Very sad loss, had the very good fortune to meet John at a party in Hastings in 1971, and again at his concert in Southport in 2004. His musical influence will be totally underestimated, he has touched so many people.
You're a right gobshite. Always nice to have someone talking smack, or maybe it's the smack talking. I'm sure AMERICA is crying all the way to the bank. They gave John a chance to be heard by several million music lovers who might never have had the chance to hear one of his songs and you kick 'em in the nads. Disgusting.
The '70s were the greatest for John's music. Once he crossed paths with Phil Collins in the '80s, and started using drum machines and synthesizers on his albums it all started to go wrong for him. He was at the top of his game on this album.
@m06een00 I must say -havin' seen him live X2 in the 80's - i feel that his first 3 or so albums were way above /way higher than anything that ever came after!!!!!!!He was still great ,but :why change your voice -when you'vealready got all the 'grace' ya' need!!!?????Ok B.Dylan's voice changed ,but that's ,apparently :due to a motorcycle accident!!!!!!!!Let'sturn MORE of the World onto the Tumbler, and Bless the Weather!!!creashonrebel
Hey, this is Dan Peek of the band AMERICA. We had the pleasure of touring with John in the early 70's. The guy is/was the genuine article, true artist/poet/player.
AMERICA recorded John's song "Head and Heart" on our "Homecoming" album. This is one of those songs that still gives me goosebumps. R.I.P. John
@MrBananastand hi, just had to respond, bc i was in the car and john martyn's version of this song came on the radio. i knew every word, because of the america version...took me back, as i love america, and have rebought albums over time, still listen to you all the time. you did a great version of this song. thanks for that, and for reminding me to explore the beauty of john martyn's work, so beautiful, eh? and r.i.p. john, your work will live on in our heads and hearts...
@MrBananastand Dear Mr Peek .Thank you for your wonderful comments about John's song.I had no idea you were connected in such a way.Thank you for your wonderful music .I can truly say it has sustained me down the years. Now I am going to listen to your "Homecoming"album.
This has always been my absolute favorite song by John Martyn. I was living in the mountains in Arizona when I first heard it. First time I put it on the turntable, the moon was rising over the hill behind my cabin. It was synchro-magical. Every time i hear this instrumental, I see that moonrise, in my mind.
@CarolinaBeachcomber For me, the location was very different, but the vibe was the same. I bought the album as soon as it was released, and this track encapsulated a relationship I was just starting out on. The track has endured, and as for the relationship - well, she has just brought me a cup of tea so I guess it's still on.....
Fell totally in love with John Martyn in 1976 at the age of 13 when my Brother got me high for the first tme and put on solid air, I listen often now though no drugs involved nor needed, he takes me to the very core of my being and I cry often but good tears. Thanks for the good times John, now jamming with the greats in heaven I am sure.
If you like this guy, you'd better check out John Smith. John Martyn was wonderful to watch live.. 'One World' I wore out the album. 'couldn't love you more' then a 'certain surprise, treasure.
I have loved this track from the first listening. Forget pre-packaged pop. Real music touches the soul, just like this does, and all recorded in one take before the days of digital studio trickery! Thank you John Martyn, and thank you passer59! =0]

without hearing songs like this, i don't think i'd have bothered pursuing the guitar, or music in general. a genuinely life-changing bit of music for me.
Truly inspired stuff, gives me shivers. He tells the truth, the whole truth and NOTHING but the truth so him him GOD. I drift to this and yet remain in control, makes me want to feel the dizziness of falling in love again. Truly astounding, miss you big John. We we robbed of you too early. xx
Big John, what a fuck'n 'legend', in a world where that expression is banded around so ubiquitously and erroneously it makes me sick! This guy was the real deal. I was lucky enough to see John around a dozen times, each time totally different.
R.I.P big man, you will be dearly and sorely missed, but NEVER replaced!
@BigCrookster I saw a few times myself back in the 70s when I lived in England. He was extraordinary, sometimes very obnoxious onstage, but the combination of him and Danny Thomas on bass seemed from another realm.
Thanyou Youtube for giving us a glimpse into this beautiful mans songs and words,we should all hear music like this each day its music for the soul..May he continue shining in heaven
A most beautiful song that reaches right to your heart. Thank You John Martyn for allowing us such a lovely tune to share with someone we care about deeply. You will never be forgotten. Love and Peace!
If this song does not make you glow, smile + look in your beloveds eyes + see the love flowig out at you +you back at your beloveds, "YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT LOVE-THAT JUStT"IS" The current like a bolt of lightning, connecting with out any of the outward physical moves "we have tagged true Love" Find that someone that does connect with you in that way. Then you're connecting with your Spirit, Mind + Body + that will be a magnificent union. I stake my life on that. Then you Have the LOVE-That "IS"
: -))))) But don't you feel this song even more??? I learned what "It" (LOVE) was all about when those most challenging things came whiched pushed those bonds we had, to a point "WE" both experienced "IT" (LOVE) beyond anything we could have read in a book. Earth shattering awesome. Peace and "Love" come your way. ;-) :)))))
I have loved John for nearly 40 years. Saw him for the first time in a club in Liverpool 1972. His music blew me away then and still does. There's another shining star in the heavens, but his beautiful, timeless music will live on. Sadly missed RIP
just discovering you john even though you've been part of my parents massive music collection for decades your undoubtably my mom and dads favorite muscian, im looking forward to discovering all your great music its unfortunate i never knew how great your stuff was earlier in life, u'll be an inspiration to me for the future im sure of that, its a real shame i discoverd ur stuff after ur passing, cause ill never get to see you live. RIP JM
I'm kicking myself i didn't investigate his music before he died. I sort of knew who he was. 'Did folk music i think'. Well let me admit straight off that was a huge dis-service to his talent. Absolute quality. I Thought Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins fame was original because she used her voice as an instrument, sometimes forsaking the definition in the lyric. Not so! And such a talented guitarist too. Rest in peace my friend. Your music remains and speaks for itself. x
This album is still in my attic. I saw John in Coleraine in 1971 and his music electrified me with its percussive technique, easy flow and unique vocals. I must have listened to the album hundreds of times. The live performance was so much better than the album.

You burned deep inside my premium experiential psyche bliss mode, when I was all of nineteen years Now I'm fifty four, and your brilliance never fades.
You are truly a timeless and amazing prodigy in the world of music.
This has always been one of my favorite songs as covered by America on their first album. Now I get to hear the original artist. Thanks for posting this!
Sadly, I just found out about John's passing today. I fell in love with his music on "No Little Boy" then onto the rest of his gems thereon. Rest In Peace.
Oh John...cant ever forget you, wont ever forget you singing this in the early days in the church crypt down near Kingston, rocking back and forth and the shadows rockin on the stone walls. You were in mine and Junes heart then as now. The summer days with the speakers in the garden blasting you out.....all my familly love you ....wild man we love you ...phil
Cheers John!!!! Lucky for the living you are "timeless".....................Enjoyed you falling off your seat at gigs!! Always enjoyed your contribution to many people's lives!! Any chance I can have a cut of your PRS now you are dead?
I've been covering this song for about the last 35 years or so. The group America did a version of this that did this justice. I was amazed to see this posted but so lad I did.
Alone we stumble in this darkness, our own light barely enough to show us our own path, but there are rare moments when the clouds allow some light through. This song tears a gap in the bleak black sky, and lets us for a few moments to see everything brightly. Thank you.
Timeless. John ,you are forcing me to waste the day reliving my past via your beautiful music. Thank God for youtube and those who find these treasures... Take care and hope that all is well in your world. xx
I've seen Jon at the Savoy Hotel & with all due respect, whilst he did a pretty good set, I have to say that John Martyn's incredible guitar skills & uniquely distinctive vocal style is in a league of it's own & beyond comparison. Jon Nickoll is a moderately talented guy but benignly mediocre, lacking in originality & sounding distinctly 'average' - like dozens of others who grace the folk circuit, but minus the 'magical ingredient' which defines artists like Martyn, Drake, Cooder or Dylan. IMHO
I use DADGAD and it pretty self explanatory. But I believe he is really using BADGAD but he never uses the big E(or in this case B) string until the solo and its only once or twice so who cares right.
I heard this tune played by don ross, and I was like "this song is god awful, lyrics and everything!!!" it's funny to hear this version, it makes more sense here... kinda like eva cassidy's "fields of gold" as opposed to the original Sting
Very sad loss, had the very good fortune to meet John at a party in Hastings in 1971, and again at his concert in Southport in 2004. His musical influence will be totally underestimated, he has touched so many people.

Thank you.

IMHO

I'm impressed how much the group America stayed true to this original formula. Both versions are totally FANTASTIC!!
Thanks for posting this video :-)

I use DADGAD and it pretty self explanatory. But I believe he is really using BADGAD but he never uses the big E(or in this case B) string until the solo and its only once or twice so who cares right.

I heard this tune played by don ross, and I was like "this song is god awful, lyrics and everything!!!" it's funny to hear this version, it makes more sense here... kinda like eva cassidy's "fields of gold" as opposed to the original Sting

i think john martyn is so underrated, his music feels so deep and melodic. so much skill on the guitar.
