  • legato makes guitar like piano, not much picking and al hammers and pulls correct?

  • И что толку. Пусть для начала звук увеличит.

  • what's the difference between rosewood and maple necks???

  • @oT0MJHo Rosewood=dark Maple=light

  • @ocguitarokr yeah no shit lol, I meant tone wise ;)

  • Comment removed

  • this isn't very hard technique but it does take some time to master. But when you do mast er it u feel like you have achieved something extremely valuable :)

  • @encounter50 Agreed. I have been playing guitar for almost 10 years. And this is the first time I actually realized that I NEED to work on legato. I can sweep, I can shred, I can play with soul, but legato is more valuable than all of these

  • thanx for the lesson--my picking is fast, but cant get much faster without legato techniques, and now is time to dive in for me......

  • My god its Nintendo music

  • Great, thanks! So this is the key to being fast. I will start practicing pull off and hammer on, oh poor pinky of mine.

  • awesome lesson!

  • you make it look so easy :)

  • NICE !!

  • How do you get that tone?

When i use distortion it just makes an awfull sound on the higher strings, and i want to get some clean, soft sound

  • @Max18539 years of playing.. just that.

  • @kelperbelcher actually...its those seymour duncan pick ups he has.

  • @Max18539 well first, he's using a Fender Strat with Dimarzio fast track and or chopper pickups...there's more to it than just using distortion. Also, set your gain to about 7, up your mids and put treble to about 6...if you're using a Marshall amp for distortion than you're smart...

  • how do you keep the string from the note you just played from ringing :S

  • Would this work on an acoustic?

  • @KIsabelUnson you would have to have strong fingers and extremely good technique, but it can be done, and if you do this on acoustic, playing it on electric would be a breez

  • @PIMPZproduction not really, the other strings tend to interfere less on an acoustic guitar, the best way to learn it (in my opinion) is with some distortion (not enough to make the hammer ons piss easy but yeah a decent amount), i had this problem, i never muted strings cos it really wasn't necissary on an acoustic guitar, sure, my finger strength is great but yeah i 'sucked' at muting

  • what effects are you using? also amp type would be cool to know.

and @huanton2many he is using hot rail pickups

  • @Bryanbmx720 just delay and OD. maybe a slight compressor to even out the sound.

  • 6:50 made me go HOLY CRAP!

  • what pickups do u use here?

  • add some more delay delay delay delay.........

  • Imagin' this beeing a BASIC LESSON o.o

  • dude ?? what distorion or overdrive are u using ??????? LOVING THAT TONE!

  • Thanks for the lesson as you see by my vids I just picked up guitar fee months ago to teach my 5 year old, your very kind for watching my vid. Thanks for the sub and comment and again you rock.

  • I'm sure you get lots of questions on this, but what type of pickups do you have?

  • fav vid so far! subscribed!

  • Nice vid man! How can I use this when soloing in the key of G or Em? Thanks a lot!

  • great lesson!! very usefull exsercise!! thanks a lot. best and most useful lessons on youtube. ;9

  • legato don't use pull offs right...if you use pull offs it's still sound like stacato

  • what's with your pickups

  • Good job man!

  • Many thanks for your GREAT work in every lesson man... really helped me !

    Greetings from Italy

  • I've gotten hours of practice of this video and it alone has gotten me so much better. Thanks for the lesson!

  • Great lesson. Thank you, very much.

  • hey i have first time seen ur video and i love it dude !!! u r good teacher!!keep posting videos!!

  • I've seen those licks before, but Your video convinced and motivated me to practice them more... Great Thanks :D

NEVER PRACTICE WITHOUT METRONOME, or at least a perc. beat

  • awesome!!!!

  • Omg I really love that tone!

  • Super Work. You're awesome. Thanks for your videos man, you rock.

  • excelent lesson

  • One of the main tricks with legato is you need your guitar set up with a low action, good sustain and a bit of echo or delay is always good. A guitar with a higher action will not be very good for this technique!!

  • Great video bro!!

  • what is the effect you have on your guitar besides the delay

  • I find it hard to do pull-offs because when i pull my finger off, i will touch the higher strings causing other sounds...how to avoid that?

  • @sacredbooks Mute them with your finger, or your hand

  • @breedableGuitar Got it! played the video again and noticed you've mentioned it at 3:38 thxx^^

  • What's up with the delay? Fuck delay. Advanced up my asss

  • great lesson man love the style you learn, i can play this ad a jam and dude's are gane pop there eye's out :D

    amasing lesson thenks :)

hading on youre site now for more

    gr 501PS3

  • sound kinda satriani :P

  • Thanks for the Shredducation! ;)

  • My guitar wont sound like this, when I pulloff it never is as loud as the previous note.

  • @TimmehTRP he has a delay pedal you should try using one if you want that sound to be achieved

  • Playing a lot of Steve Vai?

  • Great lessons man! Thanks for sharing!

  • best legato lesson I've seen.I really appreciate the muting tips

  • Wow, for years I've been told not to anchor my righthand wrist anywhere and now tonight, I've seen two lessons telling me to use it to mute when I'm soloing

  • Great lesson.

  • Fantastic lesson. How do you get that tone btw, I'm dying to know

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for the Video

  • thanks dude!

  • Great

  • Really good. Thanks

  • These are some of the best lessons I've seen . Everything explained clear and concise followed by excellent examples. Thanks.

  • very strong left hand.... how do you make it sound so solid...?...cause whenever i do it it sounds lazy and almost dead... i cannot do legato without picking at least 1 note....per string...

  • REVERB!!!

  • dude! i thought all this stuff was a lot harder when i hear them play these solos on their albums, but you break them down and the techniques they use are a lot more simpler than complicated. thanks for your lessons. they certainly will make me a better guitarist in the next few months than ive been playing since the last 20 years.

  • does a guitar need to have a certain level of sustain to be able to do this well or do you just have to pull of really hard

  • You have just proven the fact that anyone can do any solo without strumming, good job bud! :D

  • very good lessons.. keep it up buddy

  • If guys like you are here then the world is good........thanks for the free lessons........It's because of you that i never attended a guitar class but play some guitar............

  • Those are the best lessons online... thank you so much.

by the way, if you upload some famous songs covers as perfect as you teach, your views will get really high.

  • Thanks man...just what I needed! Well done...easy to follow....plenty to practice.

  • I woud have to agree one of the best lessons sooooo cool thanks so much your great....

  • ZOMG I SAW YOUR website you have so many lessons.. COOL

    Nice lesson man

  • But using sustain is like cheating

  • thank you for your time and the lesson

  • thanks brother

  • what's the action on this guitar,?

  • fuccckiingggg aawwessoomeeee!!!

  • Nice Lesson ;D is this a wannabe?

  • sweet.. really SWEET notes.. "3"

  • I can do all this stuff but i want to know how to write guitar songs like satriani, gilbert, vai, petrucci, etc. but I cant write anything good. Have you got any tips on how to actually write a song?

  • @pivotgodxd born again mtf

  • @pivotgodxd Basically, what i've notice about them guys is they sit and really figure things out. They have riffs inside their head and they just sprawl in out. I remember seeing Vai talk about a song "building the church" ? He sat for hours just figuring it out. If you know your theory you'll be, just get a good riff in your head, get a looper and just play over the top of it, you'll soon be on your way :]

  • The lick you start playing at 5:19.... i'm not used to stretching my first 2 fingers like that... is it supposed to hurt if it's not a stretch you always do? In some ways it tenses up my wrist, hurting it some... but i can't quite execute the stretch without the tension... and then trying to pull and hammer makes it even tougher to do...

I know i can nail the licks and everything, though i think the best way to play is to play comfortably so if it's never comfortable to play for me, then yeah.

  • just awesome man help me a lot.keep it that way

  • Dudes !! You fucking ROCKS :D

    (Sorry if there's mistakes , i'm french^^)

  • what guitar are you playing ?? and your pick-ups ??

  • @89fides

It's a Eric Johnson custon strat with Seymour Duncans :)

  • One of the few lessons that are actually helpful. Well done.

  • One of the best youtube lessons ive seen

  • @Thennecan Thanks for the kind comment!!

  • @GuitarLessons365 very nice video. This technique goes easier if the guitar's sustain is good. Mine was sucky and it was twice harder hehe

  • Nice video - This is the first video I've seen of yours and I'm well impressed. Nicely explained and well paced so I found it easy to follow.

  • @pmjnugent Hey thanks a lot. Hopefully you will take a quick look at the rest. :)

  • 7:40 Richie Kotzen Rock Chops

  • Please never stop making videos. Please. They don't have millions of views because people don't take instruments seriously anymore. But people that watch and try to play what you teach really do.

  • @NickxdaxQuick Thanks a lot, hopefully the views will catch up one day. With the support of people like yourself I am sure they will. :)

  • Dude, no!!!! My F5 Trick doesn't work anymore!!!

  • very informative lesson. Thanks man. btw, i would like to ask what gears are you using in this video. definitely that strat rocked my world, I think its a dimarzio cruiser that you're using.

  • @diminished11 Hey thanks!! I am using an Eric Johnson Sig. strat with a Dimarzio Fast Track 2, Pro track and Chopper.. :)

  • what kind of neck are you playing on? it looks incredibly smooth.

  • @guitarexodus711 Hey thanks for watching. I am playing an Eric Johnson signature strat. It's super sweet!! :)

  • @guitarexodus711 it's a maple neck.. polished light wood not like rosewood were it's dark wood. common on most guitars like Gibson SG or Less Paul. some Fender Stratocasters have maple necks. Plus you don't have to treat maple necks as much you do with rosewood necks. i use lemon oil on my rosewood next twice a year.

  • hey bro, it`s great... how can i get a guitar effect like this???

  • @hugelion a delay pedal and a reverb pedal. jsut google around to find one im not sure of some good examples.

  • Hey thanks for the invite! Very useful stuff you've got here, for beginners and veterans alike. Check out my videos and let me know what you think...

  • my amp dont have a reverb. it sucks !

  • Hey, Great site and nice freebies. Hope to see more I am always looking to learn new things.

  • why can you playing it so clean? i play it on 3rd fret but my left hand fingers also hit the 2nd and 4th fret so it's sound horrible

  • @rerean Hey check out my new Randy Rhoads style legato video where I talk about how to keep those strings from ringing. :) Carl..

  • damn good lesson

  • great lessons!!!!

  • that was totally wicked!!!

  • @demonseye316 Thanks a lot for watching and commenting!! :)

  • what model guitar is that its damn sexy

  • @orimathath LOL, thanks!! It's a Eric Johnson signature strat. I have been playing it a little over 3 years. Its an absolutely fantastic guitar. :)

  • Awesome lesson !! Really inspired now to play Modal Legatos !

  • @sensational1982 Thanks man I really appreciate it. By the way, I have some modal improvisation videos coming in the next couple of weeks!! :)

  • That guitar sounds like an angel singing! Nice hotrods. =D

  • Hey I'm back I'm s a strat guy and I think your strat is freakin awesome for what I've heard but how does it sound with some good heavy rythm work. im a big fan of ritchie kotzen, george lynch, yngwie, and paul gilbert so I'm glad you have covered the yngwie and kotzen lessons they rip. Also in your opinion why did you choose dimarzio over they seymore duncan rail pickups.Well whenever you get a chance to respond ,thanks... Keep tearing it up

  • @Stratman291 Hey thanks for watching the lesson. I actually just put the original single coils back into my EJ so I don't actually have the Dimarzio humbuckers in it any more. They sounded great for heavy rhythm work. They don't sound quite like humbuckers but they are close to that level of bass response. I didn't really have any preference over Seymour Duncan, to tell you the truth I have never played the Seymour Duncan PU's before. I have just always used Dimarzio so I went with them. :)

  • @GuitarLessons365 ...Thanks for the quick response. Keep Rockin !!!

  • Its about time someone put some real guitar lessons that you can actually understand on youtube . please keep posting your video lessons -They are awesome.

  • richie kotzen example ...cool...

  • thanks for the message man this helped alot

  • thx for sharing this with me..subscribed :)

  • subscribed cheers mate

  • Beautiful guitar! Beautiful!

  • That the teacher uses type of colis?

  • Ah I forgot to say.... nice vid!! Mmm, mayb a bit less delay tho? It's a bit confusing sounding over the fast runs! :D

  • ChristophMikael, don't worry most people don't know what Lydian is :) Basically, each scale has a "character" based on intervals between the notes. So Lydian is a typical major scale but with a sharpened 4th note which can sound dreamy over a major or power chord (e.g. Steve Vai - start of 'The Riddle'). It comes from the IV pos. So E Lydian is the B major scale (E = IV/4th note of B scale) over an E chord. It's the same as E major scale but has an A# instead of a natural A (E F# G# A# B C# D#)

  • hey men!!

    i got your message thanks!!

  • I really feel you could have taught the same amount of information in much less time...I lost interest very quickly, despite it being a topic worth watching

  • This would be great if I knew what E Lydian, B Lydian and all that stuff was, exactly.

Being 100% self-taught, I never learned anything about scales, keys or any of that.

So it's almost like you're speaking a different language when you explain things. :(

  • @ChristophMikael If you know the major scale, lydian is the major scale starting from the 4th note.

  • Hey ChristophMikael, I have a lot of mode videos here in the channel. You can find them easier on my main site which you can find by the link in my channel sidebar. Go to the theory and advanced lessons archive to get tons of lessons on modes. All for free of course. :) Cheers!! Carl..

  • Really nice stuff... Congrats

  • thanks for the vid, and, i got a question, what kind of pickups do you have in your guitar?

  • Hey thanks for watching, I am using a Dimarzio Fast Track 2, Pro Track and Chopper. Cheers!! Carl.. :)

  • wow dude this is amazing you dont know how much this helps.

  • This is a great service you're doing to guitar players. Keep it up! :)

  • Thanks!! It is also great that you took the time to watch the lesson. I will certainly keep it going for a long time to come. Cheers!! Carl..

  • Great stuff, thanks for the lesson, maybe it will inspire me to practice, and get rid of the procrastinator in me.

  • I hope so to, we all have a little procrastinator in us, its just about getting on a roll with with. Good Luck!! Carl.. :)

  • that is definitely a workout thanx for finding me :)

  • Yeah, its the regular red Jazz III. Thanks!! Carl..

  • Great technique, great sound, great guitar player and really good lesson.

    Tnx for this lesson man

  • Thanks a bunch!! I really appreciate it.. Carl :)

  • Tnx for the lesson.

  • nice share!

i want to be a good player :)

  • Thanks for sending me a email about your lessons...much appreciated and I will sign on. Its always good to have good teachers around.

  • i just want to correct one small thing in the vid. Legato means 'smooth connecting notes' it doesnt mean dont pic. Its not a term invented for guitar. But not picking is usually how we get the sound. However, dont feel like you CANT pick. I usually pick once per string change to keep the power flowing in case i dont quite nail the landing and you'd be stuffed trying to hear the difference once you have your timing down. Keep practicing guys, and thanks for the vid.

  • Hey man, I never pretend to say that you can never pick when playing legato, it just so happened that these licks are played without any picking. I do know legato isn't a guitar only term, I don't think I said that in the video but I was just refering to the sound and yes the technique is usually played with slurs and not picking.

However, I know a majority of players pick the first note on a string 95% of the time and so do I, this is just for these exercises.

  • However, there is a difference in sound by starting with a pick and not, I think they are both sounds you should master and that is why I offered the licks this way.

Anyway, I appreciate your input, I agree with you in what you said. But I just think you thought I was slighting guitar players that add the pick to the legato like Steve Vai and such, but like I said in the video I was referring to Ritchie Kotzen's style on the string changing licks and that is how he plays them. :)

  • @GuitarLessons365 its ok dude i wasnt ragging on your lesson, i just didnt want people that are learning to take it too literally and get themselves trapped cos they misunderstood. I shouldnt have said 'correct' i should have said elaborate.
