuit Hunters Code." What "humanity" exists in the Canadian seal hunt only exists on the paper of lab studies.

Yes, the entire seal is useful, but in most part is not used. If it's meat and utility the industry are after then why aren't they hunting adult seals. It would seem much more efficient wouldn't it? In 1999 there was "virtually no market for seal meat" - DFO And, there still isn't. The only people to use the whole seal are the Inuit.

In 2005 80% of the revenue created by the hunt was fur related, and even THAT needs to be subsidized. YES, flipper pie is eaten regularly in NL., but the rest of the landed meat is canned and used as a substandard storm-supply. It sits on White people's pantry shelves for years right next to the SPAM. Most of the baby seal carcasses are left on the ice to rot, but the Inuit would tell you it is ALL edible. There is no humane way to kill a seal and the hunt is not sustainable. Where once there were 45 million seals (harps, hoods, grey, harbour and the now extirpated walrus) we have less than 3 million seals. Where once there was an abundance of cod living in harmony with tens of millions of seals, we now have less than 4% of the cod populations left after rapacious slaughter of both fish and seals by Canadian profiteers such as this guy Jim Dobbin - meganderthal seal pup skull smasher and the DFO.

foreign bottom trawling was allowed inside Canada's 200 mile limit with huge trawls & not only taking huge amounts of cod they raked right over the northern cods spawning grounds over & over for years ! so its not just "the newfies" fishing these waters!
