  • I completely agree

  • I feel ya, I STILL LOVE NINE INCH NAILS!!! Great review bro.

  • Great review and I agree with you. i also give it a 3 out of 5 but I still love it. i did download itbut I also went out and bought it to get the dvd. Just finished watching the dvd again. Definetly worth having.

  • it was free...stfu

  • i kinda feel the same way you do. it does feel like the slip was unfinished. But we have to accept and appreciate that trent still makes music. Some bands are good when they start, then they start sounding really gay. But NIN still sounds cool. And trent only had 8 weeks to make the slip. thats why its so short..

  • hey dune. i want you to check out this guy that does covers of nine inch nails songs and i would like your professional opinion.

you can type in "Head Down Cover" it is the 5th video and he has with teeth era hair style.

  • I'm a huge fan of NIN as well, and i think the slip kicks ass, it's far from a dissapointment.... for me anyway.

  • shit! i'm sorry. i made a mistake. Ghosts was it's predecessor

  • that cornia radita track wasn't even music! however tracks like one million and discipline i felt we're both mussiclley and lyriclly fantastic. however it's definetley not a match to it's preecessor Year Zero

  • 10^6, Discipline, Echoplex, Head Down are really well done. The way 'The 4 Of Us are Dying' shifts into Demon Seed (An awesome track!) really convolutes the overall structure. It's methodically put together, pulling you from a daze/dream/apathy for your surroundings to a dancing, screaming, fun-loving optimist. And don't let 'free' fool you like a priest with tattoos, he did it for us, not because he was in a rush--> No NIN album is alike, so don't compare them. the Slip*****

  • I had the same impression too, at first. I think you need to listen to the album some more, because like most really good albums, they tend to grow. Listen to all ten tracks 'in order' with a good speaker system too, the overall simplicity becomes quite captious.

  • I agree 100 percent with you. He threw it together very quick and released it for free as a gift to the fans.

My full idea of it is he wrote 6 new songs to play live for his new tour and threw in 4 instrumentals to round out the album length. The instrumentals even borrow from Ghosts. Certain parts in the four of us are dying and corona are directly from some of the parts in ghosts. Like they threw 4 ghost songs together.

He said in an interview that Year Zero 2 is still in the making.

  • i think your right but it is still a awsome fucking album im a huge nin fan thanks for speaking your mind

  • the slip album serves me as a movie, in which i can tottally feel all of the emotional implements. thats why i listen to albums. over all. 100% rock the f on. picking one song on an album is like zealots who use only one verse of the bible. enjoy the completeness.

  • I think the music from The slip is better served in a live show. I think after doing the ghosts album. it did exhausted a lot of those layers you were talking about. I encourage you to see the lights in the sky tour. I did and I understood the slip a bit more. I look foward to Year zero pt 2.

  • Dude, that was an excellent, honest review. I pretty much agree with everything you said. I like this album but it really does feel unfocused. I think it could have been more but for what it is (being free and all) it's pretty damn good. Discipline is in my top 5 favorite NIN tracks and Echoplex is just amazing. Your review was really good, keep them coming!

  • If Trent Reznor charged us $5 for this album, I'm sure he would have put more time/effort into making it. I personally thought the album was pretty good. It sounded a bit like the Self Destruct era. I do agree with you about the songs sounding like they weren't finished. I'm pretty sure that Trent Reznor knows that he could have made at least $1,000,000 off of this album. That one million dollars would have obviously helped with the making of the album. So, there's my review.

  • 1,000000 is one of the best NIN songs i've ever heard live.

  • bwa hahahaha

  • yea in my opinion everything from PHM to WT was great. YZ was really good but not great I count Ghosts more as an experiment than an album. The Slip was trents worst but stiill pretty good

so to me NIN's best was from 1989-2005 they were really good in 2007 just good in 2008 hopefully next album brings back what made albums like PHM, TDS, TF, Broken, With Teeth great

I dont think he needs drugs to be great With Teeth was great and he was clean when he made it so yea

  • good review, I agree with everything you said. I love echoplex and dicipline I think those meet the standard at least, I would have paid for those graciously.

  • I bet if trent sold one of his turds on ebay you would buy it and worship it everyday licking your NIN tatoo.

  • what do you mean not enough layers. did you not enjoy Corona Radiata? and the most of the drums on The Slip were Live takes, not loops retard.

  • Are you high, cracka?

    There's almost no 'live' drums.

There's a bit on Head Down.

That's all i can think of.

    I like "The Slip" though.

  • My thoughts exactly!

  • i TOTALLY agree with this guy. i've been stressing to everyone about how much of a disappointment the slip is. it's like he says, it sounds like they're incomplete. and it was a major let down. i still FULLY support NIN, cuz trent will always be god. i just think he needs to step it up a notch. but hey it was free for a reason i guess.

  • i totally agree with this guy...

  • if you were a real fan, you'd NEVER rate less than the best...he puts his best out, and THAT IS PERFECT..and btw, the slip is a continuanc of year zero. so obviously there is prolly more.

  • Fuck off and go play with your ARG.

  • what is wrong with you?, why would you write that? am i not allowed to disagree?

  • yay, i have one on my neck.

  • i swear this guy should be called the angry album nerd

  • year zero is the only NIN album that isnt fantastic

  • dear where are the nin layers, i must say i think your expectations are in your ass, on the floor, in the garbage, on a shelf somewhere, etc. its "nice" of you to call the slip "good good" and to give it a 3.5, but try and get this...youre focusing, upset, and basing this review on "the missing nin layers". in my opinion you are being sooo trivial. why cant you just appreciate that the album rocks?!?!? Good luck in your career.

  • He does appreciate it, as he said. He was just saying that it didn't live up to the standards of NIN. And I agree. But I think it's because he planned on giving it out for free.

You seem like the type that would love anything that NIN released... even if it sounded like crap (not saying that any of it does).

So let people have their own opinions.

    Good review.

  • i do love everything nin has released and nin is my favorite band in the entire world!!!! i think the slip rocks!!!! i also think any opinion based solely on layering and looping is trival, thin, weak, and not cogent... espically when the music oozes awesomeness. let me have my own opinion.

  • This is a review! It is meant to point out what the reviewer sees as flaws or insufficiency. He is comparing NIN past music to the present music. And he is right, if you listen closely. The old NIN music had dramatic drums which included plenty of sounds and was different throughout the entire song. Whereas the new music is simply a repeating loop throughout the entire song.

The reviewer was pointing this out. So then, for you to go and say that his "expectations are in his ass," is ignorant.

  • You can have your own opinion by saying "I disagree, I think 'The Slip' is great." But to say that his expectations are up his ass after a long line of complicated, "layered," well-formed NIN songs just because he is a little disappointed is still ignorant.

  • I think NIN is awesome as well but I was still a little bit disappointed in about the latest album. And I had the same reason that he did. It just sounds like not as much time went into each song. Which I'm sure it didn't because, again, he planned on giving it out for free. Which is the most amazing thing I have seen a musician do.

  • youre saying the only reason the slip is free was because not as much work went into it...i find that ignorant. new nin album "LOOPS N LAYERS" lol!

  • Lol! No! I am saying that he planned on giving it out for free and therefor it was more of an experiment than a real, money-making album. Which he even said so himself! I still like the music! I'm just saying that it sounds like not as much work went into it compared to his previous albums (besides the ghost album).

Being a musician, I listen to all of the small details that went into it.

  • what? listen, trent did say "it" was an experiment-i'll agree there.however, i believe IT was in regards to the type of release. i dont recall reading anywhere trent saying,"the slip is a marketing experiment and not a money-maker"...prove he said that. i believe he was on the fence regarding giving the slip away for free for maybe a split second...as far as the music is concered we have differnt opinions...i think the slip is %$^&ing amazing and trent worked his ass off to give his fans an awe-

  • some album and u dont because it doesnt contain loops and layers...

  • um... no. I do still think that The Slip is a great sounding album. and I was disappointed that it had more loops and I can care less about layers. Where did I even say anything about layers? I have listened to all of his previous albums and all I was saying is that, from the sound of it, it seems like he did not spend as much time on The Slip. Normally, musicians will use loops if they are in a hurry to get something out that sounds ok. But if you want it to sound really good, you have to give-

  • each section of the song it's own, unique little details. The fact that he did use loops, which he rarely did in the past, and that he did not Master each song (if you don't know what CD Mastering is, look it up) leads me to believe that he did it quickly. I mean, he could not have spent that much time on it anyway because he just released the Ghost album not too long ago. a good CD takes a long time.

And don't get me wrong! I DO LIKE "THE SLIP!" Why does everyone keep assuming that I don't?

  • I do like NIN but I'm not obsessed with the guy 0_o. It appears that you are and therefore just LOVE anything and everything that he dishes out.

And again!!! I think it is truly amazing that he is giving an entire album out for free! I think NIN is awesome but I am not deafened by my love for NIN. I am still able to hear the music and see how much work went into it.

  • And damn it! This is a bloody waste of my time. Screw this.

  • well if its such a easy play along album go re-record all of the songs yourdamm self...see how long it takes...

  • well he did put the album out only a month after ghosts i-iv

  • I thought this album was great! I think it will grow on you, give it some time.

  • it does. i love it now

  • Anything can grow on you if you force it to.

  • Why would someone force an album to grow on them. At first it was different, now I just love it and listen to it all the time, just took a new perspective of listening. I didnt tell myself to like it, I just began listening to it alot and the lyrics, rythm took it from there.

  • Why? Because some people love NIN (or other bands) so much that they don't care if he produces something that doesn't sound that great (not that any of it does). They listen to it over and over until they like it... forcing themselves to like it.

But that's just some people. Others, even though they love NIN, can say that he didn't do that well on a song.

    That's all I meant.

  • Oh I see, True, True.

  • i think it's like, there are a TOn of people who would pay a LOT of money to hear unreleased NIN material or something trent made in the 5 years between TDS and Fragile, but trent doesn't think the songs are perfect or what have you but he also realizes the labels problem so he's like well people will want to hear this and i don't feel like people should pay for it since it's not really a major album so ill basicly bootleg my own unreleased material as an experiment

  • the songs do feel unfinished, the drum loops are repetitive. i got this feeling when Echoeplex and Discipline came out. when i first heard those songs i was like,

"i hope the hole album doesnt sound like this," but the fact is most of the album

does. i dont want to say it was a 'let-down', i mean it was free for god's sake.

  • If you tattoo a band's name on your body, you're a fucking moron. "Sorry".

  • yeah and tribal symbols, barbed wire, asian calligraphy, butterflies, and one's last name in old english characters seem to display personality better?

  • If you tattoo anything you're a fucking moron.

  • Good review. It definitely feels incomplete. It feels like a cool collection of songs rather than an actual album. I think NIN fans are used to "amazing" , that's why an album that's simply "good" or "solid" is disappointing.

That said, considering he put this album together in under 2 months rather than a year or so, it's pretty impressive but it still could've used a little tweaking.

3-3.5/5 is pretty fair I think and no there's no reason to feel like a spoiled bitch.

  • This cd is going back to with the teeth, dont get me wrong year zero is a master piece, but this has more guitar, bass, and drums in it. Either way Im going to disagree with you guy. This cd is amazing, and COMPLETELY FREE!....

  • don't feel bad - it's your personal opinion. if i were trent i'd rather hear your real opinion than have you just give me 5/5 no matter what.

personally i think the slip is a great album, but it pales in comparison to things like PHM, TDS, broken, and TF. so in comparison to that, it's extremely lacking. however, if i think about it on a larger scale i think it's pretty decent. but yeah, over all i'm a bit disappointed because i know trent is capable of more.

  • youre a retard......how long have you been a NIN fan??? ive been a worshipping NIN fan since 1989. and i was 24 at the time....tattoo shit, i named my son Reznor in 1998. i own every song on cd whether its a halo or it was for a soundtrack and yes i even own the coveted X-Files Broken VHS video and the Broken Cd with the 3 inch mini cd.

the slip 4/5 ...year zero remixed 1/5..its shit you have all your taste from merconium staining. go back to college and pursue another degree. try fag blowing

  • hahaha i utterly agree with ur comment, and wow u are definently a hardcore fan, BUT DOOD u year zero remixed a 1/5. I thought that was an amazing cd

  • dude... weak. nice name drops homo.

"youre a retard......how long have you been a NIN fan??? ive been a worshipping NIN fan since i sucked trent off in 1989. and i was 24 at the time....tattoo shit, i named my son a person's last name of whom i have never meet in 1998. i own every song on cd whether its a gay or it was for a soundtrack and yes i even own the coveted X-Files Broken VHS video and the Broken Cd with the 3 inch mini dildo."

    whoopity-goddamn-doo.

  • honestly

what kind of blunt asshole would worship a band? especially nine inch nails. trents just a regular guy (although an AMAZING songwriter) and he wants to be treated that way.

  • oh by the way 4 out of 5

  • dudes your all wrong 1000000 is the shit taking us back to his classic lyrics head down, and letting you are more of Year Zero(not a huge fan of) and the rest of the album is just the shit I do wish he would just give us more music from "his journal of pain through the years" rather than opinons on the goverment. THE FOUR OF US ARE DYING/DEMON SEED ALL THE WAY!!!

  • i really like "the slip" i would at least give it a 4 out of five

  • I agree with you that it does feel incomplete, but at the same time that's probably why there isn't a whole lot of info about the album. Being named 'the slip' makes it feel like he slipped us the unfinished copy of an album which still kicked ass.

I get the feeling 'Letting You' went after a style that was similar to alot of Atari Teenage Riot's albums (ATR was inspired by TR)

Lights in the Sky being a hurt replacement, Head Down & Corona Radiata stand out the most.

    I give it a 4/5 at least.

  • you rate music?? man..you didn't get it at all...

  • Oh and read my blog :-) (my "music" one.) I also wrote about this disappointment.

  • 3/5, that's right. It can sound a bit "formulaic" at times. The reason why it doesn't quite live up to his previous stuff is because it lacks originality. Take 1000000 for example--does it not remind you of The Hand That Feeds? Head Down and Lights in The Sky, and maybe Demon Seed are genuine gems.

"This album is incomplete": 1000000% agree with you.

  • i agree with you. The album was really good but didn't live up to NIN's other albums. But hey, for a free gift its phenominal. Hopefully reznors next non-free album will be another groundbreaker.

  • 3 out 5? I'm not an NIN worshipper or anything, but the album is much stronger than a 3 out 5.

Head Down, Discipline, and Lights in the Sky alone make it better than a 3 out of 5.

    Listen to it again.

  • You're blue eyes give me raging boners. Oops. Sorry. That was innapropriate. You give me an erection that only Britney Spears could rub out.

  • Blue eyes get you hard...?

  • Only his. I was just joking anyways. He's not that hot.

  • Oh ok :-)
