Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption. Even non-religious people know this.
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
The decline in many native bird populations is not just European in origin. The Maoris ate the kakapos and prized their fur. They also hunted the Haast Eagle and the Moa - two of the world's most iconic (extinct) birds - to extinction long before Europeans arrived. To say that they were eco-freindly is completely untrue. In fact the (European!) naturalists warned the settlers about what would happen if they introduced stoats, weasels, possums etc. But their warnings were ignored.
@PhysicalsimForever yea he says "pierced and violated by the addition of mammals and europe". not that it was solely europes or europeans fault. And by the time the european naturalists arrived, most maori had learnt a hard lesson and were operating quite sustainably. and you could probably count european conservationists before 1900 on one hand

Perhaps these bird names sound amusing in English, but we must remember that these names are in fact Maori, named in Te Reo, the native language of New Zealand, and I (as a New Zealand European, or, 'Pakeha', I might add) for one am proud that we make at least some attempts to preserve the culture of our native people. The same cannot be said for many other countries, Australia, for example.
Here in San Francisco we have flaming bumbenders; and even in the winter you'll find a cockatoo among the bushes in the park. No birds with funny names, though.
I love how broad Stephen's sense of humor is. He can laugh at the most intelligent jokes and at the most simplistic things like funny sounds. I think a lot of people - anyway, a lot of people I know - would be embarrassed to say that they find certain sounds hilarious, because to a lot of people that isn't "intelligent" or "mature". Stephen proves that wrong, showing us that humor is humor. He's great and I love him.

people who want to save creatures which are dying out on their own (ie NOT due to mans involvement) are idiots, obviously animals which are dying out without any help by man are just useless and its natural selection which keeps nature balanced so if they die they die, new creatures just evolve to replace them
@JoeJones3001 Golly you are so ignorant, the bird life in NZ is dying out due to mankind, in fact if you bother to educate yourself, the rate of extinction is growing faster every year due to the expansion of mankind and the way we are destroying the world around us.
Oh for heavens sake. As a 10 year old, yes, I would have laughed and as a 30 year old I laugh now. Though I get my humor and language from the Europeans, that doesn't change the fact that conserving creatures, because they have silly names to some or because they are critical parts of our environment, is brutally important. If it takes an insult to some to preserve, them I'm all about it. Insult my native creatures if it means someone pays attention.

In NZ we all probably make fun of the Maori language in this way once or twice when we're ten and then realise its bloody offensive. I wish Fry realised how offensive he was being. and its important to remember it sounds nothing like that when pronounced properly anyway- it was europeans who invented the silly looking spelling
I wish you realised how offensive and ridiculous you are being with your turgid political correct flag flying high. This is a little bit of fun with word play, not an attack on the indigenous population you ignoramus.
Is there anyway he can keep himself off our screens? even down under is under siege from him. The mafioso squad of hitman desperado british Comics, of which he is pre eminent amongst them will show us no quarter. We are held hostage, there is no escape from them. Bring back Benny Hill and sober presentation.
Presumably those bird names are either Maori or derived from Maori. So Stephen Fry is taking the piss out of the Maori language. Not very politically correct Mr Fry. And not very sensible either - the Maoris have a very robust pride in their culture.
I'm glad he thinks kakapoopoo is funny. I'm not alone in my immaturity :D

@JemimaTheDuck agree, all very good, just one small point, te reo means the language, te reo maori is the maori language
