You mentioned phbb at the end of you video, you talk about a useless board. I tried phbb3 OMG! It took me like 45 minutes just to set up the front end of my forum. Spammers can still get in. PHBB3 is just too much work I can't believe how simple Fireboard is. AWESOME!
sweet, I just installed component_Fireboard_Forum_1.0.3, was successful and now trying to tweak things a little bit around. looks awesome users can now login to one place only.
nice video. i been using drupal all most 2 weeks now and there are so many problems and bugs. every time u have to download modules. "ops" there is another problem i need to run and find some other modules to fix this crap ......... oooooH crap not this again :@ :@:@:@.....
unfortunately, you will prob have the same prob with joomla. This is almost unavoidable with the base code always being updated, making probs for the plugins, plus the issue of javascript library (mootols, jquery, etc) clashes with one another and even with themselves, and compatability between all the different plugins. There is no easy fix, as you will soon see. Bottom line is use plugins sparingly and spread them out (not too many per page).
forumotion is a forum hosting site, presumably phpbb.
Can fireboard/kunena do as much as phpbb? no, BUT it integrates with a Joomla site. If you want a forum, pure and simple, use phpbb whether you use forumotion or not (i would rather pay for my own hosting and set up phpbb myself). If want a site that is BOTH a "web site" and forum, go with Joomla/Kunena, but you wont have as much control over the forum aspect.
Alex... you are amazing and you have practically turned me into an intermediate now. I knew sod all before last weekend. Thank you very much, ill give you free guitar lessons when I have my website finished.
yes, there was a big hoopla about fireboard disappearing earlier this year, and then kunena came out shortly after and it turned out it was basically the same people and it works exactly the same as fireboard, although it has been updated with subsequent versions of course, so it is "better"
Hi alex just here to thank you for your eye opening videos. Was also wondering if you could help me with why I get a "/" after the use of Apostrophes?
First and last, i would like to Say Thank you very very much for your lessons. i was simply very lost and once i found your lessons, the whole matter turns out to be very easy. once again. thank you so much.
thankyou for taking the time to reply . ive got my fireboard a bit more tidy . i just need to work on resizing it ang getting my emoticons working . thankyou for all you help and the useful links . much appreciated
my fireboard forum is tiny compared to yours . why is that ??
also i set up a user acc , logged into my joomla site (front end ) , clicked on the fireboard forums link i created , then it threw me up a lot of stuff that looks like an error page , . it has been there since i installed community builder which is supposed to be intergrateable with joomla and fireboard . what am i doing wrong ? ahhhhh
i just wanna rip fireboard out and i dont know how .
my fireboard is probably bigger because i have set all side positions to NOT show when fireboard is active.
i can;t really help w the link problem because it could be a number of things. Always try disabling SEF (whether joomla native or a plugin such as sh404sef) to test.
Make sure CB has the fireboard plugin published.
Make sure to create a menu item to fireboard.
"threw me up a lot of stuff that looks like an error page"
vBulletin is commercial, and you might easily find your host, or the distributor, demanding that you pay up or take your site down. It's been happening quite a bit lately. Fireboard is NOT as fully featured as phpbb or vBulletin, but, depending on your needs, it is more than adequate. If you WANT to be a forum mod, ditch fireboard and go with phpbb.
make sure you have made a menu item that links to fireboard (now call Kunena). Next, go into each module that is showing up in a side position when the forum is active and change the menu assignment for it from "All" to "Select Menu Item(s) from the List" and DE-select fireboard/Kunena.
Hey, I just realized that, for this to work, the user has to be able to get back to your home page. If you have your menu in a side position, as I do, rather than in the top position, you will have to make it so they still have a "home" link to click. I used the breadcrumb module for this, but I had to modify it so that the "home" entry became a click-able link. If you can;t figure out how to do this, just tell what joomla version you are using and I will tell you how to do it.
Thats fantastic thank you. As it happens I do have my Home link at the top. I am now about to attempt the assignment the side modules to selected pages only. I have also looked at the Kunena forum and it looks pretty cool, the only concern I have is that if I upload it and delete the Fireboard I have set up, will I lose all my forums I have spent all day today setting up?
Thanks again for your help, you are very helpful.
"if I upload it and delete the Fireboard I have set up, will I lose all my forums"
I don't know the answer to this. I still have fireboard and I simply do not yet know how different Kunena is. I don't think the word is out yet, especially since the move from Fireboard to Kunena came as such as surprise to everyone. I suspect that it will keep all the info, but even if not, I think it best to move now rather than later. How did you get your hands on Fireboard? I thought it was gone.
i got fireboard set up correctly now after paying close attention to your video . thankyou . great tutorials . is it possible to install more than 1 forum pllugin on joomla ??
I will annotate all my vids in the next couple days to display this info. On the other hand I do not want people thinking that file permissions will prevent them from being hacked, as most Joomla hacks are SQL injection hacks through installed thrid party plug-ins.
agreed, I neglected to point this out. GENERALLY, you should take file permissions down to 644 and folders down to 755, but even this is very debatable. Some folders, such as image upload folders, will surely have to have less strict permissions. configuration.php can run with even more restrictive permissions, but will have to be chmodded again to allow for any changes.
Thanks Alex, great video- one question, can you change the folder's permissions back w/ no errors? 777 is a very insecure setting and vulnerable to being hacked as happened a couple years ago.
Dude, your awesome... great videos man. Just a great, great job. Best instructional videos I've ever seen on the net... seriously. Subscribed, favorited... bookmarked. :)
Thanks for this very good and convincing tutorial.
Definetly helped me decided for fireboard.
And since you seem to know your shit, do you maybe know if there is a possibility to link from joomla menu items directly to certain categories in the forum without having to open the whole overview???
get the url of the forum thread you want by navigating to it and getting the url from the address bar, then make a new menu of type "external link" and drop in the url.
perhaps you think you are clever by using a nulled version of vbulletin, but it is just a matter of time before your host shuts you down for using warez. Having said that, this tutorial is about fireboard, which integrates with Joomla, including all user accounts. Does vBulletin do that? apples and oranges.
ok i have sorted out those problems just the community builder problem now for some reason when i try to save a members profile settings i get the 404 error i dont understand please help alex. oh by the way i have 3 of your video's on my website :) its my way of returning a favour.
I need to know if you are using Joomla 1.1 or 1.2. Also, did you have community builder up long enough before you installed fireboard to be sure that you didn't have this problem before you installed fireboard?
hey! mate cool video's you are the best 10 stars! but they only have 5 lol, anyways i need your help i have installed fireboard, easy job, but when i rename the "_fbfiles_dist" to "fbfiles" using the same ftp core software it keeps changes it to "_fbfiles". also i keep getting php errors when trying to upload an avatar and a php error on the avatar gallery please please help me out here bcus its really getting me peed off thanks :)
You won't be able to upload avatars until you fix the fbfiles folder because that folder is where Fireboard is trying to upload your avatar images. I have no idea why fbfiles keeps getting renamed. Try chhanging the folder name on your local computer and then uploading the renamed folder.
oh i have masterd it lol, i found a patch that i didnt know i had i just took the fbfiles folder from that bcus it was already named "fbfiles", and one more thing do you have the community builder? bcus i keep getting a php error on the user manager i just wanted to know if you knew how to fix this bcus i think its a great mod and the comfirmation message doesnt go into your hotmail junk. please help and thankyou for the reply :)
Almost everything is joomla and joomla plugins (sometimes I use standalone php web apps as well).
The 3 most popular CMS are joomla, wordpress and drupal.
I tried Wordpress and Drupal, but Joomla was the most fun. Wordpress is easy to get going, but no matter what I did it looked like a blog. I used to run phpbb as well but dropped it and now i'm starting over with Fireboard integrated into Joomla.
The reason to go with one of these CMS is the number of quality plugins.
And my site is ugly in a sense because I use the default site template rather use one of the many REALLY nice looking ones. I use the default template because I am promoting Joomla and so want people to recognize it.
for example, check out my buddy's Joomla site i've been helping get set up animestreamonline . com. Uses some of the same plugins as me, but made to be more eye pleasing as well.
And how did you make the design for your buddy's site? (it has a custom banner in the background) Also, does Joomla come packed with design stuff....BTW you should change the favicon!
he made the banner. That kind of thing is easy to do with CSS (background banner) but this is just yootheme surface template. The planet even came with the template (not the animated characters though).
Not "design stuff" but lots of plugins. Mostly you get the plugins at the joomla site or around the net. The plugins themselves (which one you pick) give your site a "design".
Yeah i forgot about the favicon: i was making one for someone and forgot to put mine back, so thx.
Thanks Alex, very helpful. I have Joomla 1.5 with Community Builder and now Fireboard, but when I'm in the Forum, if I click on a post, it displays the forum with no style and no Joomla template. Once I click on something else it goes back into the template. Have you ever seen this before?
Im sorry, I haven't, at least not with fireboard. I'm trying to think what might have gone wrong but I really just don't know. When troubleshooting always try with different, preferably simple templates and disable sh404 is you have it installed. Also, fireboard is a non-destructive plugin, so nothing stops you from uninstalling and trying again.
I am having this exact problem as trubalu. I have only just installed Fireboard with Joomla 1.5 (i don't have Community Builder yet). Did you find a fix for this problem?
When I'm in the Forum, if I click on a post, it displays the forum with no style and no Joomla template. Once I click on something else it goes back into the template. That is the problem I am having.
No problem. If you just finished installing FireBoard, I would look into doing Community Builder next (actually the sh404SEO extension SHOULD be your first priority, Community Builder next), as it really ties Joomla and FireBoard together nicely. It's easy to install, but not so easy to configure. Im going to do a tut on it asap, but if you get started now and run into problems and need help just message me.
Hi Alex great video, cleared alot up, saved a few little hairs on my head. Wouldn't mind seeing a sh404SEO video from you. Community builder works very nicely with tieing up Joomla and fireboard together. So too see a new video soon. Cheers
I don't want all my menus to show up when viewing the forum. Is there a way I can do that? It would be nice if the Menu Assignment section had check boxes rather than having to highlight what I want. Is there another way I could do it, or will I have to disable my forum first? Thanks!
One you figure out FireBoard, I suggest that you install Community Builder, which REALLY ties together Joomla and FireBoard nicely. COmmunity Builder is a Joomla . org "editor's pick".
Thanks, I'll look into that. I'm currently having some serious issues with sections and categories, so thats #1 on my to do list. From what I understand, knowing how to use them is absolutely essential. I'm having trouble understanding how to get a section running on a page other than the front page. The tutorials I've found don't give much detail on how it works.
I'm having a real bad problem installing the new FireBoard_1.0.4_Stable CompletePackage. I try to upload the zip file and receive a error stating that it failed to retrieve the file. I'm using the 000 web hosting and joomla 1.5, please help!
That will NEVER happen, I am positive. It would require a HUGE amount of time reworking the vBulletin code, whereas FireBoard was in its infancy when it began the port over to Joomla. Would be nice though, agreed.
How do I move my PHPbb forum into fireboard? I can't afford to lose all my users and information!

As long as you have FB 1.0.5rc installed, just install kunena. For FB 1.0.4 and earlier you need to use fb_converter.
1. Backup (file and database).
2. To keep forum config when uppgrading from FB 1.0.4 and older version install
fb_converter. Otherwise you have to configure your forum over again.
3. take your FB forum offline, and put a message that link to forum have changed.
4. Disable fb_latest equivalent module
5. Remove all menu link to FB
6. Install kunena
alexwestconsulting 2 years ago
7. Add menu link to kunena
8. If running J1.5.X install kunena_latest module if wanted.
9. uninstall com_fireboard, mod_fb_latest, com_fb_converter

And my site is ugly in a sense because I use the default site template rather use one of the many REALLY nice looking ones. I use the default template because I am promoting Joomla and so want people to recognize it.
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
for example, check out my buddy's Joomla site i've been helping get set up animestreamonline . com. Uses some of the same plugins as me, but made to be more eye pleasing as well.
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
And how did you make the design for your buddy's site? (it has a custom banner in the background) Also, does Joomla come packed with design stuff....BTW you should change the favicon!
CompHelperKid 3 years ago
he made the banner.
Yeah i forgot about the favicon: i was making one for someone and forgot to put mine back, so thx.

kk BTW I have Photoshop, Fireworks and stuff (CS3) hence I can make you some AWESOME graphics! (I'm only offering coz I LOVE your tuts) lol

Thanks Alex, very helpful. I have Joomla 1.5 with Community Builder and now Fireboard, but when I'm in the Forum, if I click on a post, it displays the forum with no style and no Joomla template. Once I click on something else it goes back into the template. Have you ever seen this before?
trubalu 3 years ago
Im sorry, I haven't, at least not with fireboard. I'm trying to think what might have gone wrong but I really just don't know. When troubleshooting always try with different, preferably simple templates and disable sh404 is you have it installed. Also, fireboard is a non-destructive plugin, so nothing stops you from uninstalling and trying again.

I am having this exact problem as trubalu. I have only just installed Fireboard with Joomla 1.5 (i don't have Community Builder yet). Did you find a fix for this problem?

Your videos have helped me set up my website. Thanks a lot!

No problem. If you just finished installing FireBoard, I would look into doing Community Builder next (actually the sh404SEO extension SHOULD be your first priority, Community Builder next), as it really ties Joomla and FireBoard together nicely. It's easy to install, but not so easy to configure. Im going to do a tut on it asap, but if you get started now and run into problems and need help just message me.
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
Hi Alex great video, cleared alot up, saved a few little hairs on my head. Wouldn't mind seeing a sh404SEO video from you. Community builder works very nicely with tieing up Joomla and fireboard together. So too see a new video soon. Cheers

I don't want all my menus to show up when viewing the forum. Is there a way I can do that? It would be nice if the Menu Assignment section had check boxes rather than having to highlight what I want. Is there another way I could do it, or will I have to disable my forum first? Thanks!
BeeRad277 3 years ago
Never mind, I disabled it, and highlighted everything else. I just don't think it should be necessary, but thanks anyway. I appreciate the tutorials.
BeeRad277 3 years ago
ahhhhh, took me a min to understand what you were getting at.
The Menu Assignment has Shift/Control multiple selection capabilities, so it IS effectively a check box system. Try it out.
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
One you figure out FireBoard, I suggest that you install Community Builder, which REALLY ties together Joomla and FireBoard nicely. COmmunity Builder is a Joomla . org "editor's pick".
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
Thanks, I'll look into that. I'm currently having some serious issues with sections and categories, so thats #1 on my to do list. From what I understand, knowing how to use them is absolutely essential. I'm having trouble understanding how to get a section running on a page other than the front page. The tutorials I've found don't give much detail on how it works.
BeeRad277 3 years ago
And I figured that out too, lol.
BeeRad277 3 years ago
Yes, i have installed several templates successfully but not through the template manager but through FTP
manwithcord 3 years ago
please first confirm that you can install either a template or extension through the joomla extension manager

"Warning! - Failed to move file"
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
You get that message when the F TP file system layer is not properly configured or not enabled.
In joomla:
Site - Global Configuration - Server - F TP Settings
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
Make sure this is configured with the same info as cited in your 0 0 0 web host control panel f t p account settings.
Then you have to make sure it is enabled.
If it manages to switch to being enabled when you apply it, only then do you know that it is working.

sorry that took so long. Youtube is getting ridiculous with the posts that it blocks.

I'm having a real bad problem installing the new FireBoard_1.0.4_Stable CompletePackage. I try to upload the zip file and receive a error stating that it failed to retrieve the file. I'm using the 000 web hosting and joomla 1.5, please help!
manwithcord 3 years ago
Is Joomla up and running such that you have already managed to install a template and or other extensions?

Thx man!

The next thing im waiting from you is how to intrigate Joomla with Vbulletin or IPBoard
Ormatinick 3 years ago
That will NEVER happen, I am positive. It would require a HUGE amount of time reworking the vBulletin code, whereas FireBoard was in its infancy when it began the port over to Joomla. Would be nice though, agreed.
