@:paulprocopolis: The Times is full of baloney on the self-indulgence remark. Ol' Diz Dean had a saying that answers that remark effectively. He used to say, "If you can do it, you ain't braggin'!" And V. Horowitz could do it throughout his illustrious career!!!
Simply the best, tempo flawless..crescendos and diminuendos interpreted with genius.sheer poetry when score indicates yet piano gymnastics note perfect.degrees of tenderness delicacy....artistry by musical genius......just like Rachmaninov........hrrsfrdd
What we are watching, is perhaps the greatest interpreter of Rachmaninoff and of the concerto in re minor and one of the best interpretations, if not the best, and all of that in the highest quality possible for this monumental video.
I love the performance, but why do people call Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto call it 'Rach 3'? I started learning, but I don't like to call it that. I don't think it makes sense.
@Valk72 OK. Makes a little bit more sense to me. My favorite recording of this piece is Andre Watts playing. I like his playing of the Second Piano Concerto the most also. I haven't been able to find any youtube videos of Andre Watts playing this piece, but I do have a nice CD of it. I also like Martha Argerich's playing of this piece.
@Rachmaninoff86 haha, I personally couldn't hear that, but what an asshole... especially to Horowitz that was infamous for wanting the audience dead-silent :)
I presume this is the performance given in the Avery Fisher Hall on 24/09/1978? Horowitz provides his usual magic in terms of articulation and range of tone colours and the interpretation is uniquely his, although I think the balance of the sound on the video has as much to do with the technicians as it does with Horowitz. 'The Times' review of this performance commended the excitement brought to the work by Mehta and Horowitz but censured the pianist's self-indulgence bordering on vulgarity!
Ya!
@paulprocopolis I learned and played this concerto in college and I know how monstrously challenging it can be, ESPECIALLY musically. NYtimes critics can say all they wanted about "vulgarity" of horowitz but let any of them or pianists NYtimes prefered for "purity" give a fraction of what horowitz gave in ELECTRICITY in rendition. i'll take him anytime. whatever critics thought of Horowitz and his "excesses" there's a saying that goes: "he has forgotten MORE than THEY could EVER know".
@paulprocopolis I am quite sure there is a horowitz version much much earlier - with "less vulgarity" just to show Horowitz could do "respectable" if he wanted. he earned the right to do what he pleased...that's all there is to it. I am quite sure there is a horowitz version much much earlier 1930 - with "less vulgarity" just to show Horowitz could do "respectable" if he wanted. he earned the right to do what he pleased...that's all there is to it.
@paulprocopolis I learned to never pay attention to any NY Times review :-)) They are invariably self-indulgent and self-important, written by self-designated experts with hugely inflated egos who do not merit even a glance. Horowitz did not need good reviews from anyone in any case :-))
@paulprocopolis Vulgarity and Horowitz, a noble character throughout his life, are mutually exclusive. Accusing him of vulgarity reflects very poorly on 'The Times'.
@simcha181818 Petty criticisms will of course do nothing whatever to tarnish Horowitz's unique pianism and artistry, but I suppose critics like to have their say (after all, it's what they are paid to do!).
@paulprocopolis There is a Horowitz Rach 3rd at Ann Arbor that was recorded from the audience - it is on YT. There is ZERO fall off in the "quality" and the immense musicality that Horowitz performed with - this is Volodya at his best at almost 80 :-) Nice that this was recorded very well by technicians, and best to dismiss anything from the Times, any critic who uses "vulgarity" in the same conversation with Horowitz is letting his envy show! Dam that critic! :-)
Ah, I love 42:16...Still mesmerizing...

@Rachmaninoffkid: Me too!
BTW, the four Rach concerti are amazing compositions. IMHO, tho, the Third is the most difficult, because of the demands of the dynamics, etc.
This video is most welcome, because we are able to see those amazing hands of the great
Horowitz.
One has to wonder how many days, hours, minutes, etc. the Great One had to put in practicing this concerto to be able to play it so perfectly

I LOVE it when he throws his closed fist in triumph near ~40:38~, having stormed the bastions and vanquished the rebellious concerto!

Perhaps because this way it sounds a litte like "Mach 3", and you certainly have to be quick with your hand to play this one...
